Wasn't Genghis Khan a lot more historically important than all these rich asshats in America who got universities named after them?

Genghis Khan? You mean, aside from being the most accomplished musical group in history, they also founded a university?

Someone needs to tell this "professor" (and the writer of the article) that most people do NOT believe Columbus discovered America.

There's a difference between being barely above other primates and walking here on accident over hundreds of years, and realizing, on a globe, that this continent was distinct from the other Eurasian continent.

Europeans discovered America. Amerigo Vespuci at the forefront. By using math, they new that the Earth was much bigger than the distant Coloumbus's travels suggested, and realized there was something halfway. It was a major accomplishment, and mulitcultural ideals need not take away from it.

It's not a slight against the native americans that they don't get credit for discovering that there was a separate American continent. Their peoples had it too easy to develop technology. Most of them didn't even use wheels. Europeans had the fortune of living in crappy climes, and developed better stuff a bit faster. Take solace: things are now reversed and Western societies now have it much easier and are lookin' kinda dumb and chubby.

I believe Ghengis Khan has more descendants than anyone else on earth.

I would have thought this was pretty obvious, that asians entered the Americas via Alaska.

How else would the ancestors of the native indians have gotten there?

That's the point. The "native" Americans entered via "Mongolia" too. But this was wayyy prehistoric times, not counting the fact that they were still stone-age when Columbus got here.

So Mongolians were some of the first people in North America.. okay. What does that have to do with Columbus? It's not like the history books say that Columbus was the first human to reach North America. But Columbus didn't discover North America, nor was it Amerigo Vespuchi. It was Lief Eriksson and the Vikings... but they only stayed for the wine, and if you count Greenland, the vikings have had the longest continuous settlement over here than anyone else except the Native Americans.

So.. Mongolians... Not surprised or impressed.

In any case, if the little known explorer Bonehedi Sukassor had taken Amerigo's place on the boat, the course of western civilization be forever changed.

Amerigo Vespucci (March 9, 1454 - February 22, 1512) was an Italian merchant, explorer and cartographer. He played a senior role in two voyages which explored the east coast of South America between 1499 and 1502. -the wiki

well because those people were illiterate stone age people.
It DOES make a difference.

/not saying they deserved to be wiped out or nuthin
//but the Aztecs would certainly have killed and subjugated Europeans if they had the advanced technology

Ahh I dunno, they get a bad press. Plus theres loads of other types of civilisations that were butchered along with them. I don't know if European barbarism has been beaten in history. A sacrafice to the gods might sound crazy but when compared to a Spanish genocide it looks quaint.

johnphantom: Reminder: the victors wrote the history books. Do not believe EVERYTHING you read.

Well, if he's talking about human sacrifices en masse and being extremely war-like, I think that's pretty well documented by existing stone structures in Mexico.

I just got back from Mexico. I visited several Mayan ruins (Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Coba, Tulum). You can see from the reliefs carved into the buildings where the central Mexican Toltec and Aztec influence started coming in in those cities and how much bloodier it was than earlier sites.

Now I'm not justifying the manner of their conquest. But he's not incorrect in saying that the Aztec were nasty farkers.

bigforearms 2008-01-13 09:37:52 AM
Impudent Domain: well because those people were illiterate stone age people.

FYI, the Maya had a writing system and the Inca had just discovered rudimentary copper tools when the conquistadors showed up. But yeah, other than that, illiterate stone age people.

Both the Aztecs and the Mayans had written language. Also, the Aztecs were not at all nice. In fact, Cortez was able to recruit a lot of the ticked off neighboring and subjugated tribes to help him fight the Aztecs.

optional: Both the Aztecs and the Mayans had written language.

The Mayans were the only ones who could write their language out. The Aztecs had some limited hieroglyphics but they did not represent much of the vocabulary of their spoken language.
