Well, they've got a lot of territory to protect, and they don't have dozens of mechanized divisions to throw at invaders anymore. So I can see their point of view. It's NOT the same as threatening other nations with a nuclear strike because of what they might be researching.

So the Russians state that they are continuing to go by their previously announced policy? Stop the presses!

I don't believe the "U.S." agrees on first strike nuclear attack. The current government does not enjoy public support and they certainly do not represent democratic opinion. I would bet money that a clear majority of citizens in the U.S. would not support a nuclear first strike.

One of several important reasons the corrupt and ghoulish crew and their rancid party is being voted out of office. I just wish those who will be replacing them are better than they are.

I believe in first-strike nuclear attack. I believe the first ones we should strike are presently sitting in the White House.

BTW, did you know neutron bombs have a 200-yd. blast zone, but a 2-mile kill radius? All we'd have to do afterward is rebuild the White House and parts of the Mall. Everything else would only need to have the bodies removed.

Sorry, butnooclear first use has been US policy for decades, based on the fear of Soviet conventional superiority in Europe. It is a totally obsolete policy that should be changed, but it started long before Bush.

Sorry, but no. Neutron bombs aren't just magical death rays, they would have a yield of at least 1kt, which would cause damage in an area at least 2mi in diameter, not counting fires...

Of all the Fark filters, that one is the only one that truly annoys me. I think it's randomized or something so that it doesn't always replace the original word. It just replaces it often enough to make you look silly at an inopportune time.

How do we get a consensus of dumbfarks in control of nuclear weapons?

i agree that this one is the stupidest - but for the record, it's because the fark filters work on words that are spelled backwards, as well. (starts with the t in but, ends with the c in nuclear, see it now?) so, 'butnooclear' vs 'butnuclear' whereas 'and nuclear' vs 'andnuclear' both end up spelled correctly. and for the record, i don't really find the word offensive anyways.

/inappropriate words are way more fun than international relations ^nuclear weapons

quizybuck: So the Russians state that they are continuing to go by their previously announced policy?

It's different from the old Soviet policy of "no first strike." The radical movement from the 60s through the 80s used that pledge against western governments back then since the Russian had pledged never to be the first to use nuclear weapons in a conflict, whereas the evil west (read Nixon and Reagan mostly) had never made such a pledge. Indeed such a "first use" policy was the cornerstone of the military defense of western Europe against Communist military aggression. It's curious though how it was perceived by the European versus the American population. Americans thought that if the Soviets attacked through the Fulda Gap, the US would use tactical nuclear weapons on the Russian divisions coming in and the Soviets would respond by nuking the US forces in Europe. Americans thought the nuclear exchange would be confined to Europe leaving Ameria untouched. The Europeans on the other hand, thought that if the Soviets attacked through the Fulda Gap the US would launch its nuclear ICBMs on Russia and Russia would retaliate by launching on the US leaving Europe untouched. Such delusions sustained East/West foreign policy for decades.

I can't imagine any country that possesses nuclear weapons refusing to use them if they were invaded and their conventional forces were getting their asses kicked.

I hope that anyone who has that sort of conventional army ready to roll out also suffers from my lack of imagination, as it may well be the only thing giving them pause.

The ultimate end result of unilaterally moving new weapon systems into recently allied NATO countries surrounding a tyranical Putin and his crew of oligarchal maniacs is wot again?

Oh right, THIS.

Pre-emption?

Quatchi has this old Andy Capp comic book.

On the cover of the thing there's Andy in a bar.
On the floor there's this unconcious guy he's obviously just clobbered.
Andy is obviously more than a few sheets to the wind.
The cop talking to Andy asks the following...

"Let me get this straight... You thought he was gonna hit you so you hit him back first in self defense?"

The joke, of course, being that only a drunken moran would consider that a plausible excuse.

Some joke.

Preemptive war...a day that will live in infamy

THIS.

Don't think of it as a pre-emptive strike. Think of it as "assertive disarmament".
