Folks like this guy are the reason all of the rational voices in the legalization debate are casually dismissed, along with the clear and convincing evidence that supports their arguments.

Hero my ass.

Isn't Salem near where they do a lot of lead mining? It may not just be the Ozark ditchweed that has farked with his reality.

Hey, this guy isn't all too bad, when it comes to Missouri Libertarians.

The MO-LP had to have contested primaries for Governor in 1996, 2000, and 2004. In 2000 and 2004, the MO-LP primary was won by John Swenson who is some guy who didn't quite campaign too often.

In 1996, the MO-LP aligned to make sure that their nomination for Governor didn't go to Martin Lindstedt (who is a white supremacist, and who is currently in trouble for touching young boys, IIRC).

Sounds like 2008 will have a contested LP primary which may prevent a Dubie v. Blunt matchup.

mmb1978 2008-01-17 02:04:01 PM

Great. He will syphon off Democrat votes. Good news for Blunt.

Huzzah!

We are in serious trouble in this country, when nut-cases like this get a forum.

RobbieFal 2008-01-17 02:08:26 PM
MO-LP drama

I guess I'm a little dense -- I didn't see the value of having our state chair slag his own party's ticket in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, or of having our candidate for lieutenant governor endorse his party's ticket's opponent for governor in 2004, either.

(IOW, MO-LP Lt. Governor candidate Mike Ferguson endorsed Matt Blunt for Governor over John Swenson)

The main drama is the possibility of the MO-LP refusing Wana Dubie's filing fee, an option recently used by all three parties against White Supremacist Glenn Miller in 2006. Eventually that option will get a party sued and they will probably lose.

Democrats rarely vote Libertarian.

unremarkable asterisk [TotalFark] 2008-01-17 02:13:24 PM
Chief Wana Dubie vs Blunt (new window)? Tough call.

RobbieFal 2008-01-17 02:14:24 PM
Democrats usually vote Libertarian as a protest vote. Check the results, Libertarians get around 1 to 2 percent no matter what in Missouri.

Anyways, the Democrats who will be voting for Dubie are the ones who voted for Blunt because his name is Blunt and they are potheads. (kiddingkidding)

And re: John Swenson.

When interviewed at his home, a sparsely decorated trailer set on a gravel-strewn lot between a busy state highway and a rock quarry, Swenson promised to repeal the state income tax and restore the gold standard.

Don't ask how the Governor of Missouri can restore the gold standard.

"I don't exactly know how to put it into words, but the government should stay the hell out of our business," Swenson said.

Eh, that's probably direct enough.

I love Mongo! He lives down the street from my grandfather (near Colonial and Park). When my parents lived in Memphis in the '70s, they used to hang out at his pizza place.

I grew up between Memphis and New Jersey, and was frightened of Mongo as a kid. I remember during the 1991 mayoral election seeing him on public access TV and having nightmares about him becoming mayor.

Having had extensive contact with 3rd parties in this state I feel assured in saying that the Libertarian protest vote comes largely from disaffected Republicans. The Democrat protest vote is much more likely to go Green/Nader/Progressive.

The MO-LP has had ballot access for most of the last 20 years, and the Greens had ballot access in 2000 and maybe 2002, IIRC. The Progressives (aka Greens who had to pick a new name) had access in 2006 (and I don't know if they'll have it in 2008).

I did overlook the disaffected Republican vote for the LP.

1988: Mike Roberts gets 1.03% in a three-way race (where Ashcroft easily defeats Betty Hearnes)
1996: Mark Oglesby gets 2.40% in a three way race (where Carnahan easily defeats Margaret Kelly)
2000: Swenson gets 0.49% in a seven-way race (with the Greens, Reform, and CP on the ballot).
2004: Swenson gets 0.9% in a four-way race (with the CP on the ballot)

Gilmour got 2.25% and Lydia Lewis got 0.86% in the 2006 Senate race. Another LP candidate got 4.58% in 1994 (Ashcroft crushes Wheat).

I would guess that Democrats were likely to vote for Roberts over Hearnes and Johnson over Wheat.

So maybe a better way to put this is "the less the competitive the race is, the higher the LP percentage is"

Maybe. The majority of my family is from Salem. My grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles. My parents moved closer to St Louis a long time ago. I tend to avoid visiting Salem when at all possible.

I probably know them. What family names should I be thinking about?

As for not going back to Salem, the Chief and farkers like him are why I always hated to go back. The best part about my mom dying in '05 is that I don't have to go back anymore!

Emory/Birdsong are the main. Others tied into it are Nash and maybe Camden (kinda).

BioGuy741 2008-01-17 03:01:30 PM
I knew an Aubrey Birdsong. Also know a Mike Camden and a Justin Nash. All are about 25-27 years old. Did I hit one?

Y2Jericho 2008-01-17 03:03:52 PM
Yeah, related to two of the them. Both are cousins. I don't really know Audbrey or portion of the Birdsongs that well. They never came around when I was growing up.

I know Michael very well. We're the same age and used to live close to each other when we were younger.

....wow. Ok, just to clarify, this Mike Camden, does he happen to go by the nickname Gopher?

Y2Jericho 2008-01-17 03:07:33 PM
yup, and he has a brother. His mom died a year ago two days before Christmas. His (our) grandma died last month. Yup, it's the same guy.
