Stephen Colbert the actor, or Stephen Colbert the pretend neocon character played by Stephen Colbert the actor?

The fact that Huckabee is pretty personable makes him even scarier to me. He's kind of likable. You almost forget what a batshiat crazy fundamentalist he is, and how he wants to reclaim the land for Jesus, and end abortion rights, and all sorts of other things dictated by his personal God.

Romney is scary, too, and Giuliani, in a different way, but you don't look at either and think, "aww, he seems like a nice guy with a sense of humor."

Huckabee truly, truly scares me.

THIS. My SO actually said to me a couple days ago, "This Huckabee guy seems all right. Not just for a Republican, but in general. I would possibly consider voting for him." (Background on her: she worked on the Gore 2000 campaign and is about as liberal as it gets.) Jaw hit the floor.

He's done some great things, and I believe he's a good person...but he's too fundie to be trusted as President of the United States, man.

cambie [TotalFark] 2008-01-10 01:47:15 PM
I liked Huckabee when I first saw him on Colbert Report. But when I saw how much of a religious nut he was, he quickly lost his appeal. If he truly chose Colbert as his Vice President, I might actually consider him again. And that's assuming it's Colbert the acter, not Colbert the character from Colbert Report.

Which reminds me, the comments on cnn are hilarious. Some of those people think his character on his show is who he is. One of the comments says something about him not being able to answer tough questions, and only pulling out another joke when asked one. That's his character, dipstick. I'm sure he'd do just as good answering the tough questions as any of this goofballs running on the Republican ticket this election.

And god I so don't want to vote Democrat. Maybe that's why I'm considering rethinking Huckabee.

He does seem like an all right guy, in general. I'm sure he's a nice guy, I'm sure he doesn't mean any ill will. I'm also sure he truly believes things he's said that don't sit well outside of his fundamentalist circles, and certainly not with me. I think he truly believes a God created the earth relatively recently, and that we all, as Americans, need Jesus.

And I think it's fine if someone believes this... but not someone holding the highest office in a nation that at least tries to keep church and state separate.

I don't think Huckabee's views are nuts. But I also think he will not win the nomination. On the very, very slim chance that he does he won't beat the Dem nom (whoever it is!).

He certainly is good at pickin'and a grinnin'. He'd probably make a great opener for Minnie Pearl.

But we are talking about the presidency here. This is all getting a bit too meta for comfort.

I was born and raised Catholic, by chance.
I'm an atheist by choice.

But I'm not the sort to really make a big deal about it... I just don't like people who are strictly religious using their beliefs to influence the laws of the land, and lack consideration for those of us who do not share their beliefs -- atheists, but also, people of other faiths.

Duh, I guess I could have just checked your profile. I didn't really mean anything by it, you just seemed overly aggressive towards Christians in your comment and I was curious to know how you were qualifying it.

How did I seem overly-aggressive?

I said he seemed like a fine man, a nice guy, and should feel free to believe what he wants... but that his beliefs don't strike me as something that is in line with someone who is running the country.

I'm not judging him really, aside from saying his views frighten me, because he truly puts his God first, above all, and I don't think that is what the President should hold as priority.

He actually did say he was going to reclaim the land for Jesus, though.

And I do think fundamentalists are batshiat crazy, yes. I think they're entitled to be, and live how they want, but I don't think they should be in power, dictating laws that the rest of us have to live by.

For the record, I think most of the candidates in this upcoming election are batshiat crazy on some level. He just happens to be batshiat crazy in the way that someone who thinks the world was created 6,000 years ago is.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure his official position is that he doesn't know when the world was created, he just knows God created it.

Honestly, crazy anti-religion farkers aside, I don't see how this particular belief is an issue. He's already said he's not going to legislate on this belief, and I feel as if the Democrat Congress would not pass it even if he tried.

The answer is 'no', and yet you claimed to be one-- which is illegal, as well as pathetic and totally lacking in respect for the armed forces.

p.s. The word atheist does not need capitalization. I realize you're trying to oh-so-subtly make the "atheism is a religion" non-argument, but this is a stupid way to do it.

According to the Bible, abortion is not murder. If the father of the lost child objects, a fine is levied. If the father has no problem with the loss of a child in the womb, there is no penalty.

Freeper_Madness: Judging him by his record as governor, can you give a few examples of some really scary sh*t?

Why just limit it to that? But if you are, how about starting with his pardon of the rapist/murderer Wayne Dumond? Then, you can move on to his declaration of "Student Religious Liberty Month" and a bill that restricts divorce to limited grounds? Finally, there's also the fact that shortly before declaring his Presidential campaign, he ordered that the hard drives of 83 computers and 4 servers be destroyed. Including the server at the state police drug lab. Hmmmmmm....

Use which against him? That he claimed his wife was posting for him, or that he shamefully and illegally claimed to be a Marine Corps officer? Is there a statute of limitations on gross stupidity?

I'd say we'll stop teasing him about it right about the time he admits either offense.

It's also farking hilarious.

I've seen him address the issues about 5 or 6 times in various debates and interviews and he always uses the exact same line. He says he doesn't believe in the young earth story and he doesn't know how old the earth is. He thinks that the 6 days is a metaphor.

Doesn't stop farkers from repeating that he's a young earth creationist, though.
