(TED.com) Video The most amazing video of an octopus disguising itself as algae that you will see today, and perhaps ever. (Octopus scene is at 4:15, but the first four minutes are cool, too.)   (ted.com) divider line 126

That's incredible. Part of the reason my childhood dream was to be an underwater videographer.

I see what you did there. But not clearly.

I didn't see what the octopus did there.

Jokes aside, for anyone interested, Wikipedia has a good read on Mimic Octopi.

God, I hate an octopus. Sure, it looks all great when it's underwater. But, what if the Octopus came on land? Would you all think it was so amazing and great then?

Suppose your walking down the street and you decide to go to your favorite deli? You go to open the door when, lo and behold, some filthy octopus has parked himself there, blending into the door and perfectly camouflaging himself? Instead of going into the deli to enjoy a nice, delicious pastrami sandwich, an octopus has attached itself to your face and is using is suckers to sap the life out of your face.

God, I hate an octopus.

Speaking of Octopuses:

Human beings are not alone in experiencing the pain of loss, depression or suicide. Attachment to another can lead both to experiencing the pain of loss, as well as the limitation of life's experiences, even for subprimates. Solomon cites what appears to have been a suicide of an octopus trained to perform in a circus. When the circus was disbanded, the color hue of the octopus changed, indicating to zoologists an alteration in mood after no one paid attention to the repertoire of tricks it had learned to entertain spectators, and it stabbed itself.

Everytime I see that I get jealous. Sure, we are the smartest animal species on the planet but we are also one of the most dull looking.

I love the audience reaction to the octopus camouflaging itself into the algae when the video is reversed.

Umm, there is always time for bacon. Just go make yourself some right now....you'll feel better....and in the morning, make yourself some more.

Seen this in the Great Barrier Reef. Our dive leader was pointing towards a coral covered rock and making hand signals indicating that there was an cuttlefish. The rest of us are exchanging glances wondering what the hell he was talking about when suddenly we got close enough that the cuttlefish had enough and 'decloaked'. The whole rock + coral was the cuttlefish! One of the best memories of an awesome trip.

Now if we can only figure out how to make our militaries battle armor immulate the octopus's ability to camoflauge itself in its surrounding environment than we will be invincible!

On another note. Wouldnt it be crazy if we changed colors like that when we got into fights or were scared. What a crazy world we live in. I highly recommend this video for anyone currently on or planning to use a hallucinogen!
