Sixteen thumbs up from a mutated alien hand. I love "Lio."

Cute, funny, and slightly disturbing all at the same time. Bravo.

Really quite touching. Calvin would have appreciated it.

Based on past strips, Lio's artist is a true fan of comics, and especially Calvin and Hobbes.

He once had a strip where Lio led a parade of all the old, lame comic characters that continue on today -- Beetle Bailey, Blondie -- while passing a cemetery marking the graves of some great ones that are gone -- Far Side, C&H, etc.

Though today's Lio made me a little sad, thinking that Calvin died, I really like the strip. I bet he's going to ruffle a few feathers today.

Good steal. Nyahh!

Lio is consistently one of my favorite strips, although nothing is able to replace Calvin and Hobbes.

I miss C&H...sigh...

And F every moron with a pissing calvin rip off on his truck. You need your window smashed in. To this day I don't understand why Watterson didn't sue that stuff back under the rock it came out from under.

overcaffeinate much?

Barnacles! [TotalFark] 2008-01-20 10:24:25 AM
too funny. sick & twisted. Like I like.

Generation_D [TotalFark] 2008-01-20 10:27:01 AM
Oh my goodness.

I checked out Lio.

Its the best thing I've seen since Calvin and Hobbes. No kidding.
I don't really get 99% of web comics, but this ones great.

Whimsical, literate and slightly twisted. Perfect.

Re overcaffeinated, perhaps, someone's gotta.

Calvin & Hobbes and Far Side.

Best. Comics. Evar.

I was sad to see the strip go, but I really appreciate strips (and the occasional TV show) that knows to stop before it takes on the suck. (Not: Andy Capp, Wizard of ID, M*A*S*H*, X-Files, Happy Days, etc.)

mandyer 2008-01-20 10:31:17 AM
I hate the shiat out of Lio but that was pretty cool.

Today's PvP (pops) strip was also about Calvin and Hobbes... coincidence?

That's farking beautiful.

DJMikeWazowski 2008-01-20 10:35:38 AM
And that's why Lio is one of the few comics in the paper worth reading.

eww.

C&H made my brain start wanting to read as a kid. I just bought the first two books for my niece and nephew, and the three volume set for myself.

+1

My local paper (The Quad City Times qctimes.com ) recently dumped Lio because they "determined from reader and staff reactions that it not
well-received and had low readership". Par for the course for this town I guess.

/Long live Lio

why is a dead Calvin a kind nod to the sorely missed (and best ever) comic strip? he's farking dead, but awwwwwwwwwwwwww, he was referenced! my reaction to this strip was entirely negative, it even gave me a little start to see Calvin "honored" by showing him dead. i came in here expecting the comic to be flamed for what it is, an insult to the character of Calvin, who is supposed to live on "exploring" forever. sort of a happily-ever-after thing, right?
i'm not trying to start a flame-war or insult anybody, i'm just completely and totally baffled that nobody else is pissed.

I can see why you're pissed, but "irreverence is sometimes the new reverence". Not everyone has a problem with pulling the tail on a sacred cow, while not denying that it's sacred.

Sadly, I don't think there's an "it" to sue - I sometimes think every redneck half-wit with a vinyl die-cutting machine is manufacturing those things.

Tizzle McMizzle 2008-01-20 10:51:09 AM
I'm put off by the cartoon myself. Watterson's last cartoon was heartwarming. This one implies that Calvin hit a rock shortly after we last saw him and he died. WTF?

i always laugh when i see the rip-off ones showing Calvin kneeling in prayer before a cross, especially considering that Calvin was probably an athiest and at least barely agnostic, and never had anything to say about the reality of God except for doubt.

halfof33 2008-01-20 10:51:32 AM
I always thought Lio was "MEH."

But has anyone ever seen a more preachy comic strip than Frazz?

God, I hate that farking hippie.

NeoLuddite1 2008-01-20 10:52:18 AM
Hard to believe that the guy who draws the twisted "Lio" strip also draws the insipid "Heart in the City." Is he bipolar or something?

Control_this [TotalFark] 2008-01-20 10:53:00 AM
I'm thinking of paying an homage to Hugh Hefner.

Which would make me quite the cocksman, by association.

Sim Tree [TotalFark] 2008-01-20 10:53:39 AM
izen, I'm with you, too. It seems to be more of an insult to Calvin than an homage.

Does Lio even read the strip C&H? Exploring was a beutiful thing for an intelligent, curious child. Don't fark with that.

Stonegeek 2008-01-20 10:54:00 AM
Looking back through past strips I see that within the last month he's had Snoopy taken away in a straitjacket for being on top of the dog house in his WWI flying gear.
He seems to make a habit of getting cheap chuckles off the work of others instead of developing his own talent.
He had a couple of chuckles there but he looks to me like he's basically ripping off Calvin most of the time.

I think it's in bad taste too. But I can reconcile it by thinking that Calvin died doing what he loved with his best friend instead of growing into a sad old man.

A more fitting "tribute" to C&H would be for the sledder to find Calvin and Hobbes sledding in the woods. Alive and well.

Fluid 2008-01-20 10:58:34 AM
I like C&H, and I like this comic. So the joke was rather morbid, but no less humorous for it in my eyes.
