I don't think manatees read MySpace. They're mostly on Facebook.

Well, a lot of manatees have some extra time on their hands until the strike ends, so they are probably branching out.

Most animals on this planet either run away from, or attack, large scary objects and/or potential predators.

Anything that just sits there stupidly letting boats run over it, or humans poke at it with a stick, has earned its place in the Darwin Hall of Shame.

More info would be helpful. Sometimes the enviros get a little, shall we say, 'overenthusiastic' about what they consider harassment. Locally there's a group who keeps threatening to sic the feds on anybody who walks near a seal on the beach.

Were these guys touching the manatee, yelling taunts at it, or what exactly?

"Harassing the manatee?" So, that's what they call it these days?

Treize26 2008-01-19 01:43:40 PM
Harassing a manatee? Jesus Christ, it's an endangered species? So what? It's no more or less endangered today after being "harassed" than it was before the incident. Our society really needs to re-evaluate its priorities.

It's a manatee. Dugong. Sea cow. These animals are mellow and slow. Before people started cutting them up with boat motors, they didn't have much to worry about. No evolutionary pressures for them to be quick or quick-witted.

Seems to be a more appropriate use of resources then going after non-violent drug users.

Very interesting image. It's dated 2001. Of course there is a fark meme with the same exact phrase with a manatee as the Hindenburg airship that blew up. IIRC that meme came about later than 2001. At the time everyone lavished the farker with praise for coming up with that phrase. The photoshop may have been original, but the phrase seems like it wasn't.

But it could be the same person as who wrote that cartoon, for all I know. Just thought it was interesting.

Longtime Lurker 2008-01-19 01:48:11 PM
you can't touch, chase, or even tap your boat to try to get the manatee's attention because of Florida Law. Most of the locals know this law down where I am (Sarasota), but it's the tourists who cause the problems.

/there is one exception in Crystal River, FL where you're legally allowed to swim with the manatees, but there are restrictions on what you can and and can't do when in the water, and a lot of the locals want the law changed.

humaniacal 2008-01-19 01:48:28 PM
actually the manatee is pretty cool. it leaves everything else alone, why should we be allowed to bother it? for our own sense of entertainment?

Our society really needs to re-evaluate its priorities.

i agree. what kind of idiot needs to entertain themselves bugging this animal? get a freaking hobby.

The "enviros" didn't pass the law, numbnuts, nor does what "they" consider harassment matter. It's a federal law, you can't even be within a certain amount of feet of a manatee. So it really doesn't matter what they were doing. A Federal court made the judgement, not a bunch of "enviros."

Polar Bear Cub: and ultimately succeeding in hooking and fighting a manatee in a Fort Lauderdale-area canal.

Alright, I can stand behind the decision in this case then.

having seen plenty of manatees in my life (florida native), i like to refer to them as sea potatos.

because that's really what they are. they're like a big potato floating in the water.

Manatee's aren't endangered anymore.

A friend of mine who's a Marine Biologist for Florida Fish & Wildlife has told me that they've made a great comeback and are more prevalent than ever, but they can't be removed from the Endangered Species List because of pressure from the "Save the Manatee" cottage industry that makes a lot of money from donations, manatee tourism, and selling manatee related t-shirts & trinkets to tourists.

If it comes off the list, all that mystique goes away, and so does the money.

I see Manatees swimming around in Tampa Bay all the time. They're common.

I dunno. It's possible for two people completely unbeknownst to one another to think of the same pun. Puns are easy; dozens of them probably pop into your head each year. The English language has been around a long time and is currently in use by at least half a billion people. It's running out of original puns.

I highly doubt this... the populations are so low and the species so vulnerable that removal of protection would pretty much be a death sentence. We see plenty in Sarasota, but that doesn't mean the population isn't extremely vulnerable.

You'll just have to take my word on this one (perhaps a Lexis search could prove it, if someone reading this has access to an account, but I do not), but "Oh, the huge manatee!" existed long before 2001. I'd say it even predates 1990, because I recall hearing it at least before I graduated highschool.

The novelty-ish band 'The Moldy Peaches' does a song where the fat emo girl sings 'I'm just a crack in the @$$ of humanity...I'm a huge manateee...'

Not sure how old that is.

Not the master criminals that were sentenced, but some youtube of divers shadowing and harassing manatees with photo lights.
