Heck, I feel bad for Michigan skiing. We had an awesome November and December, but January saw 60 degree weather in most parts of southern Michigan and an almost total melt around the state. I enjoy the easier driving, but I would rather see the businesses doing well.

Even if global warming/cooling/climate change turns out to be complete crap, can we still institute higher emission and pollution standards? I, for one, am willing to take a hit to my finances in order to implement more pollution controls.

Unlikely. I agree in principle, but it's cost prohibitive and wouldn't drastically improve air quality. Breathe deeper to get your precious oxygen, you sniveling carbon-based life form.

Wow, that one Russian scientist must be absolutely correct! How great it is when media folk find a single scientist about whom to write. Clearly, this nullifies the hundreds of studies and hundreds of other scientists that conclude the opposite. Whew -- glad we got that settled.

But, let this be known -- it is in the best interests of this science to have dissenters! If everyone agreed on the issue(s), there would be no reason for rigorous scientific exploration! Dissension and doubt are good for science, but only if accurately conveyed and reported.

hoohoodilly 2008-01-13 12:43:06 PM
Gore thinks hyperbole is justifiable:

Q: There's a lot of debate right now over the best way to communicate about global warming and get people motivated. Do you scare people or give them hope? What's the right mix?

A: I think the answer to that depends on where your audience's head is. In the United States of America, unfortunately we still live in a bubble of unreality. And the Category 5 denial is an enormous obstacle to any discussion of solutions. Nobody is interested in solutions if they don't think there's a problem. Given that starting point, I believe it is appropriate to have an over-representation of factual presentations on how dangerous it is, as a predicate for opening up the audience to listen to what the solutions are, and how hopeful it is that we are going to solve this crisis.

So, yeah, the sea level will rise 20 feet, and not 20 inches, because how else can I get rich selling "carbon offsets"?

Gore pisses me off. Serially. And I voted for him...

I believe in GW, but I love the excuses people make; you'd think global warming had the effect of simply causing all-out hell for everything on the planet, but had nothing to do with warming it up.

Global warming can be real even if every place doesn't get warmer all the time, and yes, it still involves heat.

I live in a major resort town in the German Alps and this is the second season where there has been little reliable snow and high temperatures. The seven seasons before that the snow was off the charts.

Whether it's the dreaded global warming or just statistical variation as part of the climate, I can't say. What I do know is that if it's the former, the 2011 Alpine World Championships are going to look pretty shabby. If it's the latter, then I chose a bad two years to ski Germany.

/I don't know which is worse.

This is from the Science and Public Policy Institute, founded by a group of former GOP congressmen and funded almost entirely by donations Exxon.

Seriously, would it kill you to do a little research? There is NO independent scientific controversy on the reality of climate change. Show me a credentialed scientist who says there is, and I will show you A) a money trail, or B) a partisan diploma mill like liberty university that exists only to cancel out REAL academic consensus.

Won't work. Competitive Game Theory shows you'll immediately be overtaken by those who consume more. And they'll have 8 kids, making your lifelong efforts to get 30% better gas mpg and install CFL bulbs (thus reducing your "footprint" by 15% total) pretty insignificant. Same is true of nations. If the US were to triple the price of electricity or whatever to reduce carbon emissions, China will simply pick up all our remaining business and increase power consumption over there. But the US won't do that. We'd be the ones increasing our carbon usage if China limited their output. So, CGT says we will never cooperate like this and are all basically doomed anyways.

I haven't seen more than two inches in New York so far, and even that only lasted for a day at most. Which is a pretty big farking shame, because I was really hoping to photograph snow in central park. Unless we get hit by a blizzard within the next six weeks, I don't see that happening.

Yeah some cities might get flooded or whatever, but really super large-scale....is global warming really a bad thing?

The procession of cognitive dissonance in global warming denial zealots has been surreal. In the last decade we've gone from...

1: Global warming is not happening!
2: Global warming is maybe happening, but no way is it our fault!
3: Global warming is happening and it's our fault, but it's not like it'll affect us adversely!
4: Global warming is happening, it's our fault, it'll affect us adversely, and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope!
