Is there a prize? There should be a ranking of torturers, so we can have a real goal here. We like competition. Extra points for most creative use of a cattle prod, that sort of thing.

Under "definition of torture" the document lists U.S. interrogation techniques such as forced nudity, isolation, sleep deprivation and blindfolding prisoners.
I have a problem with 1 and 3. 2 is only acceptable under certain conditions (extremely dangerous criminals getting put in solitary I'm fine with, but anyone less than that shouldn't be) and calling 4 torture seems fairly WTFy. I mean, I see no reason why we SHOULD blindfold prisoners, but I don't really see why it's being called torture. Though I guess if you left it on for days at a time or something it would be.

Rev.K [TotalFark] 2008-01-18 12:50:37 AM
So does the list include waterboarding? Because from several sources I've seen, that's not torture.

WorldCitizen [TotalFark] 2008-01-18 12:51:41 AM
Whatever. Do you realize how many times I've been tortured by the voice of Celine Dion?

TheCid: calling 4 torture seems fairly WTFy. I mean, I see no reason why we SHOULD blindfold prisoners, but I don't really see why it's being called torture.

The blindfolds tend to actually be thick black hoods that block out all light and muffle sounds. It is a technique of sensory deprivation. Long periods of sensory deprivation causes disorientation, anxiety and depression... extended periods will trigger hallucinations and it has been known to cause permanent personality disorders.

The practice was abolished by most western nations in the 70's, as an ineffective means of interrogation. Pretty much what they discovered was that after a while the subject starts to lose touch with reality, and any information gained from that point forward becomes highly suspect. The major problem being that it was impossible to determine when that point was reached. Some people can withstand hours even days of sensory deprivation... while others will start experiencing visual and audio aberrations inside of 30 minutes.

And yes, sensory deprivation techniques are considered torture by all western nations, except most recently our own.

We don't torture in our jails ... we outsource it or do it off-site, like good Amerikans.

Result of statement: about the same as a non-binding resolution. Politics as usual."

Politics has truly nothing to do with the belief that people probably shouldn't be needlessly tortured.

h to the 'ojo 2008-01-18 03:42:26 AM
SemperLieSuckah there wants, of his own volition, to be forced to perform sex acts on other men while handcuffed and blindfolded with dirty panties while a fluorescent light bulb tube is shoved up his ass. Because he likes it, he think it shouldn't be against the law to do it to anyone for any reason as determined by the faceless and unaccountable person who does not keep records, or rather keeps no records after the white house destroys the snuff films.

As for executing Japanese officers found guilty of water-boarding, he does not consider them to be humans in the same sense as white christian americans are, and thus no soul -> no sin -> no worries and it is a moot point.

This is the only scenario that is both logical and continuous using SLS's statements as a reference

equal

"forced nudity, isolation, sleep deprivation and blindfolding prisoners.

I never said that that crap didn't go on in Vietnam. But it isn't effective (new window) and it isn't popular, and it ain't winning us any friends. It only hurts the war's cause, and acts as a recruitment tool.

Hell, even Sun Tzu advised turning your captives into your allies, not torturing them.

Choo-Choo Bear 2008-01-18 05:46:27 AM
Mastervader: I never said that that crap didn't go on in Vietnam.

Nope, and your point about it not being effective is correct. However, I was picking on your political partisanship.

If the U.S. is behaving badly, it's not new, and it didn't start with this administration.

If the U.S. is behaving badly, it needs to be fixed, and that occurs by having unity, not through attacks.

If people on both sides didn't have so much mindless hatred for the "other party" and knee-jerk reactions, we might be able to accomplish something.

/Vote Choo in '12.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's a "Conservative" minority, and it has mostly embarrassed itself. The quotes are apropos of them not really knowing what in hell they are.

You're right. (new window) There is no risk in travelling to America. (new window) No chance of an illegal or unreasonable detention in your fine nation. (new window) And since it's not torture if you've got the Stars & Stripes on your sleeve, I'm sure we're all comfortable even if we are selected from an airport line and detained by American security forces for being brown-skinned or non-Christian. It'll be lovely.
