I like his rendition of Black Sabbath Paranoid.

But can he cut his own meat?

What in this video indicates that he's "playing by ear?" Wouldn't "playing by ear" mean he heard it once and then played it purely from having heard it? It seems more likely that he practiced this one song, got good at it, and recorded himself.

That was excellent.

Good find Subby

Yeah...I didn't see his ear anywhere near the keys. So there.

At 2:44 he picks his nose.

Not too shabby. If it seems boring, skip ahead to about 5:00 where he changes
tempo a bit.

When we were 14, we were playing Cinema Show, Duke's Travels, Firth of Fifth, Camera Eye, Tempus Fugit etc. "by ear" with "no sheet music."

Meh. You can have your Freebird.

Subby here, it's playing by ear because, at least according to his Youtube profile, he doesn't use sheet music and taught himself these songs purely from having heard them.

And my favorite by far is Fade to Black, he does that solo perfectly.

That said, kewl rendition there.

steamingpile 2008-01-13 02:57:10 AM
It sounds like the song is being played on an easy listening station or in an elevator, there are better songs to be played in the piano this ones left to classic rock.

It's great until he gets to the solo and totally slopifies the beat.

/keep your wrists up, limpy.

Further proof that Freebird does indeed suck. Keep it up kid, another ten years and even you will be mediocre. Until then, invest in a metronome.

OT but a farker posted a link to a freebird version of rudolph that he did. I lost the file in an itunes f up. Does anybody have a link to it?

Playing by ear.

Only classical musicians and 8-year olds use sheet music.

You guys actually think this is awesome? Popular music isn't very difficult to pick up by ear--right there I figured out freebird is I V VI VIIb IV, etc. If you know your do-re-mis, it's pretty easy to pick out the melody.

Second of all, who gives a shiat? Brown people are like clockwork cockroaches, plugging away mundanely with amazing feats of technicality... but they have no ability to create art like this. So they're little tape recorders. Who cares?

Uh, playing by ear is not some arcane science, folks. That is all.

My first thought, too....hehehe.

evilboyevil 2008-01-14 12:04:35 AM
Woh, I was going to say what ComputerSaysNo was going to say, except for the racist parts.

Whenever I hear a prodigy playing "difficult" music, it is usually very mechanical and has little passion in it. I'm beginning to think a lot of prodigies should focus on science rather than art.

Oop...I see what happened.

See, you were okay that first part...then you careened off into batshiat crazy there. Try again, this time with lithium. And a shotgun-to-the-mouth chaser.

ArmoredFelix 2008-01-14 12:22:17 PM
His timing on some of the parts toward the start is atrocious. Well, it's not superb anyway. Obviously he has talent, needs to spend a few more tens of hours a week chained to his piano though. This was not played by ear as other posters have commented.

Jim R 2008-01-14 05:39:51 PM
I think he's obviously been practicing this song, and wasn't just "playing by ear."

But still, very impressive!

raavek 2008-01-14 06:13:54 PM
Playing by ear doesn't mean you can't practice something. Playing by ear basically means you never looked at sheet music to figure the song out. So he could have listened to Freebird on repeat for a few hours while he plunked out the notes.

My problems with his playing, coming from a classically trained pianist who plays by ear:

His left hand is boring. All he does is line up a triad and float on it til he moves his hand to the next. If he would have done a few runs up and down the piano, I would have been a bit more interested and impressed.

Tonal quality. This is just me, but he should have played an octave lower. It sounded like a nursery song to me in that range. If he would have stuck to the C3-C4 range and pounded out some of the bass notes a bit more, yeah, it would have added some gusto.

Emotional velocity and whatnot. All notes were the same level. Make the beginning softer and lighter, pound the shiat out of the solo. The piano is a beautiful instrument that if you dink with it you can play some extremely emotional stuff.

His timing and rythems were off. No other way to put it.

Decent for a 14ish year old, I've heard much better and MUCH MUCH worse, so props regardless.

This is why I love Fark, because even people who disagree with you are funny as hell. But mistersnark, REALLY? Shotgun to the mouth? I mean, it's debatable what I'm saying is even wrong does it really warrant that kind of reaction?

This is why I love racism!
