Here's the trajectory of Vince Clarke's career: he founds Depeche Mode, says, "Nope, that's not gay enough", and then he starts Yaz. He's with that band a while, says "Nope, still not quite gay enough," and starts Erasure. Then he says "OK, this is pretty much gay enough for me."

/not that there's anything wrong with it

Ha, Jake_Lex nailed it.

Vincent Clarke is straight, but kept on making gay music. Go figure. Theres also the stories (no links sorry) that he made Alison Moyet kind of a nervous wreck, to the point she could not go on stage.

Enter Andy Bell.

Allison Moyet is huge, but man does that woman have a set of pipes..

Two weeks in June, in England? They must be going for that brief window when the winter fog rolls out and the summer rain begins.

Why do people bother commenting in a thread just to say "I have no idea who this is"?

Trying to impress us with your lack of knowledge? Trying to boost your post count? Just really like to type things?

Well, to be fair, most of us yanks just don't know that band name - the artist we know, but from his DM iteration.

It was quite a shock to me to hear Clarke-era Depeche Mode for the first time. I'd gotten used to them from songs like "Blasphemous Rumours" or "Never Let Me Down Again", which are these dark, brooding songs with a sort of kinky sexuality to them (often hints of BDSM.)

Then I hear "I Just Can't Get Enough", and it's a peppy, kind of silly song. I couldn't believe it was the same band at first.

I went through an Upstairs at Eric's phase. Then I got over it. Pretty good album, though.

two weeks in June, and only in England

They could do one of those NY-Chicago-SF-L.A. swings and call it an American tour, as so many do.

Damn -- I though it was the Yazoo label releasing some blues or something -- never heard of the band

in America they were known as Yaz for those going "Who?". And if you were aroud in the 80s, you heard Situation and Don't Go, lots of times.

fark Yazoo. The single best thing ever to happen to any musical group happaned to Depeche Mode when that tin-eared mook left. He's got all the musical talent of anal cancer.

Upstairs at Eric's was the first vinyl LP I ever purchased - for the primary reason that my name is Eric.

Alison's "Invisible" clearly one of the best songs evar sung.
She kicked it's ass.

We used to use pieces from "Upstairs at Erics" for radio backgroung
music.
