What the hell is Subby talking about? February 5th is going to be the tits. That's where the show is going to be.

Over on Huffington Post, there's a story that Edwards is the king maker -- If he stays in after South Carolina, and it's still close between Clinton and Obama, he could very well cede those votes to who he wants to win. Hopefully Obama.

I voted!

It's cold and rainy right now in upstate SC. Not crowded at all at my precinct, but it is a somewhat rural area. McCain will win SC, you heard it here first!

Glad you voted, for whoever. Why do you think it's McCain? Poll show a dead heat.

Thought Huckaberry was gonna nose him out cos of the massive Fundy Factor in SC.

Anybody but Hillary for the Dems.

Bacontastesgood 2008-01-19 02:47:53 PM
I'm for Huckabee, because I think we need a president whose eyes point in different directions. It will keep our enemies on their toes.

Socratease 2008-01-19 03:01:45 PM
The Palmetto poll, which is produced by the heads Clemson's political science department, shows McCain with a strong lead.
Summary (new window)
Poll (new window)

They're my professors, and seem very confident it will be McCain who holds a 7% lead over Huckabee and a 14% lead over the third highest candidate. Granted there are still many undecideds, but South Carolinians like to pick a winner, and that appears to be McCain. Also, I suspect more of those undecideds will go to Thompson than Huckabee. The evangelical bloc, according to them, is not exactly a monolith in SC that will flock to the biggest Jesus freak. 70% of GOP responders go to church at least once a week, so they will helpharkabee but it's not like 50% of the church goers here will vote Huckabee. His weak stance on immigration and taxes doesn't bode well here, and Fred Thompson will draw from the folksy voters that might otherwise support Huck. It may very well be close, but McCain will win big in the major cities, I think. A lot of our national guard is fighting this war too, and they really like McCain because of his war record and leadership. Electability and leadership are important qualities here.

On a side note, I think all if not most of the precincts use computer ballots with no paper trail. Ivotronic I think is the company. I definitely didn't trust it based purely on common sense, but what can you do, not vote? Maybe that's the idea.

So is this our Nevada Dem caucus discussion thread...?

Longtime Lurker 2008-01-19 03:06:58 PM
honestly, even though the situation is so farked up that my state's delegates are taken away (florida), I much prefer this system than a national primary. The small state campaigning keep the media darling from sweeping away the race. If we had a national primary, Clinton wins the democratic primary in and landslide. Because of Iowa, we may have the chance to appoint someone electable.

I agree. I like the "one state at a time" way of doing it, but it would be nice if the order of the states was randomized each election cycle.

DamnYankees: Can someone explain why the Nevada voting is over at noon? I don't understand this.

The Dem Nevada caucus is scheduled to take place for two hours, starting at 11am local time. Some (smaller) caucuses will end earlier. For the most part we'll know the results by 3pm EST.

He has a real shot to beat Hilldogg in SC. SC really really despises Clinton, and this is Edwards' birth state. Besides I heard him say on a radio interview that he's in it for Feb. 5 and beyond. It could eventually come down to a brokered convention for the Democrats.

THIS! Just make sure the first states are small...

Echoic 2008-01-19 03:31:43 PM
Yeah, having all states vote simultaneously is a very bad idea because name recognition would be more important than anything else.

I like the idea of randomizing the order every time.

States and the parties are allowed to determine their respective nomination process. A standard process was never designed by the constitution, because political parties were never designed by the constitution. Primaries and caucuses evolved out of practice within the states instead of ruled by a federal standard. It comes down to which method the state and political party prefers to nominate - a secret ballot primary which can be open or closed to registered party members, or a discussion and voicing of support among members of the private political organization like the Iowa Democrats.

A brokered convention would be interesting, that's never happened in my lifetime and I'd be highly entertained to watch it go down. Only problem is the fear that they'd be stupid and we'd wind up with Hillary as the nominee, what with the establishment liking her and all.
