Strangely, the newswire stories I've seen aren't mentioning it, but he had a big solo hit in the late 70's with the song "Gold" (YouTube vid, pops), with some backup vocal help from Stevie Nicks. I suspect most would know him more for this.

RIP and all.

I'm just glad he was able to spend his last days
doing what he loved best.

John Stewart. I never did get his humor.

So it turns out that skimming headlines first thing in the morning and coming up with "Jon Stewart dies" can do the work of quite a large cup of coffee. Thanks, Subby. Just as soon as I get some fresh trousers, I'll be ready to face the day in record time.

Thanks for pointing that out. I thought the same thing when I saw the name and starting skimming stories, with no mention of that fact in them. I had to dig around to make sure it was in fact the same one I was thinking of. I liked "Gold".

RIP.

The entire album is excellent - Lindsey Buckingham also is on there in places.

"Where's that money, you silly stupid old fool? Where's that money? Do you realize what this means? It means bankruptcy and scandal and prison. That's what it means. One of us is going to jail - well, it's not gonna be me."

Some of his best work.

RIP

Hey, no kidding? I never knew that guy wrote "Daydream Believer". Can't believe they didn't mention "Gold" in the obit. Love that song. Reminds me of being a little kid when it was popular.

Totally. It's sorta like "Neil Diamond, who wrote 'I'm A Believer' for the Monkees, dies"

On the bright side, apart from Daily Show jokes, he's obscure enough to avoid most of the usual mockery :)

I used to have vinyl of California Bloodlines from 1972,
one of those underground classics I spent a lot of time chasing down.

What a great song.

maxwellton 2008-01-21 03:24:21 AM
I'm told this is a true story: When Stewart wrote "Daydream Believer," the original lyric was "Now you know how funky I can be." The word "funky" was not in wide use at the time, and the network suits didn't know what it meant, and didn't particularly like the sound of it. So they made him change it to "happy." Stewart wasn't thrilled about the change, but went along with it. Then he received his first, big royalty check for the song. He looked at it and said "Happy is good."

xaveth 2008-01-21 03:51:26 AM
Who cares? Oh wait, it's another John Stewart... meh, who cares?

Darth_Lukecash [TotalFark] 2008-01-21 04:01:34 AM
Keep in mind, he was a replacement Kingston Trio, not part of the original group that brought Folk music to prominence in the 50
