Kublai Khan [TotalFark] 2008-01-19 07:29:35 PM
What a surprise.

Have Canadians never heard of realpolitik?

milk_plus 2008-01-19 07:52:21 PM
The truth hurts (not as much as torture but still).

mattbin 2008-01-19 07:52:25 PM
Oh, has the USA stopped torturing people? News to me.

Kublai Khan, Canadians have heard of realpolitik. We just choose to be better than that. It's unfortunate that the USA has regressed to a "might makes right" point of view.

mattbin: Kublai Khan, Canadians have heard of realpolitik. We just choose to be better than that.

Did you not read the article? Your government just gutlessly folded, it didn't choose to be better than that. Realpolitik wins even in Canada.

Morality in global politics, what a humorously naive idea.

You know, speaking as a European, I don't find Canadians like you and Americans to be terribly dissimilar. You're both absurdly pleased with yourselves, for example. I can't imagine a Brit ever announcing in a self-satisfied tone that "We just choose to be better than that."

If your so much better, why not stick to your assertion? Realpoitik? With the resurgence of Russia, Europe and your nation have gotten a good lesson on how that works.

Canada, if you really are that hungry for attention, you should try to copy Britney Spears, that's going to get you even more time in the media.

I must admit, however, the fact that you removed Israel from the list, in spite of the lies of all these angry lefties, that shows some balls. Kudos.

Maher Arar.

Oh wait, technically since he was shipped to Syria to be tortured, it wasn't technically the Americans who did it. It was the Syrians.

Funny, though, that Canada has so little tolerance for free speech. Ernst Zundel did nothing but speak and publish some goofy shiat, but he got deported anyway.

You also must understand that Canada, like our ACLU, probably considers it "torture" when prisoners' don't get their favorite food on Sunday, or their orange jumpsuits come back from the prison laundry improperly pressed.

So some speech is free-er than other? You'd have to imprison or deport half of Fark if "inciting hatred" was a crime.

I was looking for flights to Havana today and Expedia.ca doesn't list them, because the US told them Cuba is full of evil communists.

there's a difference between free speech and "You farking Jews, we're coming for you and we're going to get all of you this time". Actual quote.

Also, the guy was not deported because of free speech, he was deported because he wasn't a Canadian citizen and had no visa.

You know, we've already done the whole "Canada has a different view on the concept of 'free speech'" thing. There is no "absolute" right to free speech, that right, like all other rights, need to be balanced against each other. Up here, we generally balance it differently than you guys do down there.

Man, I always thought of Canadians as my slightly more conscientious neighbors to the north. Way to fold under political pressure. Most respectable Americans are ashamed of our undeniable torturing of political prisoners and want it to stop. Having other countries avert their eyes is a tacit acceptance of the practice.

BoozePenguin 2008-01-19 10:46:00 PM
Good, the reasons given for putting the americans there in the first place are all things that go on in canadian prisons. This whole thing has been retarded.

milk_plus 2008-01-19 10:46:17 PM
I guess that means they won't be watching while we torture people anymore.

So is this like in those court shows on TV where the lawyer knows they aren't supposed to say something, but they say it anyway. And then after the other lawyer does the 'objection' thing, they just say "withdrawn"?

So it's out there, but they never really said it, wink wink.

Tatsuma [TotalFark] 2008-01-19 10:49:41 PM
Some of you people should realize that this might have something to do with Canadians being caught torturing Afghans and they decided to start pointing fingers at America and Israel so eagerly in order to avoid looking like hypocrites.

m2313: Fascism is right wing.

No it's not. It's actually a mixture of the worst from the left and from the right.

Lefties can be fascists too. Cowards that want to beat you up in dark alleys because you espouse different ideas within the real of normalcy are the first line of attack of these fascist thugs.

Fascism is characterized by anti-communism, appeals to religion, militarism, nationalism, corporatism and opposes liberalism.
Doesn't sound left wing.

No it's not.

Fascism is an authoritarian political ideology generally tied to a mass movement that considers individual subordinate to the interests of the state, party or society as a whole.

The idea that individuals don't matter as much as society as a whole certainly is a leftist and not right-wing idea.

BoozePenguin 2008-01-19 10:58:21 PM
m2313

Robert Mugabe
is fascist in that he is authoritarian in the extreem and supports his goon buddies who run the economy in that country, and he's a marxist who the left wing used to LOVE.

Mugabe has become something of a romantic symbol of anti-capitalist imperialism for those who're weary of the tribulations of modern life and domination by the Anglo-American Empire. Most Africans sympathise with Mugabe's frustrations concerning the land issue, which are grievances of the majority of Zimbabweans. But Mugabe, with his savage acuity, has hijacked these issues for his own political ends. He has created nation-statism, which is fascist in its extreme, to perpetuate his reign. This loses him the support of those who're not ignorant of the consequences of things in the seed; who also appreciate and learn from history

Tatsuma [TotalFark] 2008-01-19 10:59:16 PM
There's actually plenty of fascist countries that had a left-wing bent. There still are plenty today.

I might actually give Goldberg's book a try

Just becuase that's entirely accurate doesn't mean it's true. Sort of like the fact that the US government allows torture. I mean, they do, yes, but becuase they use a different word they're automatically in the clear.

For instance: I sure do hate Tatsuma becuase he's a zionist.

That sentence WOULD be anti-semetic if I'd said Jew, but I didn't so no one's allowed to get mad about it. That's how it works, right? It helps that I have about the same understanding of what zionist means as he has about what facist means.

Actually it's an authoritarian idea.
Fascism cares as much for the individual as communism would.

BoozePenguin 2008-01-19 11:02:37 PM
Are there so few canadians who think it's retarded to compile a list of countries where prisoners face abuse and then put our biggest ally and largest trading partner on it for activities we conduct as well?

From a practical position it's stupid, since the us is our biggest trading partner and our economy is heavily dependent on trade with it, and it's even stupider because the reasons incriminate us as well.

Oh, give me a farking break, the idea that the welfare of everyone is better than personal welfare is inherently leftist.

Smoking bans, banning trans fat, etc... all follow that line of thought.
