Minor??? In most advanced states in the world 16 is more than enough to not be considered a minor for drinking purposes. After all most societies do not subscribe to the primitive idea that alcohol should not be consumed by those under 21.

Actually, in Japan, as TFA states, it is illegal to serve to someone under 20. I know US bashing is in vogue right now, so I'll give you a pass.

Had you RTFA you'd have known that the drinking age in Japan is 20.

FTFA

Alcohol consumption is prohibited for those under 20 in Japan.

I used to hate the drinking laws, but that all changed after I went to this college town in Spain a few years ago. Due to the summer vacation for the University students there, they rented out all the classrooms to American programs. There was a nightlife there supported by the schools, and so they catered it to the people who were there for the American programs to make up for lost revenue during the break. The problem was, though, that the vast majority of these language abroad groups were for American high schoolers, so if you went out to the bars it was just a bunch of little kids grinding on each other. Even more disturbing, these weird old guys would go sharking through the crowds trying to pick up 15 year olds. (here's a tip: refer to old people in Spain as veijos -- they love it, trust me)

After that experience, it made me appreciate that everyone in yhe bars here are at least 21.

/although clubs in the city I live in are still like middle school dance grind fests

Yeah, I think they even use the same word for it in their language as we do in ours.

Hostesses are not high priced hookers - you only talk, drink, sing with them. They will pour you the drinks, light your cigs, bring you food - just a woman who will cater to your every PG whim.

However...sometimes you can setup a "date" afterwards where anything goes...but the girl has to either really like you, or really like your money.

/been to some here in Little Tokyo (Los Angeles).
//Seen some in Japan - much better selection of girls :)

A 16yr old can't drink in Canada legally either. (specific allowances excepted).

One thing I do find interesting is that back in the early 70's, the drinking age in many of the States was 18. In much of Canada, it was 21. An interesting flip-flop happened during that decade.

jbernie 2008-01-19 01:36:04 PM
So this is the difference between Japan and America, when it happens here the bill is something unbelievable like $100,000, when it happens there and he did order a lot of drinks it is $3500.

That or it was a skanky club.

Yeah, $3500? An outrageous bill? Ha. That's just another typical Friday night.

But what if instead of "protecting" our children from alcohol until they're 21, we (Americans) taught them how to consume it properly? Based on your description, I get the image of kids that haven't touched a drop of liquor in their life going out and binging. I can see your point about wanting to have a haven from teenagers, but in general I think the idea that we should withhold alcohol until some magic age where people automatically understand how to handle booze isn't the best approach.

Gosub: But what if instead of "protecting" our children from alcohol until they're 21, we (Americans) taught them how to consume it properly?

That's based on a gross misunderstanding of US under-age drinking laws.

In many states, underage (ie 21) drinking is not prohibited. Very few states have outright bans.

SnakeLee: After that experience, it made me appreciate that everyone in yhe bars here are at least 21.

Most of the skanks in US bars are 19 and 20 years old. There are bars that cater to every age group now, why would that change if the drinking age was lowered?

Klivian 2008-01-19 01:52:17 PM
rka

Last I checked, those under 21 can not buy alcohol, and all states have this pesky law about "Furnishing alcohol to a minor." That comes pretty close to an outright ban, wouldn't you say?

Are you talking about the distinction betweeen drinking alcohol and buying it, as in you can't buy alcohol until you're 21, but you can drink it legally? I recalling hearing something about kids being able to drink in public a parent/guardian was there, but that was a long time ago. Even if it was in your own home, you'd probably get charged with some kind of child endangerment for serving under-21's alcohol, even if it was strictly legal.

rka 2008-01-19 01:56:52 PM
