As a kid,
Mom always told me not to fool around on the escalator.
Now I know why.

An early nominee for the Darwin Award.

Seems there's a trend with the Darwin Award and the phrase "he had been drinking quite a bit".

My favorite escalator thing is in the building I work in in NYC. The up and down escalators are in separate stairwells, and you have to have a swipe card to exit from the stairwell to each floor. One morning, I wasn't paying attention, and went up one floor too far. Yup: I was stuck, unless some kind soul came along and let me onto that floor.

Tellya what, running down an up escalator is a lot harder than it looks.

Me too, sadly.

I gotta say, part of me always wanted to fall down an up escalator. It would be like... no gravity.

Yet more proof that alcohol makes stupid people dead. If this dude was high he would still be at the top of the escalator wondering if the thing has an end to it or does it go all the way to farkin china where they have all that good shusi.

THINK, DON'T DRINK.

Does CNN always include "Story Highlights"? The title made me lol.

Story Highlights
# Man was apparently trying to slide down banister of escalator
# He died after falling several stories at shopping/entertainment complex, police say
# Victim's friends tell police he had been drinking
# Hollywood & Highland complex includes theater where Academy Awards presented

I first read that as "elevator" and I cringed. Then I RTFA, and while sympathetic for his family and friends, what a dumbass.

But escalators are everywhere. This could have happened to anyone, at any time. What we need is effective legislature concerning the heights and locations and placement of escalators.

I can't tell you how many times I've envisioned doing this down the escalators at the Atlanta airport. I'll stop thinking that now.

I've seen it done, it works, do it if it is not busy. Those escalators are not exposed to a multi story drop, the worst thing that can happen is you get going too fast.

Running up the down escalator was pretty surprising, too. Especially when I had to figure out how to get off at the top.

/Didn't really have to go that way. I was in the mall Christmas shopping and felt like doing it.
//Some guy actually chided me like I was a kid. I cracked the hell up.

when a few friends and myself were on spring break one year we decided to run up a down escalator, that wasnt too hard, but going down an up escalator looked like instant stupidity, gald we didnt do it and we are still alive.

Before all you farkers run out and try it, decide on whether the escalator you've chosen is sensible. I've seen this done on the metal divider between two escalators on the London Underground. No vertical drop, but it must have been about 200 feet long.

There were bars across every ten or fifteen yards (with the 'hold the handrail' signs or something), which you might have imagined would help you control the slide. It turns out that you'll fly over the first bar; by the second, you'll have enough speed for it to flip you from feet-first to head-first; and the rest of the bars will have a go at cracking your skull. The young gentleman wasn't moving when he reached the bottom.

I guess he was patched together in the end; I don't remember it making the news.

"Hey," Herbie said, "Tony, can you fly?"
But Tony couldn't fly
Tony died

I want my own escalator so I can go up when it's going down and go down when it's going up. That would be fun. Good exercise, too. But not down like the dumbass.

Yeah, I learned that, too. I was working at a theatre in Houston with escalators at least two stories tall leading up from the main lobby. At the end of a performance they both go down, because in theory everyone is leaving. I was at the bottom of the escalator and not wanting to wait for the long line at the elevator, decided it might be "fun" to run up the down escalator instead. I finally made it, but decided it's something I will never do again. It's definitely not the shortcut you think it is.

I fell down an escalator when I was three. I got caught by a man with a moustache. Then I got to ride in an ambulance. They turned on the sirens when I asked.

/Now I tell stories that have no point

This has happened more than once at the Mall of America. Alcohol on the 4th floor + escaltors open on one side to the 3rd and 2nd floors = drunks taking the fast route to the 1st floor.

WHY IS NO ONE TAKING MY SUGGESTION OF ESCALATOR PLACEMENT LEGEISLATION SERIOUSLY? Think of the deaths that could be prevented. Just think of them.

Please.

The escalators in the Peachtree Center MARTA station are about a gazillion feet long. You might end up with butt burn if you slid down one of them. Plus you'd be moving right along when you got to the bottom.

FTA apparently attempting to slide down the banister of an escalator

Aren't escalator banisters usually rubber, or some other grippy material? You'd have a hard time sliding down that without some kind of Teflon pants...

\note to self, file patent for teflon pants
\\unless banister is supposed to mean one of those metal dividers, in which case we have another piece of fine reporting from the AP

/It wouldn't be like Bourne, I can tell you that much
