man, it's going to be funny when everyone figures out that they'll be repaying this later - several times over.

Dear Taxpayer,

You didn't run up your credit card balance for Christmas. We're giving you this check and we'll tell you later how much it'll cost you in taxes and fees. Cash it and buy something quickly, or China will bump up the rate on short-term loans to us, and we'll really be farked.

Sincerely,

The Worst Administration Ever

This president's fiscal policy is essentially the equivalent of using two credit cards to pay each other off over and over and over again.

Yeah, it's called "staying the course," commie.

I'm sure everyone taking issue with this will, on good conscience, not accept this and will destroy the check upon receipt. Personally, I don't know this is a good idea, but at least it may go towards easing the pain of my annual fleecing in April.

jasonmicron 2008-01-18 12:38:45 PM
White House advisers said that, in current terms, 1 percent would amount to around $145 billion, which is along the lines of what private economists say should be sufficient to help give the economy a short-term boost.

Since apparently most of you missed this part. Private, as in not a Bush lackey. But then again, this is Fark where it's cool to hate on Bush for doing something and then hate on him again when it works like it did in 2001.

How short is short-term? Two weeks? Two months? Is it even worth bothering? Maybe we could use this correction to bring fiscal policy back in line.

Agreed. This "rebate" of my own money is like getting a cash advance on my credit card. "Oooh, look, money in my pocket now. All is well." I don't know too many financial advisors who would consider that good advice for anyone planning to live longer than a billing cycle.

Excuse me, but what the fark are you talking about? Was that where we all got $700 checks that were really just a temporary return of our withheld tax, that then came off our tax refunds the next April?

It was bullshiat then, and it's bullshiat now.

This, except I think I remember the number being over $1,000,000,000,000. That's a trillion.

/grampa, why do we pay 50% taxes?

Actually this is Fark where reflexive tin foil hatters wince at any toe not on the (discredited) GOVERNMENT ALWAYS EVUL line. Private, as in $145B injected *now*. The fraud comes when Bush and his lackeys cite a $145B tax cut as an injection *now*. You want to inject that money now you do as Bernanke said, give it to people who will spend it now, preferably on stuff made in the USA

Hey, don't you call it a correction. That's what the Republicans will call it if they take the White House. The Democrats will call it a recession and I'll still have no money.

Mr. Coffee Nerves: They're going to print "NOT VALID AT WAL-MART" on all the checks?

Was paraphrasing a bit of Bernanke testimony at yesterday's budget hearing. It'll primarily wind up overseas, paraphrasing him even more he cited software and only one other thing that I can't remember clearly what it was as the two primary products that would stimulate if the stim was by way of faster accel depreciation and business tax cuts. I suppose that means everyone should go out and buy Vista and Office 07

Wonderful! The president can't be a bad man if he's giving us free money, right?

DarnoKonrad 2008-01-18 01:22:52 PM
"Letting Americans keep more of their money should increase consumer spending," he said.

You don't get to keep your money when you spend it on consumer shiat from China Bush.

Is there nothing tax cuts can't fix?

Shrugging Atlas 2008-01-18 01:23:59 PM
If I get a check (which I likely won't since my wife and I make too much) I'll just put it to my mortgage since we have no other bills to pay. That or I'll stick it in a CD.

I'll not go out and spend it just to spite this dipshiat and his rob from peter to pay paul economic 'plan.'

The Republic is in the hands of madmen.

Sufficient, sure. Do those economists take into account where the money's going to come from?

It'd be a different story if we had a $145 billion surplus sitting around. But Bush wants to give us money that he doesn't have, so in the end we're only going to have to give it all back to him, and then some.

Meh, I supported the rebate back in 2001 because the administration was still seriously talking about spending cuts. Tax cuts plus spending cuts are great. The administration is giving NO hints at spending cuts right now, which means that this rebate will have to be paid by further loans. Its the difference between going out to dinner to celebrate your new raise, or going out to dinner because you are about to file bankruptcy anyways :)

My god, I did not think anyone could beat out hillary's handout. Showes what I know. Let us have a small correction in the economy, please, please. I do not know how much longer we can fluf up our economy without massive problems later.

Yeah, beat on Bush all you want, but watch Hill, Barry and Johnny fall over themselves to support (most of) the measure. I think that all three are about to make me sick, and I skew liberal. Just not fiscally. Government cheese won't cure economic ills.

Of course, any bill that makes the tax cuts permanent will be poison to the Democracks. The Rethuglicans will spin that as the Dems being anti-middle class, making the Recession worse, etc. The Dems will put their own bill forward for 200 billions or more in response.

Worse: this will tip us forward towards permanent damage, and won't stave off a recession. These things never work.

Heh, this summarizes deficit threads.

Optimists: Deficit spending is often a smart strategy for growth. And by growing the economy, you reduce the debt burden. Private economists agree.

Pessimists: Balderdash! We deserve recessions. The more the better, until we learn the hard way some economic lessons.
