He didn't know Obama was Christian? Why on earth should we believe his whole POW thing?

I think Admiral Stockdale's senility rubbed off on him.

Do you think this is a spoof? Aren't the comments about the clever Chinee a little too much like Mr. Burns? Or maybe I've just forgotten how truly insane Ross is.

Diogenes: I think Admiral Stockdale's senility rubbed off on him.

That wasn't senility. That was the aftereffects of Viet Cong hospitality. I quote Dennis Miller (back when he had his mojo):

"The reason he had to turn his hearing aid on at that debate is because those f***ing animals knocked his eardrums out when he wouldn't spill his guts. He teaches philosophy at Stanford University, he's a brilliant, sensitive, courageous man. And yet he committed the one unpardonable sin in our culture: he was bad on television.

Somewhere out there Paddy Chayefsky must be laughing his ass off. ..."

More here and here.

Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while senior naval officer in the Prisoner of War camps of North Vietnam. Recognized by his captors as the leader in the Prisoners' of War resistance to interrogation and in their refusal to participate in propaganda exploitation, Rear Adm. Stockdale was singled out for interrogation and attendant torture after he was detected in a covert communications attempt. Sensing the start of another purge, and aware that his earlier efforts at self-disfiguration to dissuade his captors from exploiting him for propaganda purposes had resulted in cruel and agonizing punishment, Rear Adm. Stockdale resolved to make himself a symbol of resistance regardless of personal sacrifice. He deliberately inflicted a near-mortal wound to his person in order to convince his captors of his willingness to give up his life rather than capitulate. He was subsequently discovered and revived by the North Vietnamese who, convinced of his indomitable spirit, abated in their employment of excessive harassment and torture toward all of the Prisoners of War. By his heroic action, at great peril to himself, he earned the everlasting gratitude of his fellow prisoners and of his country. Rear Adm. Stockdale's valiant leadership and extraordinary courage in a hostile environment sustain and enhance the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Stockdale had balls so big he left a trench in the sidewalk every time he went for a walk, and Dan Quayle and Al Gore weren't fit to be in the same auditorium with Stockdale, let alone on the same stage.

Snark cheerfully rescinded.

It would be interesting then to see what Stockdale's opinion on the McCain/POW thing is.

He's not insane. He's just a typical old man of very rural roots. Just so happens he managed to distinguish himself in many areas without particularly broadening his mind.

I do not for a minute think he is a bad person. Even his comments about gays I think comes from not realizing he probably knows quite a few.

He did enough good with his life to have earned a little leeway with opinions that were instilled in him growing up in Texarkana.

Corvus 2008-01-17 02:44:59 PM
When I asked about Barack Obama, Perot said he admired his eloquence but thought it "a little odd that we would be less concerned about his background than being a Mormon." Perot was pleasantly surprised when I told him that Obama was a Christian, not a Muslim, and relieved when I informed him that the e-mail Perot (and untold others) received about Obama not respecting the Pledge of Allegiance was a fraud.

Thank God we didn't vote this dingbat in office. I was almost thinking about voting for him until he said we should declare marshal law in cities with drug problems and do house to house searches.

If you're a nut, sooner or later it slips out.

Yeah he is your nutty conspiracy theory uncle. Reminds me kind of Ron Paul too.

Perot might be a little nuts but he was right about NAFTA and a lot of the other things he said when he ran for office.

He was. I agree. But some of his other things was just coo-coo for cocoa puffs. I would rather vote for someone who is somewhat wrong on 50% of the issues over someone who is mostly right but insane on 10% of the issues. And that is true for most people. That's why the main candidates are usually so boring.

It's why Ron Paul and Huckabee have no chance of winning.

I agree. But I think the media does a diservice when they label these peole as nuts because any points they make worth considering get ignored as well. Most voters are smart enough to recognize who is a little to nuts to be president but makes points worth considering. Ron Paul makes some great points about our foreign poliy that not even the Dems are willing to talk about. Huckabee, while I think he's a loon, does call the Republicans to look out for the little guy as much as they do Wal Street. All of these are good for the debate about issues. In the end I don't think either of them will win but like Perot I think they will have some effect beyond this election. Clinton would have never balanced the budget if Perot had not brought it up.

Most open minded people understand that a broken clock is right twice a day. That is one of my main benchmarks to use if someone is just a brain washed zealot on a subject or not. Brain washed zealots will deny every point against their argument no matter how trivial it is to prove their argument or support their candidate.

Like the defense of Ron Paul and earmarks. Many of his supporters are now saying how wonderful earmarks are now. I Doubt they were saying this before Ron Paul was caught doing it.

My last memory is when Al Gore schooled him on Larry King.

I'm surprised I knew so little about Stockdale's record. I wasn't exactly politically aware in 1992 so all I got out of it was "Stockdale = senile old man". Thank god people like Dennis Miller set the record straight in the entertainment world. No offense to Phil Hartman and the mid 90s SNL writing staff, both of which were excellent, but the Admiral didn't deserve that.

My parents voted Perot. My mom swears she'll never vote third party again, because it cost Bush the election (in most people's eyes anyway).

I remember Perot's TV ads about the national debt with the charts and graphs. I said "Why the heck don't the other candidates go into this much detail? They just talk about how great they are gonna be, they never talk about what needs to be done and how to do it". Now Perot is made fun of for the charts and graphs, but I dunno, I'm still waiting for a candidate with that kind of specific depth.

By now, it should be standard practice for the wonky stuff you're looking for to show up on a candidate's website - and if you still can't find what you're looking for after looking there, chances are the candidate is just throwing pretty lies at you and when the chips are down will go with whatever gets him re-elected.

This is very true. See: Fred Thompson's 15 minute pre-Iowa video on Youtube. It's why I'm still a fan of Fred, even though his campaign is awful and he has no chance. Still, I wish the candidates would at least list their policies and promises in the ads, not just alarmist fearmongering (Giuliani), populist aww shucks platitudes (Huckabee), snoring (Thompson), and so on.

Nestea Plunge: Any good pie charts or scatter graphs?

Coming soon to an internets near you...

The pint-size Texan with the funny voice and the big ears isn't planning to run for president again, but says he will launch a Web site next month with plenty of the charts and graphs he made famous when explaining the deficit in 1992.

You kids were probably still getting communism poured into your skulls via Sesame Street when Ross Perot was doing his chart talks on television. They were great. Hilarious.

"Ya see, the economy is like the crazy aunt in the attic."

Stuff like that. In that wonderful nasal whine of his. I really miss those broadcasts.

The one positive with Perot would have been that he is a businessman, and a VERY good businessman. He is one of the few presidential candidates that would be able to help the economy with intelligent decisions. Like trying to pay off our debt to foreign governments. People, you DO NOT WANT foreign governments owning US debt, and the fact our banks are now taking loans from foreign companies makes me a little scared. I hate theories where they forecast the worst possible Armageddon, but I see this all coming back to bite us in the ass in a very serious way. I don't think any of the candidates R or D really have any idea how to fix the mess they are walking into. Our only hope is that they appoint intelligent, impartial people into the important positions and Congress can pull the lobbyists hands out of their pants for long enough to pull us out.

/In other words we are seriously farked in the anus hole.

I kind of don't believe the part about Bush's people threatening Perot's family. For one thing, he and his family have the stones to say "try it" and the money to secure themselves fairly well. MOre than that though, his contacts in the military probably think more highly of him than they do of Bush and the exact opposite would have been more likely - except Perot was never the sleaze ball that the Bush family is.

On what do you base your statement about NAFTA? Everything I've read makes Perot look like a particular idiot on that subject.
