"South Carolina is important, but it may end up that Florida is the gateway this time,"

FL is the gateway? That is such pre-9/11 thinking.

El_Dan 2008-01-18 01:34:03 AM
Because if there's one thing Republican candidates don't need, it's southern voters.

...Did Romney forget what party he's a member of or something?

Romney knows the evDEVILicals have already thrown their weight behind Mike Huckster and that SC has FAIL written all over the place for his campaign.

With Wyoming and Mittchigan under his belt he's content to let this one slide and play the Supa Dupa Tuesday game with his money.

Read an interesting poll the other day that asked folk...

..."How important is your candidates religion to you?"

The biggest group to respond "Very" were Hucksters crowd.
The biggest group to say "Not Very" were Mittens peeps.

Such obedient sheeple, swallowing their sound bytes whole w/o even chewing first.

Recall all Repuglikkkans:

Actually, SC has both Huckabee and Thompson voters. It makes sense for Romney for focus elsewhere. Beat up on Guiliani in Florida and it's done to four legitimate candidates (and whatever Paul is doing on the side).

Unless Fred runs over all of them Huckaberry voters in his l'il red truck he aint got a chance. Well, if he gets Jeri to work a Farking booth just outside a major polling station on election day he might but she'd have to get there early and be there all day.

SC goes to Mike and Barack, well, ...unless ClintCo steals another one through hacking the optiscanners or screwing with the chain of custody.

Poor Freddie. He drove his Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry. It doesn't do to tell Fred Thompson there's nothin' to drink, ya know.

Yeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaaw!

Fred is way behind in the SC polls. Once he losses there he is done.

Huckabee, Romney and McCain are the only candidates with any shot. 9/11s strategy is just too idiotic to work.

Best case scenario: Romney Vs. Obama (Romney will implode like a house of cards)

Worst case: McCain vs. Clinton

zachtp1 2008-01-18 09:02:23 AM
Seems to me to be a decent strategy. He has been getting hit from all sides in SC, and probably wouldn't win it anyway with the huge military vote going to McCain and evangelicals not voting for a Mormon. Let the guys who truly need to win (McCain needs $ - Romney doesn't; Huckabee can't get any vote beyond a hardcore Christian) fight amongst themselves.

I think some of the fightin' lefties here should praise this too, because let's face it, Mitt Romney in a general election looks a lot better than anyone besides Huckabee. Either one of these guys should be an easy win for either Clinton or Obama. But, no group can seize defeat from the jaws of victory quite like the democratic party.

/can't believe a guy like Mitt Romney can actually be a legit candidate for leader of the free world
//pukes in mouth

globalwarmingpraiser [TotalFark] 2008-01-18 09:05:41 AM
Mitt Romney is a highly successful businessman. He is well spoken. He knows how to handle the press. He is the Republicans anti Bush. Unlike Al gore who was the anti-Clinton he can tell a joke.

Free Radical 2008-01-18 09:06:47 AM
I heard an interview with a SC voter this AM.

He wouldn't vote for Romney simply because his religious views differed from his.

Then again a co-worker of mine said she wouldn't vote for anyone who "is unattractive".

This country is farking doomed.

stpickrell 2008-01-18 09:13:41 AM
SC is Edwards' last serious chance at the nomination.

A Hillary victory here may end up being a moment to unite the clans behind Obama.

On the GOP side, it seems McCain, Huckabee, and Thompson are the serious contendahs. Romney has thrown in the sponge, and Nineleveni (I did a Google, no one has used this before) is still doing his poll-a-blow strategy of waiting until FL (although IIRC he did try fairly hard in NH early on.)

McCain can weather a 3rd place finish the best of these three. He still holds a fair bit of appeal

Thompson is done if he finishes third. He has been doing what Nineleveni was doing although SC was supposed to be his breakdown.

Huckabee will be a higher-percentage version of Ron Paul if he doesn't win here. (10-15% of 'true believers' until about the end.) Worrying for Huck is the fact that he lost *among evangelicals* in the Michigan primary. Not sure how the exit polls came out in NH.

Saiga410 2008-01-18 09:26:12 AM
By abandoning the state Romney is kissing off a third(?) of his supporters in that state. What candidate seems to be in the best stance to absorb these people? McCain has it wrapped up but if a large percentage of the Romeney disaffected move to either Huck or Fred it might be a tight ball game. I really do not think A Romoneite would not go to Huck so that leaves either McCain for a supperwin or Fred to make it interesting.

Mosey 2008-01-18 09:31:22 AM
He wouldn't vote for Romney simply because his religious views differed from his.

I know this is Fark where most people think religion is a silly fairy tale, but in most of the country this isn't such a silly concept. Religion tends to hold the moral code people believe in. Would "I wouldn't vote for someone who has a different moral code than me" be a stupid statement? Isn't that what politics and candidates are actually trying to align to you?

If I have a candidate who can fix the economy but is a cannibal I have a problem with his religion too.

FarkOf40000Years 2008-01-18 10:21:52 AM
This is the huge problem facing the GOP this time around. Basically all Republicans fall into one of three categories: evangelicals, businessmen, and people who wanna blow shiat up.

GWB was successful because he was appealling to all three types. This time, there is no such figure.

madmann [TotalFark] 2008-01-18 10:36:03 AM
Mosey: If I have a candidate who can fix the economy but is a cannibal I have a problem with his religion too.

Depends on who he wants to snack on. I can think of enough people who need to be Soylent Green to get him through at least 2 terms. Hell, I'll throw in some bacon!

Good thing there's a candidate out there who is attractive and successful.

If Huckabee wins the nomination, he will be slaughtered like tasty veal. Same with McCain. The drive by's have been calling these two

"conservatives", why is is that the real conservatives can't stand anything from these guys. They are trying to set up the Republican nom for an easy Hilary win.

If either Huckleberry hound or Mr. let all mexicans come on in McCain win the nom...I'm staying home.

Wow, John has really slid this past week. I just hope Huck does not win. He is the only candidate that really has me scared on what they would do to this country.

Why be scared? Living in a Theocracy could be interesting.

Kidding aside, if it's Clinton vs. Huckabee I'll be writing myself in for President.

If it's Clinton v. Huck, Bloomberg will definitely make a run at it and likely win.

If it is that my feet might be swinging a few feet off the ground. I just could not live knowing my country would definitely be going down the tubes.

I've been planning on Superman in this scenario, but I'll change that to Shrugging Atlas if you promise free beer if you win.

fyi to disaffected voters, don't write in ficticious people if you don't want to vote for anyone- they'll refuse to count your ballot. Writing in the secretary of state of your state pretty much assures that they'll count your ballot.
