After viewing two or three minutes of a Vivid video, I certainly wouldn't want to buy their schlock.

Actually, I don't need to watch at all. Vivid is the most formulaic, unexciting crap out there. The MacDonalds of porn, if you will.

FTFA: "Two or three minutes -- that's all you need," Hirsch says. "After watching two or three minutes of hard-core sex, you're not going to go and buy the full movie."

If all you need is two or three (or five or ten) minutes, why bother filming the rest?

Perhaps making actual movies instead of just stringing together assorted sex scenes would help.

That's one thing. I don't want 'em showing up, sitting down, jacking off and splitting on the story. I don't want to make that film. I wanna make the thing that keeps 'em around even after they've come... what happens when you come? You're done, you wanna split. My idea, my goal: Suck 'em in with the story... they'll squirt their load and sit in it... just to see how the story ends. Sometimes we make these films, we wanna make people laugh a little, then get into it and fark heavy: That's good and that's fine. But I got a dream of making a film that's true... true and right and dramatic.

Wait a minute, Jack. I'm not a complicated man. I like cinema. In particular, I like to see farking on film. I don't want to win an Oscar and I don't want to re-invent the wheel -- I enjoy simple pleasures like butter in my a** and lollipops in my mouth.
That's me -- call me crazy, call me a pervert, but this is something I enjoy. One other small thing I want to do in this life is make a dollar and a cent in this business

Maybe if they made erotic films that were actually EROTIC, then people would pay for them. Y'know, instead of pink plastic people babbling bizarrely over-sexual lines with all the acting talent of a rock.

fark mainstream porn.

Who even watches Vivid's crap?

"Plots," performers over 20 years old, fake boobs, etc . . . .

That's "Old Porn" as Rumsfield might have said.

Besides, there's about eleventy billion sites where ALL PEOPLE DO is rip and post copyrighted porn.

How could they ever possibly stop anything more than 0.00001% of them?

What I'd like to know is why so many "internet porn stars" don't offer their product for sale on DVDs?

It would be nice to beat off in bed or on the couch once in a while instead of at the desk . . . .

/Just sayin.

Anyway, amateur stiff is soooooooooooo superior.

Paying for porn makes about as much sense as paying for air, or gravity.

This is pretty much it right here. I'll be honest, I used to own a lot of tapes from Vivid, but nowadays I don't think I could rub one out to that crap unless I were *awfully* desperate. Basically if Vivid and the rest of the mainstream porn companies are talking about fighting internet piracy what they're actually talking about is trying to shut down the internet pornstars who are putting out actually spankable porn so people are forced to start paying 24.95 for a tape of their crap again.

It's great that the same actor played the tough guy library cop 'Bookman' on a episode of Seinfeld.

BTW, new porn like the Vivid crap is useless. The classics are the way to go.

I have a huge stash of classic stuff on dvdrs taken from usenet with Seka, Annette Haven, Desiree Cousteau, Ginger Lynn, Christy Canyon, etc etc......

I wonder if the porn industry has reached a point of saturation?

I mean, you can only have so many inter-racial midget transsexual scat movies on the market. They're all the same. At $30 to $60 a movie, there are better things to spend your money on (blow up dolls, escorts, mail order brides, etc...)

As klymen pointed out, many people can get away with the free stuff fine. That number is going to grow as amateur sites get better and professional sites become generic.

Heck, you could even point to the parallels between the porn industry with the operating system industry. Who needs Windows or MacOS when Linux and BSD is "good enough"? Even if you do need Windows, why bother paying for it when 50 torrent sites and 5 different Usenet binary groups have ISOs?

Suicidal Writer 2008-01-13 11:37:12 PM
I'm sorry. The concept of paying for porn is about to become anachronistic. Quality films can be made for under $1000, which can be recouped pretty easily from ad-revenue. But here is the thing: amateur porn is more a cultural dialogue in the postmodern world. The profit motive is not the number motive for producing porn anymore than personal hobbies are about profit.

Color me shocked if the brick and mortar pay-for-porn industry exists in 15-20 years. I could still see web-based subscription services working partially, but people always put the pay stuff on P2P networks anyway.

Loren 2008-01-13 11:37:55 PM
Vivid also needs to learn that putting several minutes of ads that you can't skip in front of a movie will turn off consumers.
