Not a valid comparison. For one thing Neil has actual talent.

Listening to Neil Young's singing is the same as listening to onions being grated on a box grater.

Also of note: this is the 1st song on the 2nd disc of his DECADE Greatest Hits.

He had already written Down By The River, Cinnamon Girl, and his Buffalo Springfield & CSN&Y hits

Admittedly, that was a bit harsh on my part. But, I really don't think he's much of singer or musician. He's a good lyricist though.

A great song by a great artist.

Awesome. But most songwriters peak in their mid to late 20s. There are exceptions, but only to prove the rule...

No one would sign Neil Young to a record deal today.
He doesn't lead a double life as a High School student by day and a Rock Star at night.

Really, not a fair comparison. Neil Young is an artist--Britney is and always was an entertainer.

I've seen about 37 references to "Old Man" in headlines for the past month. Why all of a sudden?

you're probably getting old and just noticing the references more LOL.

He wrote Sugar Mountain at age 19- this was AFTER leaving Buffalo Springfield.

Dude, he's Canadian. We once gave Leonard Cohen a "Male Vocalist of the Year" award, for which even he was surprised. "Only in Canada could somebody with a voice like mine win 'Vocalist of the Year'." he said.

Now, having said that, I've seen Neil live, and he blew the doors off the place.

I never knew that was about a caretaker of a ranch he bought. I'd always assumed it was about his father or something. Learn something new every day.

I concur. I've saw his total acoustic show back in the 90's. A reunion with Crazy Horse, and the Greendale tour. Even though the Greendale tour was kinda weird, all three of these shows left me in a state of awe. Neil Young is legendary.

If you get a chance, and haven't heard it, listen to "After the Garden is Gone", off of "Living With War", and "Be the Rain" off of the Greendale album. Awesome song writing.

I was at his dad's funeral a couple of years ago. He got so choked up that he couldn't speak, picked up a guitar and said "I can't talk but I can do this," and played a couple of songs in the funeral chapel. It still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up thinking about it - he never had what you'd call a classic voice, but the man can sing.

Other interesting thing was he also had his profoundly disabled son there in a motorized chair, and he and his wife looked after the young man themselves - no nurses or minders, even though he could afford them.

Neil's one of the best writers of his generation. Writingwise, Brit has trouble endorsing checks. No comparison.

Chrome Dreams II came out last October. Sounds just like he always has. I'm pretty sure it won't be his last either.

I adore Neil Young. His voice, his playing, his songwriting...all of it. One of my all-time favorites. If you can't get into stuff like After the Gold Rush and Harvest, well...I can't even begin to relate to that.

Neil Young; writing boring music with interesting lyrics since before the invention of shampoo.

T.rex 2008-01-10 12:16:57 PM
you sure about that subby? The lyrics go: "24 and there's so much more", so i had assumed he was 24 when he wrote it.

El Chode [TotalFark] 2008-01-10 12:18:02 PM
Neil Young is probably one of the most influential artists in music today, no matter what you think. He's responsible for the rise of 90s grunge and we probably wouldn't have a lot of the indie kings without him. Pavement learned that you don't have to be a singer to sing, My Morning Jacket and Wilco learned you can mix country with rock and not be a crossover, and Built to Spill learned that you can experiment in different styles and make a falsetto still work, all while being a masterful guitarist.

I thought the same thing....

Greta artist though. And an incredible song.

You really are insane in your 20s, especially when you consider 24 as being old.

Probably because "26 and your wife jogs dicks" doesn't have the same ring.

This might be a new one for you.

Lots of people link to the same SNL show's performance of "Rocking in the Free World," but for some reason, "No More" blew my mind.

Neil Young rocks the fark out of you.

Obligatory Young & Pearl Jam Rockin' in the Free World

Lt. Col. Angus 2008-01-10 04:27:20 PM
I was 16. I was a huge Pearl Jam fan. (Although, it was a LOT harder to find non-mainstream releases pre-internet, I still managed to find a couple of concerts, so I knew they played a couple NY songs.) Still a huge PJ fan, FWIW.

Like most teenagers, I hated my dad. Of course my pops was a raging, abusive alcoholic, so I had my reasons.

My dad liked Neil Young, and therefore, I hated him. Old people music, I thought.

I still remember forcing my parents to sit through the VMAs in 1993, (only TV in the house... Grew up po'...) so I could see Pearl Jam.

Needless to say, we both perked up when Uncle Neil came out and played Rockin' In the Free World with Pearl Jam.

Neil was cool. At least for that night. One of the few nights I can ever remember me and pops being on the same page. Even if only for those five minutes.

Pops died a few years later.

I'm 31 now. As my musical tastes expanded through early adulthood, I started digging back, and over the years, I've slowly acquired almost all of the stuff that the Godfather of Grunge put out.

I really never have missed my dad much, but when I hear that song, it takes me back there.

Old man, take a look at my life... Indeed.

As was posted earlier he has a disable son. His son loves toy trains. As birthday gift he bought the Lionel Toy train company for him. Unlike other famous people who shun there kids who don't even have a disability. Neil Young makes it a point to be a part of his sons life. I also saw him during the Crazy Horse reunion. He is an incredible artist and a good man at that

Nope, but we were in the same line of work.

His dad died here and I went undercover to the funeral. Afterwards I went up, stuck out my hand and said, "i'm 40below, I'm doing what your dad did every day of his working life, try to do justice to the event I'm assigned to." He looked at me funny then got it and we talked for about 10 minutes; he sent me a letter saying he liked the story later.

T.rex 2008-01-10 09:08:28 PM
to be fair, Neil Young didn't have paparazzi following him around every second. That would drive any one of us here, totally batshiat crazy.
