Please Dems do not take try to take the high road with this election cycle. The liberals are out of their minds with their hacking and smearing. Did you hear what Chris Matthews said about Hillary? - saying she only got her job because Bill screwed around. Of course every word of that is true, but to hear it on MSNBC is amazing.

Let's agree that both sides act like little kids during the primary season

I'm not a big Huckabee fan, but he's got a point. Thompson didn't do a whole hell of a lot in the Senate. Even his aides say he was pretty laid-back (read: lazy) back then. I really think that he let himself get talked into running by others.

I'm finding this hilarious. These men have eight years of the worst presidency staring them in the face and what do they do? Act like Bush, right down to the Rovian tactics of basically being an asshole.

Yup, real change, people.

Obama's got this by a landslide. If he wins the Dem nomination, he's in the White House with no problems. The Republicans are simply too pathetic to even make a real effort.

So, in your opinion, the only way to have a moral compass is to be a Christian (or part of some religion)?

Because I'm not a part of any religion, nor am I an atheist, but I have a pretty good understanding on what is right and wrong - the very foundation of morality.

And frankly, when someone's being an a-hole, I don't assign it back to whatever their religion (or gender, or race, or sexual orientation) in order to reason it to myself.

I just think that person is an a-hole.

Nimnom 2008-01-12 09:58:42 AM

Not at all. Most atheist will point out someone who claims to be Christian to be unchristian. Like, "I farked a gay guy," that's okay, because being gay is fine, "hypocrite Christian farks a gay guy," well, what were you doing pretending to be morally superior to us, by not farking gays?

Christians like to stand on a platform of moral responsibility, so it really is okay to point them out on that.

Where did this come from?
Did you decide this all by yourself?

Do you honestly believe that the only way a person can have a sense of
morality is by adopting one or another religion? If so, does this mean,
to your way of thinking, one religion is more moral that another?
If so, would you please tell us which religion is the most moral?

No. I know atheists with far stronger morals than most Christians. In fact, they're better Christians than most Christians (aside from the first few commandments anyway). They've got that golden rule thing down, though.

Digeratus 2008-01-12 10:11:53 AM
groovyjman21: it is understood the atheist has no morals.

fark you.

Religion is an excuse. It's an excuse to be narrow-minded, it's an excuse to avoid thinking independently, and it's an excuse for bad behavior and, yes, a lack of morals. It is, however, a great way to keep children in line. (I myself was brought up as a Christian.) What better way to scare them into good behavior than to threaten them with being locked in hell for eternity? Than to claim that an all-knowing invisible man in the sky is always watching you? It's a childish threat to keep people in line when they can't be bothered to be responsible for themselves. And yet it seems frequently not to work. I constantly hear about priests molesting the children entrusted in their care. I constantly read in the news of radical Muslims murdering innocent infidels in the name of their god. I constantly come face to face with fearful, and even violent, xenophobia fueled by religion. I deal with this on a personal level: my parents are open to my atheism, my grandparents are not. They are otherwise very nice people, but when they talk down people of other religions and beliefs, I'm reduced to politely and sadly saying nothing. How can you say this is moral? My grandparents live in the mid-south, and the people there have a culture of kindness and courtesy, unless you're not Christian. Then they stare at you in disgust. They ignore you within eyesight, then belittle you beyond it. Treating people damned to Hell like humans doesn't advance one to eternal bliss. How can you say this is moral?

I live by one fundamental axiom: Do unto others as you would have them do unto yourself. From this, I derive another axiom: All are created equal. When I say I live by this axiom, I mean it. It permeates every opinion I have, every decision I make, every action I do. I say please and thank you. I hold doors for both men and women. I respect others' space and property. I offer help when I can. And I do not need to be religious to do this. I do this because I answer to myself, and I answer to those around me. I am polite to others because it is the right thing to do. I shy away from aggression because I myself do not like to be the object of aggression. Now, which is moral: being kind to others because it is the right thing to do, or because one is threatened with eternal punishment?

In conclusion, eat shiat, bigot.

Marcus, the reason the FairTax is quoted as 23% is because it is figured inclusively so that people can compare the rate to the income tax rate. If the Income tax was figured exclusively the rate would be around 33%. It may be a matter of semantics but it does allow a Fair Comparison.

"On the one hand, you have the Reagan revolution. You have the Reagan coalition of limited government and strong national security," Thompson said. "On the other hand, you have the direction that Governor Huckabee would take us in."

So where exactly does Thompson think he fits in there?

"It was real interesting hearing Fred Thompson talk about Ronald Reagan last night," Huckabee said. "Because Fred Thompson supported Gerald Ford in 1976 and not Ronald Reagan. He supported fellow Tennessean Howard Baker in 1980 and not Ronald Reagan. I appreciate his recent conversion, but some of us were for Ronald Reagan back in the early days; our legacy goes back a little further."

The other does the right thing because it IS the right thing.

Which one has "morals"?

Morals are simply rules. Rules like the constitution. I have no religion, but I have a simple guide to live by. Live, liberty, pursuit of happiness all endowed by the Creator (my parents).

The thing I don't get though is that the highest rate for Federal Income tax is only like 28% and that is for people making over $250K a year. For middle and lower class people I'd be surprised if they pay much more than 23% under the current graduated tax system. In the broad scheme this whole 'Fair Tax' thing seems to be an intellectually dishonest attempt to give a big tax break to the wealthy and have the lower and middle class taxpayers make up for such a deficit in receipts.

The whole purpose is to do away with compliance costs and loopholes. It also fixes the whole, lets tax big business so you can applaud us for your cost of living going up phenomenon. Oh and no taxes on spending up to the poverty line via a monthly rebate. Yep it is designed to screw poor people. Oh yeah you also get to keep all of your paycheck from the federal end.

Yeah, pretty much.

Here's the thing too: you know how much your income taxes will be. My income taxes are taken out of my check, and I never see that part. But if, suddenly, my tax burden shifts from that predictable amount to a huge levy on everything I buy that I can't really predict as readily, that could really, really hurt.

We also forget the biggest engine of the economy is consumer spending. I think even with the extra income freed up by no income tax withholding, the sticker shock of seeing 23, 25, 30, whatever the fark percent added to everything you buy will depress that market.

What you are suggesting assumes consumption by the wealthy, in the United States itself. The wealthy don't consume as much of their income as a percentage of income. Also, this whole monthly rebate thing is just ridiculous. I thought the major selling point of the Fair Tax plan was to do away with the IRS, but if you did do away with it you'd just be replacing it with another large government agency in charge of calculating and managing refunds. Since the employees of this agency would need the exact same skill set as the IRS all that you'd be doing is changing the name of the IRS.

Also, it seems to me that the Mafia and other organized crime syndicates would love this 'Fair Tax' as they could purchase goods in Canada or Mexico, smuggle them across the border and sell them without this 23% Sales Tax. The Mafia is almost dead, and this Fair Tax is just the lifeline they need to recover prominence.

The Fair Tax also assumes people would be doing their consuming in the US. People in the Southwest and in the Northern states could just cross the border, sure the US Government would try to tariff everything coming back, but the system would likely crash do to immense volume.

It just seems to me that the Fair Tax makes too many assumptions to be practical.
