You typed that with sarcasm, I imagine, but in all seriousness this is a true plus. Both in the sense that there is no such thing as a consistent long-term voting record in the senate, so your electability is totally shot after several terms, and in the more practical sense that compromising any principles you have and bargaining away all ethics in exchange for some pork is such an ingrained habit that very few congressmen can do very well as president even if elected-- it requires a certain amount of muleheadedness your average congresscritter lacks.

Or, in short: Damn right, that's why Kerry lost his run against a man who couldn't speak his native language properly.

He's not the only politician that's ever voted "present." Also popular is "not voting" which Clinton has used. And Obama's "present" votes account for only roughly 3% of his state senate votes.

dletter [TotalFark] 2008-01-12 11:44:33 PM
I hear the corpse of Lyndon Johnson is going to endorse Obama as well.

Echoic 2008-01-12 11:44:40 PM
Anyone who is criticizing him for 'present' votes need to be educated on how the system works.

Planned Parenthood President: Anyone Who Thinks A Present Vote Is A "Duck" Doesn't Understand How the Process Works. "There is a presumption, if one is not familiar with the mechanics of the General Assembly, that a present vote is a 'duck.' Pam Sutherland, the CEO and President of Illinois Planned Parenthood said of [this] Hull argument: "I think it's not well-based...I think it's somebody who doesn't understand how the legislative process works."

Voting Present in the State Legislature is Used as A Signal to the Other Party, Not As a Way to Duck the Issue. "An aspect of Obama's State Senate voting record that is drawing attention is his "present" votes. A present vote is a third option to an up or down "yes" or "no" that is used with great frequency in the Illinois General Assembly. It has many varied and nuanced meanings that, in the context of the actual bills, border on boring. It's most important use is as a signal -- to the other party, to the governor, to the sponsor -- to show a willingness to compromise on the issue if not the exact bill, to show disapproval for one aspect of the bill, to question the constitutionality of the bill, to strengthen the bill.
- Chicago Daily Herald

Please learn what a present vote actually is before you mindlessly insult them out of ignorance.

It's all about the super delegates who make up ~40% of the total delegates. Clinton has a big lead there.

I'd love it if Obama manages to pull over 1-2% victories in every state, getting all the damn momentum, and then gets trounced at the convention by all the Hillary super delegates. That is where experience matters. The look on everyone's face when Obama has to choke his words and compliment Hillary will be just priceless.

Sure, a polarizing persona nominated over a democratically elected and unifying persona by politicians not inline with the ballot casting Americans, that would be really funny. I think democracy is stupid too.

Cuz every GOP nominee is, by definition, mentally retarded? If that were the case, you;d have little to worry about. As it is, McCain is coming on strong. He's not only the most competent moderate for the GOP, he's the most experienced candidate in the race, and he takes your concern as a compliment. In fact, your fear he'd win the gen is the ONLY reason he'll get the nomination. Thank god for strategic voting.
