I don't know about Ron Paul, but I'll bet that a hugely disproportionate number of his fanboys are autistic.

Aspies for Ron Paul! (pops)

I agree with this guy... Also even if he did have Aspergers, many people with it are quite brilliant. You know like that guy that made bittorrent...

What in the he** are you talking about on this entry? Oh my god. Ok, so let's go back through all of Jay Leno's talk shows and compare who looks directly at the host every second. Actually, let's look at the chair configuration, um, it's more facing the audience. But you wouldn't know that, because no one will ever interview you on TV. You wouldn't think that it's hard enough to turn your head to talk to Jay, especially if you might have a neck problem, or have been hauling ass for Months like RP has. and the lights on the stage are too bright to even see the audience.

I've watched him speak a couple times, on TV, he's more clear on things than McCain, Hillary, Far more clear on things than Romney and much less of a c******** than Rudy G. He's a runner, he's been a doctor, in the military, and in the House of Reps for like 20 years. so I think he by far passes the qualifications for social interaction.

But hey, you like your other candidate, that's cool. nevermind that the war is totally f****** the economy, so good luck having a job over the next few years. Maybe we should look forward to substandard discount walmart health care, or maybe we should look forward to being pwned by the chinese.

My niece pulled up to the Ron Paul "Honk If You Speak English" bus and managed to get them to roll down their window so she could ask if any of them spoke the international language of diplomacy or could kindly direct her to a good pastry shop as she wanted to spend her tourist dollars to support the floundering American economy (in French).

She's a neat kid.

The Constitution doesn't say he can't.

Enemabag Jones 2008-01-10 12:37:24 PM
Maybe so. However after some of the reactions to his answers at the (i think) iowa debate and he was not allowed on a later republican debate, can't help think but this could be a form of a smear. Even if it is true.

Durendal: I don't know about Ron Paul, but I'll bet that a hugely disproportionate number of his fanboys are autistic.

That's because of all the candidates he has the best record with regards to issues important to autistic people and their families. Or were you just being an uninformed jerk?

Saiga410 2008-01-10 12:40:15 PM
I can see it. I cannot see how that is a hit against him though. I have known a few people that have asbergers, and they are some of the most intelegent people I have met. They might not be some of the most social people but they are great thinkers.

One problem though is when they get stuck on a problem and that final key part just will not fall. They get locked up like the blue screen of death.

Durendal: I'll let you know when there's one douche and one turd to choose from.

If that's the case, than I wouldn't go around calling people taking part in the process "fanboys." People can vote or not vote. If someone got up in your crawl about not voting, they would be out of line... just like you getting on someone else for their choice when you don't even have one yourself.

I was asking because there is quite a difference between:

1. Attacking a candidate or supporter of one because you are supporting another candidate.

-VS-

2. Attacking a candidate or supporter when you have nothing better to offer yourself.

This was talked about a little early on. In terms of his record in Congress, etc. He was always pretty good with autistic related issues. I THINK Edwards came in next.

But then you have idiots who think autism=tard=easy Ron Paul joke while missing the real connection altogether.

Sgt. Pepper 2008-01-10 12:45:09 PM
Autism is not mentioned in the US Constitution, therefore Ron Paul is not autistic.

Fart_Machine 2008-01-10 12:46:13 PM
It's been speculated that Einstein and Jefferson possibly had Asperger's Syndrome as well so I'm not sure what was the point here.

Or are we looking for another excuse to make "hur hur hur Rainman" jokes?

In all seriousness, this reasoning seems really broken to me. You're basically saying that regardless of Durendal's substantive complaints about Paul's platform, he can't voice them unless there's a competing platform he likes better.

It's like saying you're not allowed to say AIDS sucks unless you admit you'd rather have Syphilis or the Herp. It could well be that Paul and all the other candidates suck; why should I not then voice my opinion that Paul sucks?

Link (new window)

Fanboy (sometimes spelt fanboi) is a pejorative term used to describe an individual who is utterly devoted to a single fannish subject, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession. Fanboys remain loyal to their particular obsession, disregarding any factors (often including logic) that differ from their point of view.

You are saying there aren't Ron Paul fanboys?

randomjsa 2008-01-10 12:52:36 PM
Ron Paul is many things: idiot, fool, misguided, but he is of sound mind and body.

Ron Paul still leads in delegates over Rudy.

Just like any other wide-spread condition they have issues that become political ones. Generally related to the health care situation but focusing on the special problems of autistic people (most often kids). A lot of autistic kids also need certain programs in schools, etc. Autismvox.net has a whole page on the political issues and their evaluation of the candidates on them. Other autism websites have similar pages.

Congress considers literally thousands of bills each session. Now, assume you have a copy of every bill, and accidentally drop them on the chamber floor.

Paul could tell you exactly how many bills you dropped.

/on a more serious note, I actually like his position on many issues.

He was definitely a spaz of some kind as a kid. He still is. Watching him speak is just ... hard.

But Paul is opposed to any socialized health care or education, no? I guess that'll give autistic kids the freedom to pay for whatever special programs they need, assuming they can afford them... That doesn't really strike me as a hit out of the park, but I'll check out that website.

How do they like him? If he is true to his platform wouldn't he be leaving it up to the states to take care of the autistic people?

I know, talking about things like the trillions we're in debt, returning to sound currency, ending our horrible foreign policies... makes your brain hurt.

It's so much easier just to listen to someone shout "Hope! Hope! Change!" over and over again.

KrispyKringle 2008-01-10 01:02:08 PM
Hank Rearden: returning to sound currency

I know I say this in every Ron Paul thread, but can I just state, once again, that far from being the clear argument Paul makes it out to be, gold buggery (get it?) is at best fringe economics. Paul may think that all we need to do to "fix" the US economy is destroy the Fed, but then again fundie Christians think all we need to do is accept Jesus.

Both propositions are based on faith.

KrispyKringle 2008-01-10 01:04:48 PM
groovyjman21: Asperger's is a fraud perpetrated by feminists who are jealous that men are much smarter than them.

Honestly, dude, what have I told you before about being subtle? Nobody is dumb enough to bite.

I would have led with something like, "Asperger's is just another example of the medicalization of social ineptitude, promoted by nerds who want an excuse for their lack of social skills." Something like that. After people bite, you start with the feminist talk.

LocalCynic 2008-01-10 01:05:04 PM
Wow, making fun of autistic people. Way to stay classy.

MindStalker 2008-01-10 01:05:56 PM
Harry Pooter: Which is the more liberal state, the one that Obama wins in or the one that Hillary wins in? I would say NH is simply more intellectually lazy than anything, yea that often comes across as liberal, but it isn't :)

NH has been labeled as very "independant" free thinkers, but this election has proven with the voting for McCain (most anti-war republicans voted for Mr. lets say there 100+ years according to exit-polls) and Hillary, they have shown themselves to be anything but.

It is not his measage that is hard to stand. It is his hurky jerky delivery (coupled with his high voice) that is painful.
