Not surprised he said this. Anything even HINTING towards letting the US in there, and he'd have a REAL shiatstorm on his hands.

milk_plus 2008-01-11 12:20:09 PM
Musharraf has a lot to gain by letting the US run covert missions in western Pakistan to undermine the Taliban and draw their focus away from the Pakistani government while pretending to be angry about it. The Taliban is a dangerous liability for him but he can't openly support US because we're as popular as a Michael Jackson daycare center over there.

He could be miffed that we were backing a more legitimate government instead of his old military dictatorship and it's also become fashionable out that way to tell the US to go piss up a rope. I'd still be a little surprised if he didn't take a more pragmatic view here.

"We fight the terrorists and we fight all of those who give them aid. America has a message for the nations of the world: If you harbor terrorists, you are terrorists. If you train or arm a terrorist, you are a terrorist. If you feed a terrorist or fund a terrorist, you're a terrorist, and you will be held accountable by the United States and our friends."

I'm sure we can spend all day debating the definition of "harbor," but I'm interested in hearing Iraq War supporters comments on this unsurprising development.

"They would regret that day"

No they wouldn't, because the Pakistani military wouldn't be able to find them. They can't find anybody.

helchose: Bhutto slipped on an interview and I've also heard it from other various sources.

It was clear her slip was referring to someone else, as I remember in the thread discussing that interview. It was the person who was connected to Daniel Pearl's death, Sheikh something or other.

fark Pakistan. Any doubts I had wheather or not they'll supply nukes to the crazies has evaporated. Those assholes are used to thinking about warfare along tribal lines which means they aren't prepared for the kind of widespread ass kicking that any western nation can lay down apon them.

Pakistan today is what Iran will be in ten years or so.

I say 'will' and not 'would' because I seriously doubt that any politician, of any alignment and from any nation, would risk another military interdiction in the Middle East between now and then.

10 Billion of our tax dollars paid to this regime since 2001.

What you get for your money. 10 Billion could pay for a helluva lot of border security HERE in the US.

Why we should stop spending a dime in these monkey countries and let the chips fall where they may.

Well, considering Pakistan has nukes, they pretty much dictate how the game will be played. I wonder if we will invade if MMA ever gets control of the government or military.

The MMA has the most direct appeal of all the parties. Prior to August 2002, it venomously attacked the Musharraf government for having betrayed the Taliban and sided with the US in its supposed 'war against Islam'. They reject any change to the Kashmir policy and have emerged as the only outright supporter of the Kashmir 'jihad'. They attack the presence of the American troops and agencies on Pakistani soil and speak in favour of the militant groups banned by the Musharraf government. Leaders under the MMA umbrella have issued fatwas of death on Americans and have denied the 9/11 attack by Osama bin Laden. The four parties are opposed to the present fiscal system and want it Islamised together with a complete enforcement of 'shariah'. All of them are pathologically opposed to America as a world power and its 'handmaiden', the IMF, and want Pakistan's foreign policy turned around. At the verbal level, MMA is closest to the minds of the Pakistani people.

Pakistan has no military forces in the Tribal Regions anyway, so how the hell would they know if we were?

Of course he's going to talk tough. If he said, "Please come into Pakistan for the purposes of carrying out military operations against Pakistanis", he'd be dead before uttering the last syllable.

I think the shiatstorm is already there and he's trying to keep it as small as possible. I doubt there's anything else he could say, at least publicly.

What exactly can he do to stop it? seeing as those are tribal controlled areas, he would be dead in seconds if he ever went into those areas. They are not even pakistan in all honesty since pakistan does not in any way control those areas.

Not really. Around half of the Pakistani armed forces are sympathetic to the Taliban. So unless having his head turned into spaghetti is somehow beneficial to him, I'm sure he would beg to differ with your sentiments.

I know, I know, "covert". Not possible. It would be all of five minutes before everyone knew what was going on.

Funsucker: Because if the situation were reversed, we'd be all cool with Pakistani troops crossing our border.

The US actually has control of its areas, our police and forces can go everywhere in the nation including along the borders. That is not true in Pakistan, the president could not go there with an entire armed to the teeth force protecting him. That part of Pakistan isnt really Pakistan territory, they have zero control of those areas.

WTF are you talking about? The guy is in an impossible position. The people we're trying to fight want to kill him, and if he allows us to help fight them, they will kill him. Nice troll attempt though.

czarangelus: we may as well carpet bomb the entire region of Waziristan into slag.

Wow, czar said something insiteful. Glad to hear you're on board with us bombing the shiat out of them.

JDAT 2008-01-11 01:52:14 PM
czarangelus: What's America's long term goal for the Pashtun? I mean, if we're really planning on killing all the Taliban, we may as well carpet bomb the entire region of Waziristan into slag. The Taliban is a very popular political movement among the ultra-conservative Pashtun people, and a little massacre here and there isn't going to get them to give it up. The Pashtun strongly support local Taliban leaders, and I doubt anything but dropping gold out of planes is going to win them over. So what's the plan?

The plan is we tell India to go in & we will be "right behind them" India & Pakistan go to war and we pretend we didn't have anything to do with it. Ta Dah! Seriously Czar, I don't think we have much of a plan other to monitor there ability to bring harm to us & keep that to a minimum. Thought out plans don't exactly come to mind when I think of this administration.

these farking countries are irrelivant.. let them destroy themselves.

reroute our "equal to the rest of the world" defense budget into actual defense, scrap alternative fuels in favor of nuclear power and electrical infrastructure development to brace for electric takeover, large tax breaks for evo purchases during integration period. if they bring the fight to us nuke everything having anything to do with them, shoot down inferior retailition nukes with beefed up defense system.

/it all sounds SO good.. not very profitable, though.

Honest Abe maybe?

Musharraf played the Lincoln card by stating, "Abraham Lincoln usurped rights to preserve the union, and Pakistan comes first. Whatever I do is for Pakistan, and whatever anyone else thinks is secondary."

She was referring to the guy who murdered Daniel Pearl. That fundamentalist was later apprehended and executed.

Here is the video. She just mixed up the names. It's kind of obvious from the content.
