FTFA: The physical exertion, causing them to burn 8,000 calories a day on an intake of about 5,500 calories, meant that Dunwoody lost even more weight than he expected - about three stone instead of two.

There's an exercism regimen for fatties. 45 lbs of weight loss in 49 days. Could've been much more if you'd slice just a bit more out of the intake.

Just call me Dunwoody of the Antartic

Do the Brits spell "Arctic"/"Antarctic" without the first C, or is there just a typo in the Daily Mail headline?

/honestly wondering

TheGreyPiper 2008-01-19 08:21:16 PM
It's all bullshiat, I don't believe a word of it, it's in the Daily Mail.

For 49 days, Dunwoody and expedition leader Doug Stoup had resisted temperatures dropping to 45 below zero, terrifying crevasses, rutted ice and deep snow, blizzards, altitude sickness and snow blindness...

/Think how much worse it would have been if Global Warming hadn't moderated the temperature so well. Might have been, oh, 46 below.

HornedFrogsFan 2008-01-19 08:22:16 PM
Not that I would even try something like that, even if I was the Poster Girl of health.

SlowTimedRapid 2008-01-19 08:22:24 PM
the two survivors drove themselves relentlessly to make up the five days' disruption and ensure they reached their destination within the allotted 56 days before the severe weather closed in.

So would that pace be "strenuous" or "grueling"?

I'm guessing "grueling".

/got nothing
//using British standards for punctuation vs. quotation marks
///just because

I think it starts with putting one foot in front of the other.
Then, another step, with a tugging motion to the sled of provisions behind you. Repeat.

hero? stupid.

mudpants 2008-01-19 08:26:32 PM
In other news Chelsea now measures distance in miles and weight in stones and has been moved to within 660 miles of the south pole. What a wonderous age we live in.

What does his 44th birthday and walking 660 miles to the South Pole have to do with each other?

Next year when he turns 45, is he going to was 970 miles to the Equator or something? Duh.

One Steve Fossett disappears and another one comes to take his place. Osmosis is wierd like that.

So being a Jump Jockey, this jackoff has enough vacation days to take 49 days off to walk to the S. Pole?

Thanks, man.

Actually, you second post made me LOL. Now I'm gonna have that song in my head all night!

And now he's trying to see how long he can balance an egg on his feet.

PastryChef 2008-01-19 09:03:55 PM
I just wish they had described the route they took. 660 miles means they started somewhere close to McMurdo-I don't know of anyone who's walked from Mawson Station (Australian).
Being a Jump jockey he would have been in pretty good shape, but not a lot of insulation there-loosing 42 pounds would have lead to feeling a lot colder.
I still don't understand why people match up feats of physical endurance with giving to charity, but it seems to work. Almost as well as "vote for me or I shoot the dog."

Uncle Karl 2008-01-19 09:09:29 PM

Why not?
4-8 weeks is normal in most of the civilized world.

Americans get screwed on that one.

Certainly a worthy task but heroic?

OscarTamerz 2008-01-19 09:44:46 PM
Dunwoody lost even more weight than he expected - about three stone instead of two.

Having started at 12-and-a-half stone, he said: "I'm really light, even lighter than when I rode.

So what kind of fatassed jockeys do they have in the UK? If the guy weighed more than 133 pounds as a jockey he would have never made it at Del Mar or Hollywood. Most of them run around 100.

He's a former jump jockey, so like most professional sportsmen he's probably having the previously-forbidden food.

Weight limits for UK racing are 126 lb for a Flat jockey, and 168 lb for a jump jockey. Jump has higher to accommodate the semi-pro fox-hunters, and the usual rule-of-thumb applies that the lower weight you are, the greater variety of rides are available.

How exactly does walking make one a hero?

southaustin [TotalFark] 2008-01-19 10:56:31 PM
Heroes save babies from burning buildings and whatnot. "Cool" tag woulda been more appropriate for so many reasons.

5,500 calories is far more than the average American junk food junkie eats. And he burned 8,000? Probably, most of that was burned trying to stay warm.

Rotsky?

Uh, no, at least as I understand the term: To "Rotsky [something/someone]" is to attempt to correct grammar/spelling that is already correct.

"Antartic" is wrong. "Antarctic" is right. Therefore, I did not "Rotsky" the headline -- you "Rotskied" (sp. in past tense?) me, if only tentatively (hedging with that cute little question mark).

NakedApe 2008-01-20 01:25:45 AM
I never want to be anywhere that's -45 degrees.

Isn't there a "moron" tag out there?

ssrat 2008-01-20 03:48:04 AM
Now that I have seen Top Gear, the best way is to DRIVE it, though a little saner than they way they did it.

/PLUS no squatting
//GENIUS idea
