Annoyed by nosy evangelical Christians who really ought to be spending more time praying in their closets where only God and the baby Jeebus can see them, perhaps. The regular Christians I'm cool with.

Anyway, I like the idea of an afterlife in Hell. It'll be full of my kind of people. You just know that some of the more bastardly Popes could throw a good party, after all.

I wish this were true, but SUBBY FAILS.

FTFA:
A new survey of U.S. adults who don't go to church, even on holidays finds... 44% agree with the statement "Christians get on my nerves."

So, it is 44% of the 22% that never go to church, which means its only 9.6% of the total population.

Dude, when I get there, I intend to reform the place. A few heat engines, some climate control, and it's a resort. Hot springs baths, succubi/incubi/whatever for massages, massive orgies with no fear of STDs, the most decadent and unhealthy foods you ever ate... it'll be awesome.

Of course, first this means getting this Lucifer fella to retire. Might take some convincing. But it'll sure make Armageddon awkward for the other team. People get Raptured, everyone gets ready for Hell's gates to open and cause Bad Things all over... and the demons simply don't show up.

Since I'll be ruling Hell at that point, God will come to me claiming breach of contract. At that point I will remind him that I have all the lawyers.

A new survey of U.S. adults who don't go to church, even on holidays, finds 72% say "God, a higher or supreme being, actually exists." But just as many (72%) also say the church is "full of hypocrites."

Indeed, 44% agree with the statement "Christians get on my nerves."

Just a few contextual facts before we set out for Gomorrah.

Alright Jim, floor it.

Article will not load. I still like that Twilight Zone episode that has Hal Linden (as a hippie) in Hell watching a slide show of an old couple and he ask if this place is hell and another one (square) watching the slide show thinks it's heaven. That is my favorite episode.

Oh, and on the off chance Bevets might show up, I'm repeating in advance my request that he indicate which, if any, of my Articles Of Faith he doesn't agree with:
1) The principles of Propositional Calculus;
2) The Zermelo-Fraenkel Axioms of Set Theory (Axiom of Choice aside; take it or leave it as you prefer);
3) The Objective Principle, that what we Observe via our senses bears some relation to the Universe Observed;
4) The Strong Church-Turing Universe Thesis - that the Universe is not a Hypercomputer, but only Turing-machine or less complex.
Sorry to bother the rest of y'all by waving my faith about. =)

He's actually tried to make a coherent point now and then of late, rather than merely quote-trolling, and does turn up every now and again in threads founded on religion but not evolution.

FTFA: Just 52% agree on the essential Christian belief that "Jesus died and came back to life."

And 61% say the God of the Bible is "no different from the gods or spiritual beings depicted by world religions such as Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc.," although Buddhist philosophy has no god and Hindus worship many.

Whole lot of stupid there.

Christians amuse me, until they get political. That's why we have separation of church and state.

Boy, everyone is missing the point here.

Once again, ALL of the percentages in this article are based on surveys of people who DO NOT REGULARLY GO TO CHURCH. Not of all Americans, and not Christians as a whole (although certainly some people who don't regularly go to church would probably still call themselves "Christian").

My guess is the roughly 10% of the U.S. who would say they are "Annoyed by Christians" are outwardly atheist.

Indeed, 44% agree with the statement "Christians get on my nerves."...

More than one in five (22%) of Americans say they never go to church, the highest ever recorded by the General Social Survey, conducted every two years by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago. In 2004, the percentage was 17%.

Many of the unchurched are shaky on Christian basics, says LifeWay Research director Ed Stetzer.

Just 52% agree on the essential Christian belief that "Jesus died and came back to life."

22% of 44% would be 10% of the total population.

abb3w [TotalFark] 2008-01-09 06:11:03 PM
Bevets: 22% of 44% would be 10% of the total population.

Hah; called it... not that he responded to my request.

But anyway, um, no. The survey selected only the "unchurched" defined as "has not been to church within the past six months", and does not indicate the fraction of the population actually qualifying as "unchurched". The 22% "never go to church" fraction is actually of the "unchurched", from what the PowerPoint data suggests. Since I doubt the fraction of the "unchurched" is as high as 44% of the whole US population, it's actually probably less than 10%. However, I could be wrong; GIGO.

Heck, I go to Church fairly regularly for the holidays. Religion is effective for inculcating basic morals into young minds, and doing so reduces the number of family arguments.

Speaking for myself, I don't consider most forms of Christianity offensive; I just think they're wrong.

/Islam... is a different matter

isn't there a saying? something about the worst enemies of the church are the christians?

as a non-denominational, not really currently practicing recovering southern baptist, i can say that christians are, hands down, the one thing that drove me out of church.

and, funny enough, the one thing that drove me out of the republican party.

i still believe in god, and i still believe in conservatism. i just can't stand self-righteous narrowmindedness.

What's always amused me is that most American Christians, if they actually encountered Jesus - a liberal, socialist, anti-business, pro-sex Jew who hung around with hookers and lepers - would beat his queer loving, unpatriotic, hippy ass to the ground if not re-crucify him all over again.

In the least he'd be sent to Guantanamo or otherwise face "rendition" of some sort.

How on Earth did they get so far off message?

Maybe he has come back, taken a look around at how his message has been perverted and gotten the hell out of town as anybody as intolerant and backwards thinking as most fundies are just don't deserve to be saved.

P.S.

How do you think these folks will feel about heaven once they get there and realize that the whole joint is strictly Kosher?

My problems with religion:

-Way to control the populace

-Unrealistic in terms of theories (I'm sure we go somewhere after we die however, it's to be determined if it's Heaven or Hell. I don't think it's either.) But sorry, earth is not only a few thousand years old.

-Many followers are complete nuts.

-Separates people. If religion didn't "exist" humanity would fight much less.

-Gospel music blows.

-Some people try to foist it upon you. Fark off, I believe what I want, and some Jehova's Witness knocking on my door with pamphlets sure the hell isn't going to sway my position.

If I have to go to a full Catholic mass for a friend's wedding do I count as unchurched or not?

I even ate a Jeez-it so I matched all the other bridesmaids, but I'm not Catholic (or even Christian for that matter). It was dry and flavorless. I think the communion wafer should be flavored with something---blood flavored, maybe. It would make it really hit home what you're doing when you eat that thing. Taking part in ritualized human sacrifice and metaphorical cannibalism and all.

I don't give too much credence to surveys about religion (or any subject really). People constantly misrepresent themselves in these things. I know a ton of people that say they are Christian because they grew up celebrating Christmas and Easter, etc. In reality these people have never read the Bible, and haven't stepped foot in a Church in years. Nevertheless, they will still say they are Christian when asked to identify a religious affiliation.
