I've never heard one carry on a meaningful conversation in any human language. They are perfectly happy to take nonsense as orders if you use the same nonsense each time.

If you line up a German and English taught dog and tell them "Sitz!" I suspect they'll both obey about the same.

Actually, yes. Police dogs generally are trained in another language, usually German, so when suspects scream "GET THIS FARKING DOG OFF ME!" the dog won't understand.

Similarly, dogs down here in the barrio seldom understand English, so when cops scream "GET THIS FARKING DOG OFF ME!" the dog doesn't understand, which is why so many pit bulls get shot downtown by cops.

Yeah, I always thought it was common practice in the U.S. to train police dogs in German. I don't know where I learned that or why, though.

"Those foreign dogs will do the jobs that local dogs won't", say the labourists. "They are taking the job of our dogs away" say the tories. But all agree that if those dogs come they should at least learn the Queen's language first!

I got a pup from a German lady but the only command she told me about was platz. Several months later I was marching my dogs into the garage and it reminded be of POWs, so I said schnell and Ringo double-timed it into the garage. I lol.

I know this translates to "I do not know." according to babelfish, but I'm reading it as "I am not white".

"Weiss" in that context is the first person present conjugation of "wissen," which means "to know."

"Weiss" also happens to mean "white." To say "I am not white," you would say "Ich bin nicht weiss."

Hmm.. the British are at it again. Last couple of years, they came over here (the Netherlands/Holland) for dogs. Only after they brought them back to England, did they realize that the dogs only understood Dutch commands. *doh* So the handlers had to learn a bit of Dutch.

My poor dog has to put up with my Dinglish, mostly English with Dutch. The funny part is that he only responds on my commands after I say, Nu! (Now). Kom hier, Come here, nu! So I think that dogs can be bilingual. But the older they are...

Dogs learn what ever language you use around them. we tought our shiz-tu that "mangos" are her treats, "goldfish" = go for a walk and "go home" means to go away. She also knows many normal human words and commands. We also tought her that adding the word "now" in a normal tone to the end of anything means she HAS to do it. If we just say "come here" without the word "now" she thinks its a request and may or may not depending on how she feels about it.
Its a unique dog, she buzzes and clucks when she is happy.
