'It is difficult to anticipate the content of the film, but freedom of expression doesn't mean the right to offend,' said Maxime Verhagen, the Foreign Minister

Wow - sounds like he's preemptively trying to keep his throat from getting slit by the Dutch Uulation Society.

If you can't offend then freedom of expression is pointless. Who needs freedom to say something that everyone finds congenial? The point is that it protects things people disagree with because most humans have no concept of liberty for others, which is why libertarians are such a minority.

Hmmm, indeed. Geert is a real intellectual and a charmer. Snappy hairdo too - well, if he were in the caste of the Muppets.

'It is difficult to anticipate the content of the film, but freedom of expression doesn't mean the right to offend,'

Yes, it does actually. I cannot control what you get offended at. It's impossible for me to do so. I can only control what I get offended at. I cannot control what you say or what you do. I can only control what I say or do. Eventually, something I say or do will be offensive to you, and eventually something you say or do will be offensive to me. At that point, it is our moral obligation to remember that freedom of expression means EXACTLY that, and if people get offended that it's their own fault. Unfortunate, maybe. Inevitable, hell yes. Bad, no not really.

If people get offended, oh well, they get offended.

The Grand Mufti of Syria, inciting wars and bloodshed by self-defining the things that incite wars and bloodshed.

Thing is, it's a retarded culture, but it's self-sustaining as well, at least for the moment.

gocheesego 2008-01-20 08:02:16 AM
Geert Wilders appears to be sensitive about his hair loss. He's taken the common (pathetic) route of trying to grow the rest of the remaining hair as long as possible, then making it 'pretty' while he still can by bleaching it (note the dark roots).

This film he's made? He only wants attention. When his family is (hopefully not) killed as a result of his actions, I hope he can finally admit to himself that yes, he is losing his hair. He doesn't need to start a culture war over it.

Person 2: wtf are you stupid?
Person 1: err, I'm offended at the idea of books!
Person 2: .....
Person 1: ..I'm offended when books are destroyed.
Person 2: What are you a librarian, get a life.
Person 1: When the book "War and Peace" is destroyed?
Person 2: That doesn't make any sense, at all.
Person 1: When the Koran is destroyed, I mean.
Person 2: Oh, well in that case I can't even consider doing something like that, I don't want to offend you or insult your religious faith, so I'll do anything in my power to make sure nobody shows that happening.

For me, this is the ultimate test of civilization.

If your faith is strong enough to survive such inflammatory criticism, then you are worthy of being judged civilized.

If not, you may openly be reviled as superstitious, tribal apes.

Methinks Islam is gonna fail this one.

No it won't. Somehow, this will, in the eyes of the world, turn out to be America's fault too. Everything that is wrong in the world is our fault. Just like how everything that goes wrong here is George Bush's fault.

As much as I dislike christianity, at least they don't threaten to murder anyone who criticizes their faith...yet. Muslims do. They not only threaten, but they carry out the threat.

It's funny that the filmmaker Van Gogh was murdered by someone who took offense to his film depicting muslims as violent and murderous. Way to reinforce that point.

I think the world needs to pay attention to the way that religious groups are bullying their governments and their people. It needs to stop, before the world is run by people willing to murder to enforce their ideas on the rest of us.
