I personally don't really care about corruption in the city and I have lived here my entire life.I find the only people who are upset about corruption in Chicago don't actually live in the city. Everybody knows you have to know someone to get one of those sweet city jobs.

I freaking hate having this city in my state. IL would be a great place if we did not have this shiat-hole filled with corruption.

(Though I know it's cliché:) THIS. I grew up near Chicago, and people are pretty apathetic about the corruption. It's equal on both sides, Republican and Democrat, and so long as the city keeps running, NO ONE CARES.

xcoastie: I freaking hate having this city in my state. IL would be a great place if we did not have this shiat-hole filled with corruption.

It's state-wide, downstater, so drop your holier-than-thou attitude. Springfield's not filled with legislative Boy Scouts.

Chicago is a fantastic city, filled with great food, vibrant culture, and Midwest politeness. Too bad you've never actually visited it.

/lives in SoCal now.
//loves the weather, but the "all propositions, all the time!" form of government is annoying. Seriously, the California legislature doesn't actually legislate; they just write propositions and have people vote on them so that they don't have to take any personal responsibility for the resulting laws.

onid70: Richard Daley may not be the most articulate man in the world but he is NOT dumb.

Let me rephrase: Richard Daley is not smart enough to be mayor of Chicago. But, looking at anyone else who could be mayor, he is the best thing out there to be mayor of Chicago. That sentence, in and of itself, is a sad statement on the present condition of Chicago.

For what it's worth, it would not matter who is mayor. The political corruption is widespread, from the alderman who rule their own private fiefdoms, to the movers-and-shakers who run the town from the shadows, all the way up to the mayors that come and go and who have to bow and courtesy to that clout.

The headline is correct: allowing the administration to oversee the cleanup of corruption is ludicrous.

I thought MJ would prefer opening a Wal-Mart store. Cause, you know, they always have those 12-year old boys underwear half off specials.

As somebody who has driven across the midwest en-route to the east coast more than a dozen times, this comment made me lol for some reason. Maybe because I came from a hick state that actually made parts of Iowa look big city to me.

But in siding with the mayor, Andersen, who got his job by supporting Mayor Richard Daily said the city's plan contains "important safeguards" to make sure that jobs aren't awarded based on political considerations. "The city will be given an opportunity to show that the skepticism is ill-founded," Andersen wrote.

Freeper_Madness: Why is Chicago so corrupt?

I say this as someone who generally leans Democratic, but one of the problems in chicago is that it has been under one party rule for too long. It doesn't matter who it is (dems, repubs, green party, etc), one group of people entrenched in power for too results in unchecked corruption.

Bad news for ya: Chicago is the only reason to visit Illinois. Sorry but Springfield and Rockford just don't cut it.

While Chicago actually is an interesting city, they did give this nation The Daleys. And that is just unforgivable.

THIS.

In any place, be it big city, sprawling suburb, or a one horse rural town, when one group runs the whole show the entire time, you end up with corruption. The shame of it is how easily people accept and overlook it, just so long as "the trains run on time."

Imagine how much better Chicago (and the entire state of IL) could be without that corruption spawned out of that ethical morass.

But... The trains DON'T run on time. Or at least the Metra can't be relied on.

I have to go back there in about three months after living in Japan for 6 years, and am not looking forward to it. However, I do have a relative (by marriage) that is going to run for a Chicago suburb mayor's office. Hopefully he'll give me a hand finding gainful employment...
