It's the same thing in Canada, too. You can't walk around with a knife in your pockets for self-defense. So, basically, if you get assaulted and defend yourself with the knife, fending away the attacker, and you answer "for self-defense" when the cops ask you why you were carrying a knife, you might spend some time in jail.

I just finished a Jeremy Clarkson book where he pointed out that countries don't fall apart when the politicians are on holiday, others actually run the country and infrastructure. I think you will find this is more to do with police statistic gathering, rather than an actual rise. The police have been under a lot of pressure to be seen to be doing more, so they respond by arresting and cautioning more people who they would have in the past deal with by having a word, or getting them to apologise.

Police officers have complained for years that they have turned into paper pushers, and this is the result, a lot of paper.

i'm british (and in no way proud, for the record) and it's true that kids these days have no respect. i'm only 27 myself, but i swear 15 years ago kids were much better behaved. i got in a bit of trouble, but certainly never anything violent. and anyone who carries a knife 'for protection' is a farking idiot.

According to This the assault rate is surprisingly high, but a bit less than the US, interesting how the English-speaking countries are all fairly similar. As a Brit I must take solace in the fact that the murder rate is pretty low though.

*Sigh* Did you watch the video? Fighting against someone armed with a knife is stupid. If someone pulls a knife on you the best defense is running. But...in a life or death situation, being armed with a knife is better than being unarmed.
