The guy froze to death while smoking? That has a ring of irony to it.

My guess is that they banned him thinking that he wouldn't be retarded enough to go outside and smoke, thus that he would be forced to cut back. Unfortunately they thought wrong.

Unless it was a free nursing home.

I work at a nursing/assisted living facility right now, and the entire facility is nonsmoking because of oxygen tanks. Only one resident I know of smokes, and the aides cheerfully wheel her out a few times a day to the smoking area (a good twenty feet from the building exit) so she can smoke and hang out with the smoking employees (which include most of the nurses, figure that shiat out).

/nursing homes ban smoking because of the fire hazard
//and the oxygen go boom hazard just adds some flare to it all

Norad [TotalFark] 2008-01-13 08:43:09 PM
Don't worry about smoking. It's just one of the many human vices that the government is slowly eliminating to protect us from ourselves.

When smoking is banned, then the same strategy will be employed against alcohol, and that ban oughta happen in a hurry, because of the proven dangers of drunk-drivers on America's roads.

After that? Food. Nothing that exceeds a certain fat or cholesterol limit will be sold to any American, which will save millions in health care. No, it really will, along with the cigarette prohibition. I have a mental bet that 2010 will be the cigarette year, with 2015 being the food regulation. The alcohol? I dunno, maybe 2018. Alcohol regulation will be the one that sparks all the riots.

Do I sound crazy? Yeah, I wish I did too.

tomhath 2008-01-13 08:44:08 PM
Probably only a couple of chairs in the smoking room and he was monopolizing one of them. But outside smoking for 3 1/2 hours in -20C weather? That's almost a Darwin candidate.

Mister Tibbs 2008-01-13 08:44:14 PM
Hey, he didn't die of lung cancer!

7of7 - Addictions make you stupid. The need for nicotine made 20 degree January seem like a decent place to have a smoke. I just wonder why he didn't come inside.

Also - whats the point in getting a geriatric, life-long smoker to cut back? Isn't that just mean? I mean, he has come so far and never quit. Whats the use now? The damage is done. They should of let him smoke in peace until he croaked. Smoking a few less cigarettes a day for the final month's of one's life is just gonna made a man cranky. Crankier. Whatever.

goneja 2008-01-13 08:44:26 PM
Not a single person was at the front door at all that day? I'd think no matter how stupid you are, or how much alzheimer's you have, you'd realize after 5 seconds that -20 Celcius (!!!!) is COLD AS ALL GOD DAMN HELL AND NOT WORTH THE CIGARETTE.

One of the buildings I worked in had a smoking room. Many smokers preferred to stand outside and smoke, even if it was cold. The smokers' biggest complaint about the smoking room was it stunk of smoke. A few hardcore smokers liked it and could take a half-hour break in there.

/go figure

Rozinante 2008-01-13 08:55:29 PM
Ever been in the smoking room in a nursing home? It's a white wall. People smoking though trach tubes, people who have to turn off their oxygen to get in. You don't even need to buy to get your fix.

rabidarmadillo24 2008-01-13 08:57:11 PM
So this guy died doing something he loved while he was hanging out in God's waiting room. Sounds good to me.

farkinkewt 2008-01-13 08:59:21 PM
You would think that when the staff didn't see this this guy after an hour, someone would have checked on him. That is the responsibility of the staff whether the guy was outside smoking or doing what ever it is old people do. So what that he was smoking, he was old what else was he going to do?

///whatever

My grandma died in 2006 at a nursing home whilst smoking. They usually had someone with her when she was smoking outside but on this particular day they didn't. The ash from her smoke set her hospital gown (which was made out of something VERY flammable - little did we know) on fire and she went up in flames. That was not a fun week...

tomhath: That's almost a Darwin candidate.

An old smoker living in a nursing home is not on the candidates list. You however...

Cornwell [TotalFark] 2008-01-13 09:05:27 PM
Sammy Jenkins: Hey idiot, it sounds like you're confusing a nursing home with a prison.

This guy killed himself. Plain and simple. The truth is, he shouldn't have been smoking at all. And if his family gave a shiat about whether he lived or died, they would have made him quit.

Oh yes, the thing smugger than a Mac-user, a farking health-freak.

The man died due to gross negligence from the staff, while using a legal substance. Not noticing that a patient goes missing for 3 1/2 hours = negligence, simple as that.

nativefloridian 2008-01-13 09:05:50 PM
wxboy: The guy froze to death while smoking? That has a ring of irony to it.

I recall a story about a smoker who had a tree drop on him as he was outside smoking. In a hurricane.

Fern Crest 2008-01-13 09:08:06 PM
My father died last month ... he was in a nursing home, and he smoked. Hell, smoking is likely the cause of his heart attack and stroke that put him in the nursing home in the first place.

Yes, it's true that the 'Smoking Room' was four white walls, a huge overhead smoke-eater fan, and a window. Absolutely cheerless.

As for the gentleman (who was part of The Greatest Generation, btw) who froze outside ... It is nearly impossible for a fit person to open an institutional-style door while sitting in a wheelchair. I don't think it was his fault that he likely couldn't open the door to get back inside.

Three hours and no one checked on him? That's where the fault is.

Perhaps they smoke while in a nursing home because it's the only way out.

RealFarknMcCoy2 2008-01-13 09:10:45 PM
An addiction that causes you to go outside in -20-degree weather? That's one helluva drug. He's better off dead, IMHO.

Wow, have you ever thought about volunteering some time at a nursing home sharing all of your worldly experience and explaining what the "truth" is to all the old crinkly smokers there? They would have a pet name for you in no time, maybe something like idiot.

Philip J. Fry [TotalFark] 2008-01-13 09:16:37 PM
You don't move into a nursing home because you plan on living another 30 years.

SweetSilverBlues 2008-01-13 09:17:28 PM
Sammy Jenkins: You're right, they should just lock all of them in farking cages at night. This drug addict died because he was a drug addict. And if his family gave a shiat about him, they would have gotten him help for his addiction.

3/10

Need to work on your subtlety.

Howser 2008-01-13 09:18:44 PM
I wonder if they took his cigarettes from his cold, dead hands ?

Yes, because the highly informative article, in it's expanse, clearly states that he did sneak out in the middle of the night, disabling the security system and killing two nurses who tried to stop him.

You are writing this on a Mac, aren't you?

C-J 2008-01-13 09:21:47 PM
On the bright side, he won't have to deal with the -30C weather we're going to have next week.

Manberg 2008-01-13 09:22:31 PM
So, no one noticed he was gone for 3 1/2 hours? I mean, I'm all for letting them have their freedoms, but in a place filled with dementia patients, Alzheimer's patients and such, you would at least think they'd have someone watch the door's and such. Negligent staff is to blame here.

/nicotine is a helluva drug
//don't smoke unless at a party or something, then it's only maybe 2-3 a month max.

maxgatorfan 2008-01-13 09:26:48 PM
He probably went out side to smoke in peace away from all
the pillow biters who were complaining. At 74 he deserved to smoke if he wanted to.It is assinine to try and get him to cut back what
so he could live another 5 or 10 years in a home no thanks.
I really like how all you smoking nazis refuse to mind your own business.
