How very disappointing. A greatest hits album is bad enough, but how can they leave off their actual great songs?

Leave out Metropolis and Under A Glass Moon, but be sure to include Hollow Years.

I really need to listen to some more DT.

They have songs? All I hear is instrument masturbation.

El Freak [TotalFark] 2008-01-12 10:57:26 AM
I'm the only musician I know of who absolutely detests this band. Unlistenable, cheesy, pretentious masturbatory crap. Note: attending Berklee and having the ability to play a bazillion notes per hour in odd time signatures does not mean your music doesn't suck shiat. Plus their fanboys rival Mac nerds in sheer obnoxiousness.

too many great songs left out to fork over hard earned cash for.

sorry, dt.

fail

All of the technical ability (and more) of any band in the world, yet absolutely boring. People say Rush has no soul in their music but, compared to Dream Theater, Rush is Ray Charles

Scenes from a Memory is their only truly great album. Don't bother with the rest unless you like hearing masturbatory keyboard solos for hours at a time.

I'm with El Freak. Dream Theater sounds like music composed and played by a machine. Technically precise, yes. Imbued with any sense whatsoever of humanity, no.

And that's my entire problem with this band. Don't get me wrong, I love progessive music as much as the next guy (see Brazil and Damiera) but this stuff is just manufactured crap.

I used to like DT and went to their concerts. But everything after Scenes from a Memory (which rocks) sucks balls. They lost me as a fan when they played a 10-minute song about stem cell research during a 90-minute set. fark them.

I believe you're referring to The Great Debate.

While I agree that they haven't made anything truly great since Scenes From a Memory, I do still enjoy everything they've put out since to some capacity.

Except Live at Budokan. James sounded like shiat that night.

Their best song was the version of "A Change of Seasons" from the "Dances With Eternity" boot. After that, it was all downhill.

Not a huge Rush fan, but they do have the ability to write memorable songs that aren't just long wheedily solos with lots of completely pointless time changes. That's why they enjoy some popularity outside of the kind of guys who hang out at Guitar Center all day, unlike Dream Theater.

Damn, even their NAME is unbearably pretentious.

MoeSzyslak 2008-01-12 01:43:57 PM
Musical circle jerk. If I ever need a robot to lay down a guitar track I'll give John Petrucci a call. We get it, you can play one zillion notes per minute. So can a jack-hammer. Now please play something that sounds like it was written by real live humans with a pulse and some soul.

/great musicians though

Scenes from a Memory blows. It's a concept album with a storyline, except the story is over halfway through, and the rest of the songs are LaBrie braying about "traaaaaagggeeedddyyyyyyyy" and the aforementioned wheedly-deedly. SFAM ruined DT for me. Hell, I even liked A Change of Seasons.

No, that I'm pretty sure was written by aliens with a rudimentary knowledge of rhythm and meter.

Dream Theater is the poor man's Rush.

Hell, they wish they were Testament.

Allow me to introduce myself. I've been playing over 30 years and detest Dream Theater. All the technical ability in the world and not a damned thing they play is worth the time to listen. Give me Crim any day of the week.

The Billdozer: I wish that DT would cover some Iron Maiden, especially "Heaven Can Wait" or "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son".

They covered Number of the Beast in its entirety live.

I used to have the same opinion that most seem to have of Dream Theater for years. One day they finally clicked with me. Dream Theater makes symphonic influenced metal, where the symphonic parts and the metal parts blend together rather than merely forced together. Too many bands out there will simply write a great symphonic intro only to have the rest of the song devolve into a simple over-distorted riff.

MatrixOutsider [TotalFark] 2008-01-12 05:06:04 PM
I can't stand the singer's over-enunciation and transforming two syllable words into four. They should just do a cover album of Rush songs and leave out their "hits" no one has ever heard on the radio.

If you want to hear Dreamtheater style music, but with actual songs and the masturbatory stuff kept to a minimum, try Muse.

In the time you guys have been arguing about this, I wrote a three-chord, three-minute punk rock song on my acoustic guitar, and I'm going to play it at my band's show next weekend and people will be able to have fun and dance to it and enjoy themselves.

Two discs? Twenty two songs?

I would imagine the two albums are 6 hours long...each.

I'm another long-time musician who can't stand them. Even worse than the band is that horrific vocalist of theirs. And people have the nerve to complain about Geddy's singing.

Dream Theater is so god damned corny and pretentious they can make even a Rush fan blush.

Too many notes/changes with absolutely NO groove.

Their music is so forced and labored in such a contrived way that there is nothing natural or organic to it.

I don't give a sh*t how many notes or rapid fire tempos you can cram into a couple of bars,if you don't sound good you suck.

Dead on. It's music for people who think Yngwie Malmsteen is better than James Brown.

What a bunch of jealous, insecure whiners. Some people excel in ways that you and I never will, so you can't resist trying to knock 'em down a peg, right? Keep your 'humanity'. Give me a band whose members not only know music and their instruments backwards, forwards, and inside out. In fact, give me a few more. But they're 100x better at what they do than you will ever be at anything, so you have to pretend that all they can do is play fast, and that anybody can do that, and they don't have soul. Bull.

DT is music for musicians. If you really can't hear all the greatness in there, it's 100% your problem.

I read that in a voice that was sort of cross between Jack Black in High Fidelity and Comic Book Guy, and it amused me.

craigdamage 2008-01-13 09:59:10 AM
Retard.

Super fast fingers is NOT the definition of musician and certainly NOT songwriter. Tricky and or rapid tempos and changes is NOT the
key element in genuine musical creativity either.

I can assure you with total conviction that it is nether jealousy or insecurity that drives me to feel contempt for empty music that has no soul and is completely devoid of integrity.
