read: "For many celebrities, the lure of hormonal drugs is their supposed, unproven effects...will aid healing, enhance looks, strength and speed, or slow aging."

and that was on the first page

first page, fourth paragraph:

"Still, medical experts say that use of steroids and human growth hormone -- an estimated $10 billion-a-year operation worldwide -- reaching into the entertainment industry illustrates how pervasive steroids use in the United States has become. It is not unique to athletics, where performance-enhancing drug use has marred many sports. For many celebrities, the lure of hormonal drugs is their supposed, unproven anti-aging effects."

The article doesn't say why. It's not for "anti-aging" effects. It's to get buff and look cool.

Look at Dr. Dre. He is suddenly the Hulk. 50 cent's abs are probably roid produced, and remember when Eminem got (sort of) buff all of a sudden after being a skinny little dork?

I can't explain Mary J. Blige, except that she used to be a crackhead or something and will try anything probably. Maybe she's the one thinks the anti-aging effects are true. Or maybe she got the prescription for the others.

This gives the youth of America unrealistic expectations and body image disorders!

If kids assume it takes a small period of time to get buff, and then they can't, then they'll go emo and cut themselves.

Won't someone think of the children?!?

There are two things Americans can't get enough of: witch hunts and seeing 'heroes' (celebrities, basically) fall from grace. Understand that, and American culture makes a lot more sense, or at least appears less erratic.

all drugs should be legal and the government should collect the taxes off their sale. That solves the Universal Health Care problem.

I would agree, except I think there needs to be an extra classification for certain substances that exceed the threshold of recreational-medical benefits/individual-societal cost. Meth and Crack are good examples. These should be regulated far more than something like pot. I'm an ardent opponent of the drug war, but crack being available at the corner store is just asking for trouble.

What is most shameful isn't that some drugs are illegal, it's the punishment. The concept of sending someone to prison for putting a substance in their body or simply possessing a substance (that isn't to be used as a weapon) really gets to me. I don't see the point in doing that, and it reveals that society may inherently lacks compassion or just doesn't believe in the concept of somatic liberty.
