Why is he shaking his head?

Does he disagree?

Yup. Figured it was Vic. All technique, no feeling. =/

I like Vic. A little partial to Marcus Miller myself.

I can't stand Woot's tone. Sounds like a fart every pluck/slap/pop.

Please just give me some Jaco and the latest pair of speakers I built (damn I shouldn't have sold them) and that's my idea of some good downtime to listen to a bass master. Vic is fine but after awhile his tone just gets on my nerves.

i don't like his tone either, but there is NO WAY you can accuse wooten of not having feeling.

Headcheese 2008-01-10 07:18:52 AM
First I've heard of him. Poking around the related links in youtube I found these links from live shows that I can relate to a bit more:

Nobody hates a bass solo more than I do, but how can you hate Victor? Not my favorite either, but there's no need to be a bass-snob about it.

Ah, a bass solo to start my Thursday. Almost motivated me enough to go to my Theory II Class today.

/One week into spring semester, and I'm already ready to kill myself

I still prefer his Amazing Grace rendition more than the stuff poste d so far:

(not a roll)

There's some other stuff in there too, but about halfway the song really starts.

/bonus is a random white dude dancing

Any of you musical minded people know if that is a Conklin bass? Looks very similar to one a friend of mine has.

That's Vic's brother playing guitar on the second vid. I picked up the habit of keeping a sweatband on my guitar neck from him.

I'll see your Wooten and raise you a Brian Bromberg:

Yes, his upright tone sounds like spastic rubber-bands from hell in this video, but live? dizz-ayumn!

It's a Fodera, his signature model to be exact.

there is nothing more insipid than a bass solo, especially one without structure, melody or soul

This base solo sure hurts...

/primarily because he plays it with his forehead
//not a venom fan

Massa Damnata 2008-01-10 04:17:09 PM
ah...incase your clicking the venom link...head smash is at 5:25 so you don't need to sit through it.

Spot on. Usually people assume I haven't listened to him very much, but that's not so. Seen the Bela. Seen the Vic. I love and play the bass. Vic is the most boring cheesy crap that is simultaneously hailed as genius. No thanks.

craigdamage 2008-01-10 07:49:24 PM
Dreadful tone.

No feeling.

Never pedals or lets any of his notes sustain.

All attack with no sustain.

I forgot all of his lines the instant they were over.

If I played like him I would be fired from my current band instantly.
(If I COULD play like him I admit I would probably join a fusion/jazz band on the side but I would restrain myself better than him)

ekdikeo4 2008-01-10 09:58:42 PM
Sounds like he mashed assloads of Robert Trujillo bits and pieces together.

Arbitrator 2008-01-11 02:22:25 AM
I like Wooten's technique but I admit I've never really 'understood' the lines he plays. They don't speak to me very much.

To be honest, neither do most other bassists' lines. They might as well be structureless noodling. So I'm just reduced to being impressed by technique...
