Much thanks and a good morning to you too, subby.

Nice.

I'm lucky enough to have seen both live. Warren and Derek are amazing.

I can't wait for the guitar hero version.

Fat old white guys(or dead black guys) playing open chord slide guitar = "awesome"

if this was a video of Jack White playing EXACTLY THE SAME THING it would be a "White Stripes sucks" thread.

I like good sounding music period.

Ry Cooder,Jack White,Warren Haynes,Derek Trucks,Lighnin' Hopkins,Elmore James,Hubert Sumlin,Jimmy Page,Ron Wood,Muddy Waters,John Lee Hooker,RL Burnside,Fred McDowell....etc are ALL quite superb and I have enjoyed their music for many years now.

However....I must confess that in my opinion, one of the meanest and most greasy low down savage slide riffs ever is the guitar part from the Stone Roses "Love Spreads" --it is swampy as hell and totally amazing. It reminds me of Ron Wood/The Faces sound.

Check it out on youtube.

It was super awesome when Warren Haynes came out to play during the DMB show in Central Park. One of my favorite guitarists.

Derwood 2008-01-19 02:14:39 PM
I lit a Derek Trucks concert a few months back. I was less impressed by the slide guitar than I was by him playing blues without a pick

Moses To Sandy Koufax 2008-01-19 02:16:15 PM
I didn't know Rosie O'Donnell and Bill Maher were such talented guitarists.

I guess they are single threats after all.

Trucks is so nasty

I worked for Truck's band at the Gibson Guitar Festival in New Port RI a few years back. Nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. It was a perfect day... if his drummer Rico hadn't snapped the house kit in half.

You haven't heard slide guitar until you've heard Sonny Landreth.

I think the White Stripes thing is usually more about the drums than the guitar/singing. I mean watching videos of whatsherface barely hanging on to a 4/4 beat is just embarassing to watch.

I dunno about Derek, but Warren usually plays in standard, ala Duane Allman. Playing slide in standard tuning requires very skillful right-hand string muting technique, and Warren might do it better than anyone.

ZoSo_the_Crowe 2008-01-19 04:31:01 PM
Er, not to mention that Warren usually plays slide on a guitar with its action set too low for slide, or as Warren likes to call it, "too low for slide and too high for no slide."

spreadhead21 2008-01-19 05:00:33 PM
warren = standard tuning

derek = open e chord

I'm lucky enough to have seen both live. Warren and Derek are amazing.

I'm lucky enough to seen them both 30 or so times live. I saw Derek Solo in a small theater in Upstate NY. His wife came out and they smoked the stage,

Great find subby, I have the DVD, and was at one of the shows where they filmed this at the Beacon. Can't wait till March !!!

Peakin at the Beacon !

Thanks for the brochure. While I'm here I'd like to say that the headlines in the music section are way too obnoxious and pretentious. The best music comments, however, are like "OMG IF U DON'T LIKE DREAMTHEATRE, U DON'T KNOW MUSIC"

Anyway, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jN5vqEyV7g

There's Son House playing slide guitar. I'd submit the link to fark, but I'm not a TFer so...

Duane Allman please

You don't have to be a TFer. Just submit it like regular jackoffs do.

Damn. If only Rick Astley played slide guitar...

DrZiffle: Duane Allman please

What's so cool about Trucks and Haynes are that they tend to play like Duane. Similar, not the same.

Wish I could link to Duane's rendition of "Goin' Down Slow." The only place I heard it was on the Dreams box set. Better than any other cover I've heard. Raw, slow burn blues.

/Damn these dying before their time bastards

dereksmalls 2008-01-19 08:06:46 PM
Goin Down Slow; Mike Bloomfield's cover with the Electric Flag. raw, slow burn blues, as well.
Duane; who knew he could sing?

DrZiffle 2008-01-19 09:07:45 PM
Welcome to the machine: Sorry, I was away from the computer (I know, I'm so ashamed).

Have you heard the version of "Goin Down Slow" here?

http://www.amazon.com/Anthology-Duane-Allman/dp/B000001FLK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UT F8&s=music&qid=1200794667&sr=8-1

I like Duane 'cause he fights (fought) the urge to noodle--unlike some of his mates in the AB band.
