Meh. Not so sad, really, I saw them in 1997, and apparently they might be touring AGAIN.

Glen Matlock instead of Sid, of course.

TommyymmoT [TotalFark] 2008-01-14 03:58:40 AM
Wow, Sid's left arm was so wrecked up that he had to have a big piece of gauze over it.

He was dead within a year.

Here we go again... ok I'll have an extra big coffee this morning so's I'm ready for the usual suspects and their "boy band" BS:

/ assumes reactionary position
// no not that one.

Oh I will also say this was apparently one of their worst performances ever, lacking the energy and intensity that typified their shows. It's a shame it is the one that has the best quality audio and video, and is the one most people know.

Adman12 [TotalFark] 2008-01-14 07:31:22 AM
Yeah... I feel cheated. The farker wouldn't download all the way.

*sip* ahhh

Lemme take my seat beside you for the baa baa's of the "boy band accusing" sheeple. Oh yeah, did you clock in? No? We'll fix the time cards later. OK, let's begin...

Like Rotten says in his biography the Pistols failed at every "big" gig they had to play. The Winterland was no different.

/Freakin' brilliant band
//Buy "No Future UK" to hear what they should have sounded like.

PUNK's quintessential moment right there...

I love Rotten's glaring eyes staring down the audience.

Hard to argue with that one.

Someone had to be Warhol.
Someone had to be the Pistols.

In any genre, someone comes in, tells the status quo (with a bit of tongue in cheek) to shove it, and then takes a bunch of crap for it.

//maybe they were Captain and Tennille

Brace yourself for all of the delusional fools that will tout this as an amazing band, when all they really were where 2 bit fashion icons, marketed for profit. I wont use the term boy band, because that would imply some type of musical talent, something there were devoid of.

Two most over-rated bands ever.

I think this sounds pretty good. I'm not much of a pistols fan, but I'll take them over just about anything now.

I think Jones and Matlock went down to Brazil right after this show to do some movie with the Great Train Robber.

I actually read Rotten's autobiography and he evokes the disappointment he was feeling the day after this show perfectly...I think Rotten really wanted to be respected as an artist. The more successful the Pistols got the less respect they had.

A great band, but as this thread clearly shows, overrated. There's absolutely no reason anyone should form a makeshift militia on a news website to counter other people's opinions about the band. When I read the Weeners about making a big pot of coffee and getting ready to counter people with harsh opinions of the pistols, all I could think was, "Wow, that's about the lamest thing I've read all day".

You do, however, need certain baseline skills...tuning the goddamn instruments for starters. In the studio, they have the producer to thank for that.

Live...ugh. All the bootlegs of them I have heard are abysmal. Rubbish. I like the one album, though.

Well that's because you can't read.

It's not about "harsh opinions". What always happens in these Pistols threads is that people contend that they were a boy band "created" by Malcolm McLaren. Factually, that is not true, and that is what I often refute, with facts.

If you don't like them, hey, I am totally cool with that! I hate lots of music that is very popular. No one likes everything.

I really hope this reply wasn't directed at me. I don't feel like replying to someone who calls my opinion of the Sex Pistols lacking in objectivity.

Also, I have no problem with you defending your opinion. However, if someone says the Pistols are overrated, it's pretty stupid to point out that all their albums were rated very highly. That's pretty much why people called them overrated. Not calling you stupid, but it was a futile effort to counter that they were "overrated".

Also, nice Pump Up the Volume reference.

I'm curious to know which ones... I have only a few, and most of them sound pretty good.

If you're gonna blame bands for being out of tune onstage, well that sword is gonna cut a wide swatch, starting with Chuck Berry, then George Harrison, and the Stones of course, and geez Jimmy Page half the time even...

Musically, if you listen: Glen Matlock is a very fine rock bass player, Paul Cook a solid if unflashy timekeeper, and Steve Jones, while only knowing 5th chords, was an exceptional rhythym gutarist. Bill Price, the engineer on NMTB, called Steve "the tightest guitarist ever" -- meaning his multiple guitar tracks were all in synch. Doesn't make him a virtuoso, must certainly better than many.

And try playing the lick to "EMI".

Pontus and the Nail Drivers 2008-01-14 12:32:15 PM
The Dynamite Monkey: .

I'm a professional musician, so yeah, that's about as hard as tying my shoes. Don't get me wrong though, I LOVE "Bullocks". "Problems" is one of the great rockers of all time.

Then you must be getting an kick out of these replies.

Again, I didn't say it was virtuoso, just not incompetent, as they are often labeled.

First, I'd like to contend factually that you can't read. Look at the first 3 words of my reply for reference. Therefore, when you said, "If you don't like them, hey, I am totally cool with that!", it was entirely unnecessary and I hope it was out of habit rather than stupidity.

I'd then like to then apologize for 2 things, 1 really: Firstly, I don't spend enough time in Sex Pistols threads to know their tendencies. Second, I don't spend enough time on Fark to know the filters.

And I love my login name, I really don't care what you think. Most people say it's lame, but that's total BS. Factually, it's awesome, and it's awesome squared.

*sniff sniff* what is that smell... I think it is desperation... someone desperately trying to hold onto their fantasies and delusions about the pistols being a good band. Their are no definitions to define what is or is not a "good band" though one could argue that without any other criterion, talent and musical ability would be one criteria that most musicians share. All musicians have to be able to play or make music. Now that is not implying that everyone needs to be a virtuoso, merely competent for the style that they play. Hundreds if not thousands of bands were able to play three chords better then the sex pistols. They lacked any sense of creativity, meaningful emotion or overall musical style. Not to mention that their commercialism destroyed any sense of integrity they were trying to achieve with the "we play bad, but we really have emotion" angle that they were going for. The velvet underground couldn't really play their instruments, but they at least used the sound to define and create a style. The sex pistols, not so much.

kungfu jesus with a side of lime: *sniff sniff* what is that smell... I think it is desperation... someone desperately trying to hold onto their fantasies and delusions about the pistols being a good band.

The term "good band" is completely subjective and can't be argued eiter way.... which you state in the second sentence of this post, which makes your first sentence odd.

kungfu jesus with a side of lime: All musicians have to be able to play or make music. Now that is not implying that everyone needs to be a virtuoso, merely competent for the style that they play. Hundreds if not thousands of bands were able to play three chords better then the sex pistols.

"Better" is also totally subjective. Certainly the Pistols were very competent at their style.

kungfu jesus with a side of lime: They lacked any sense of creativity, meaningful emotion or overall musical style.

Wow... I think the many people who know they almost single handedly launched a musical movement in the UK might disagree with you on this one.

kungfu jesus with a side of lime: Not to mention that their commercialism destroyed any sense of integrity they were trying to achieve with the "we play bad, but we really have emotion" angle that they were going for.

If by "commercialism" you mean "trying to sabotage our careers in every possible way at every possible moment" then I understand. And the Winterland show linked above was the last on a tour where they passed up big bucks in cities like NYC and LA to play smaller honky tonks in the south... to make an artistic statement. I admit a stupid artistic statement, but an non-commerical one nonetheless.

kungfu jesus with a side of lime: The velvet underground couldn't really play their instruments, but they at least used the sound to define and create a style.

You don't understand the Velvets much either. Mo couldn't play her drums much, but John Cale was a classically trained musician and a former child prodigy, and Lou played piano and guitar well enough to make a living as a professional songwriter before the Velvets.

And you still haven't explained why you feel they have no "talent".

But someone else's opinion somehow adds objectivity? Maybe, just maybe, you should look words up before you use them there, genius.

Also, the Sex Pistols were not that great a band. Why? They barely knew what they were doing. They're proof that you can throw yourself into a performance (or, at least, 25% of the band can throw himself into the performance. Thanks Johnny!), and it will convey enough intensity that people will like it. And that's fine. Truly. But claiming that everyone who doesn't like them is somehow lying is kind of dumb.

Oh, and "credible" rock criticism doesn't actully exist. Entertaining, agreeable rock criticism, sure. But objective creditibilty? No such thing, friend.

Anyway, happy hating, haters!

HappyHarryHardOn [TotalFark] 2008-01-14 01:37:15 PM
ok JESUS ill bite :

While mostly accurate, dismissing Never Mind the Bollocks as merely a series of loud, ragged midtempo rockers with a harsh, grating vocalist and not much melody would be a terrible error. Already anthemic songs are rendered positively transcendent by Johnny Rotten's rabid, foaming delivery. His bitterly sarcastic attacks on pretentious affectation and the very foundations of British society were all carried out in the most confrontational, impolite manner possible. Most imitators of the Pistols' angry nihilism missed the point: underneath the shock tactics and theatrical negativity were social critiques carefully designed for maximum impact. Never Mind the Bollocks perfectly articulated the frustration, rage, and dissatisfaction of the British working class with the establishment, a spirit quick to translate itself to strictly rock & roll terms. The Pistols paved the way for countless other bands to make similarly rebellious statements, but arguably none were as daring or effective. It's easy to see how the band's roaring energy, overwhelmingly snotty attitude, and Rotten's furious ranting sparked a musical revolution, and those qualities haven't diminished one bit over time. Never Mind the Bollocks is simply one of the greatest, most inspiring rock records of all time.

The Dynamite Monkey 2008-01-14 01:39:36 PM
kungfu jesus with a side of lime: I am waiting for someone to define what their particular talent is. Making an artistic statment is not the same thing as making music.

First: "control F:talent" indicates you are the first one to mention that word, so I would submit that the onus is on you.

Second: It's Rock and Roll, pal, and as Louis Armstrong said about jazz: "If you gotta ask, you'll never know".
