(Some Guy) Interesting Ten years ago today, a little-known gossip-monger named Matt Drudge posted a rumor about some Presidential intern on his fledging "Web" site. The rest, as they say, is history   (newsbusters.org) divider line 43

Thank God for Drudge, or this travesty of justice, this very crime against the American people and the Constitution, would have gone un-noticed.

ha. Clinton got a BLOWJOB.

Actually he was being investigated for 12 counts of sexual assault and harrassment, and documenting a history of affairs with subordinates is deemed relevant evidence in trial. Somehow that part is usually skipped over.

Tell me, what did the judge in the case think about the relevance of the Lewinsky matter? Somehow you seem to have skipped over that part.

I mean the case is said and done, so instead of speculating about its relevance why not just state if it was considered relevant or not? What possible reason could there be to leave out that information and include speculation instead?

And so was born one of the major facts that proves media political bias.

Does anyone think Newsweek would spike that story if it was Bush?

I also remember the media going after Newt Gingrich shortly there after and dragging independent prosecuter Ken Starr through the mud.

I love how a decade later, Drudge is still lambasted by the 'angry left'. Isn't that how MoveOn.org was started in the first place? To 'move on' past the impeachment?

You know, it was because of the Monica Lewinsky ordeal that we even have Hillary Clinton as a contender for the presidency today; the Republicans were involved in a witch hunt which she characterized as the 'vast, right-wing conspiracy'. Well, groups on the left (such as MoveOn) caught on and started becoming incredibly angry at the 'right wing' conspirators. Some might say that the only reason she even became a senator was because the liberal state of New York wanted to 'stick it' to the Republicans and were more than happy to invite her in as a carpetbagger. Now, she's lining herself up to make a serious presidential run where chances are she could win.

Wouldn't that be just desserts though? Republicans grasp straws to attack a political enemy and end up losing the presidency to that man's wife because of it. My, the webs we weave...

Oh, the special investigation into the Clintons started almost as soon as Bill took office, into alleged real estate improprities and sexual harassment and so forth. So they'd been going on a good four years at the point when this particular scandal broke. The Clinton presidency was basically wall-to-wall scandals, some real, some manufactured. Monicagate was just the climax, if you will.

As would most Americans. On one hand, thank god the President can only serve two terms or we might never be rid of Bush. On the other hand, if the limit wasn't there we still might have Clinton.

Since polling started, Clinton is one of only two Presidents that ended their term with higher approval ratings than when they started. FDR was the other one.

You have to be seriously farked up to have nostalgic feelings for the Clinton impeachment. It made everyone involved look like an asshole, and destroyed any respect my generation might have had for the office of president. And for what? So Republicans could score some temporary political points?

What a crock of shiat. If Drudge had been hit by a bus the day before posting that story, the world would be a better place right now.

Drudge was already a pretty big deal by that point. He may not have been a household name in middle America, but if you used the internet on a daily basis, you were probably checking Drudge's website occassionally by then.

I remember when the story hit his site - it caused a monumental stir (as you might imagine) on Free Republic. In my opinion, it was incredibly important because it was the first time I can remember that at least 50% of the country (the internet using public) knew about a major news story, but the mainstream media stuck their fingers in their ears and went "la, la, la, la, la ... we can't hear you" and just pretended it didn't exist. The mainstream media had ignored major stories in the past (FDR's health, JFK's sleeping around, etc), but this was the first time the general public just went right around them and reported the story to itself (via the internet).

NBC, ABC, CBS, The New York Times, the Washington Post, Time and Newsweek probably lost half their influence overnight.

Freerepublic?

http://www.freerepublic.com/home.htm :

Welcome to Free Republic!
Free Republic is the premier online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America. And we always have fun doing it. Hoo-yah!

Sounds like a plan.

Just to clarify, the previous post was the response I got on a different site when I accused someone of being a Freeper, word for word.

Apparently, I hit a nerve, I don't know.
