(Yale Daily News) Stupid To make them more "comfortable," incoming Yale students are given an orientaton guide of their own ethnic group. Next, to make them really comfortable, they're going to give each group their own drinking fountain   (yaledailynews.com) divider line 31

Infinite diversity in infinite combinations has the word combinations. C'mon, people.

Can't we just get along?

Yeah, IDIC is a Star Trek thing ;)

ok, here's a suggestion: stop heeding the advice of every crackpot who can form complete sentences about how simply being in contact with a different ethnic group causes discomfort and tension. it is counterproductive and absurd.

You want people to understand diversity? Quit putting up barriers. In the real world, some people look different. Booga booga!

I think it would be kind of interesting, actually. I need a pamphlet explaining what student activities and special foods we of the honorable French-Canadian ethnicity have been found to love! Otherwise, how else would I know what to do?!

Nevertheless, all the books regardless of ethnic targeting will still contain:

CHAPTER 12: Dealing With The Townies

Mr. Xhin: Freshman have to sit in the back of the bus.

Seniors sit on the sideways seats in the front.
Juniors sit in the facing forward seats in the middle.
Sophomores can either sit in the back or stand in the aisle with the juniors.
Freshmen? They can cling to the sides of the bus.

Yes! Now I've forgotten all about this asinine policy and its liberal foundation/

yeah.. because PC definitely can't be liberal.

That's awesome, their counseling services are like a porn site. "Hmm, I think today I'd like to be counseled by a hairy Asian!"

As someone with a lot of native american and irish ancestry, does that mean they would just hand me a bottle of firewater and point me in the direction of the nearest brawl?

No. You'd live outside the dorms in a teepee and offer you clean, famine-free potatos.

Does anybody believe this outside of an academic setting?

Am I really causing unrest when I'm at the grocery store and I run into some black guy, who is there for the same reason I am? Does my searching the cereal aisle for something tasty-yet-healthy threaten him? Does his choice of coffee mix give me nightmares? Do we necessarily break out into a riot when we pass by the same magazine rack and he picks up his copy of [insert ethnic stereotype about magazine buying] and I opt for Nerdy White Guy Weekly?

I'm just not feeling the hostility. I mean, I was raised in a town that was 95% white, but even I don't worry that every black guy I see is going to rob me. I don't worry that every South Asian guy I see is going to cut my head off. I don't worry that every Asian guy I see is going to attack me with his kung fu. I don't worry that every Hispanic guy is going to get a KO in the 8th round of a featherweight boxing match against me. Whatever. I'm old enough to know that people are all basically the same, and that stereotypes are just cartoon images.

And you know what? It took about five minutes of living in a large, diverse city to learn that.

If you can't learn that ridiculously easy lesson after five minutes in the real world, you seriously need to grow up.

In the 80s, Iranian students living in my apartment complex cooked food in their ovens using charcoal and lighter fluid.

They thought nothing of it.

Yale pulls students from everywhere, this isn't some liberal hand holding it's pragmatic. Just like if you went to school in Saudi Arabia you'd better hope for a guide or a mentor that'll help you keep your extremities attached.

So 30 years ago universities were at the forefront of wiping out concepts of color and race.

Now, 30 years they are leading the charge to bring such concepts back.

WTF????

The school that I used to work for decided that the Native American students need a "hogan" to feel welcome on campus. Without consulting anyone, they put the hogan right in front of the main door of the main buidling on campus. The hogan sits empty because not even drunk indians want the whole school to walk by and stare at them.

/loves it when PC plots go awry.
//oh, did I mention they kicked the Disability Office out to make room for the hogan.

I go to a med school that's got a very small minority population, so as a result, because of our "white school" reputation a lot of talented black and hispanic students will turn us down for other schools. Recently, to counter this the school started having URM student interviews run by URM students. (the student interview has little to do with the actual admissions decision and is more of a Q&A.) If it helps the prospective students realize that they're not going to feel awkward spending four years and a massive amount of $$$ here, it's well worth doing, especially to not lose students because of racial factors.

Obviously recruitment and orientation are different matters, but there's more to this than just PC bullshiat.

El_Dan 2008-01-18 01:03:29 AM
Why would Yale need ethnic counselors? I mean, the students may all be different colors on the outside, but the cocaine coating the inside of their noses is all the same color.

I'm late to the thread but, the US military makes a point of segregating races in certain environments. Specifically, the US military segregates races and skin-tones in extreme hot or extreme cold.

This is due to the fact that a pasty-white guy won't see sunburn or frostbite on a black guy until the damage is already done and vice versa. Your brother of another color won't spot sunburn or frostbite on the pasty-white guy or the Army of Juan until it's too late to prevent damage.

/suppose that doesn't apply to most universities.

Maybe each ethnic groups also needs their own arm band, their own rest rooms and their own dining halls??

I was in the Army for 7 years and never heard any of that BS. I went through cold weather training every time I deployed to the Balkans, which was 3 times. And they never said all the black guys need to stay together and watch each other turn gray. They taught everyone in first aid what to look for pertaining to cold weather injuries. Things must be a lot different now.

It's an Asian robot for blind people. It was covered in the "hairy Asian" orientation group that Paedophile_Deluxe mentioned.
