He claimed his daddy marched with Martin Luther King? We can do that now? Cool. My daddy did too...well not march so much, he probably would have sorta kinda pigeon-toed it.

Romney may well be a wishywashy twat, but that guy is a douchebag right along with him. If you see the video, the journalist is being told by a guy later on that he's acting unprofessional and argumentative, and I can't help but agree. The guy was being a dick. Romney is twisting words around, and I guess you can see it from his point or another point, but the way the guy just kept pressing is rank unprofessional.

Yes, because it's the journalists' job to be supportive and accept everything a candidate says as truth?

About damned time journalists started calling politicians on their bullshiat.

wejash [TotalFark] 2008-01-18 01:27:46 AM
Can Romney at least pick a lie and stick to it? That's probably all the reporter was trying to tell him.

We don't mind being lied to. We mind when they change their minds a lot. There's a theory it might involve thinking and reconsidering what you have said...we're Americans. We don't like that "thinking" shiat.

"I don't have lobbyists that are tied to my ..."

Associated Press journalist Glen Johnson interrupted at this point to say that Ron Kaufman, one of Romney's top advisors, is a lobbyist.

"Did you hear what I said, Glen?" a clearly irritated Romney said. "I said, 'I don't have lobbyists running my campaign,' and he's not running my campaign. He's an adviser.

Romney is twisting words around, and I guess you can see it from his point or another point, but the way the guy just kept pressing is rank unprofessional.

How on earth can you see it from Romney's point of view?

Romeny states that he has no lobbyistgs "tied" to his campaign. Journalist points out he has a lobbyist as advisor.
CLEARLY being an adviser is being "tied" to a campaign.

I mean, come on.

Bill Frist 2008-01-18 01:58:50 AM
f you see the video, the journalist is being told by a guy later on that he's acting unprofessional and argumentative,

FTA:

Television showed a member of Romney's media staff telling Johnson after the briefing that he was "out of line" and not to be "argumentative" with the campaign.

It wasn't "a guy", it was a Romney dude... how is that a surprise?

Bill Frist 2008-01-18 02:02:33 AM
In December, Romney said he had seen his father march with civil rights leader Martin Luther King. Campaign aides later said he was speaking figuratively.

That one was also hilarious.

Someone should make a top 10 Romney fark-ups. The King one and the one where he declares he never called McCain's program "amnesty" and then the journalist points out his own campaign ad calls it hat and plays the clip then Romney goes "Oh, I haven't seen that one" have to be near the top.

You're right. We should just get rid of journalists all together and have one guy ask a politician uncontroversial and scripted questions to which there will be no follow up or verification.

Christ...some people will defend anything.

I believe I've read some pages from this playbook before... hold on... trying to recollect... ah yes:

"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement....Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true." -- Bill Clinton

So far we got

1) My dad marched with MLK... except he didn't, at all.
2) My ad didn't say McCain's bill was amnesty... except it did, twice
3) I got the endorsement of the NRA... except I didn't
4) I'm a lifelong hunter... well, I went hunting once or twice in the past
5) Mormon's don't believe Jesus will come to the USA... except they do

anyone want to round out the top 10?

For any J-School kids out there - your job is to report the story, not become part of it. Yes I know, Hunter S. is a god. You ain't him.

If they lie, put it in the story. Don't try to call them out in the middle of a televised press conference.

So you advocate letting people telling lies directly to a group of people, as long as it's reported as false later.

I'm sorry. I don't care what profession you're in, but if someone is standing there lying to me, and it's obvious, you have the obligation to call them a liar.

I can't really help out, but Obsidian Wings had an excellent post about him that I think really nails his campaign.

Even Romney doesn't sound like he gives a shiat about what he's talking about in ads like this one.

Well he's been part of Romney's press corps for a while now, so I'm betting he's held his tongue on it MANY times before and decided not to let it slip by this time.

But you're right, I too believe that Romney should be able to stand in front of a crowd of people and tell outright lies, as long as its corrected in an article most people will never read the next day.

Yes, they are. Like the fact there were probably ground rules set up in the first place, that all the journos agreed to before showing up. The most common one is not to interrupt with questions in the middle of a speech.

Or the fact that if we let asshats spout off anytime they want, you'll have more liars called on their bullshiat, but you'll also have good people being drowned out by morons (why does THAT sound so familiar...)

You cannot set up ground rules in a public forum. These faux press conferences are a charade, and I personally applaud this reporter for speaking up during it. The office of President is too important to allow for these type of PR stunts. Just because you create the rules doesn't mean everyone has to follow them. The press has an obligation to search out the truth above all else. Objectivity is a myth, nothing more than a buzzword for journalism program flunkies and people who don't like the content of a news piece. It has never been a principle of journalism, nor is it today. It is an impossible concept, used to discredit reporting that people find unfavorable.
