Probably sitting on a pole somewhere.

Maybe they're in Marcy Playground.

Superdrag was awesome back in the day. My senior year in high school we used to do a cover of this song...pretty horribly I might add. Link (new window)

Sweet.

Saw Superdrag in '97

Heard their lead singer turned all Christian though.

Well, Harvey's been a little under the weather lately.

He's not really sick, but he's not well either.

Harvey Danger - greatest freaking one hit wonder ever!

Ahh, forgettable one hit wonders from a largely forgettable era.

Faux Shizzle 2008-01-08 04:01:55 PM
Apparently, they cut off his legs. Now he's an amputee.
/Goddamn you!

naveline: Ahh, forgettable one hit wonders from a largely forgettable era.

Do you have any idea what you're talking about?

Nada Surf and Superdrag have both put out 2 or 3 exceptional records which rise well above the landscape of alt-rock crap.

That said, I'm probably biased towards the mid-90s alt-rock era, Verve Pipe, Matthew Sweet, Goo Goo Dolls, Belly, Catherine Wheel, etc. because I was in college at the time. Still all that stuff still sounds way better to me than any current bands.

Harvey Danger will be playing at Ships and Dip III in Miami on January 27.

Matthew Sweet

Released his best two albums in 1999 and 2004; perfect example of a great singer-songwriter who did his best when everybody stopped looking.

Belly

Ohhhh, Tanya Donnelly. My first girl-singer crush.

The designation "one hit wonder" has no correlation to their actual talent. Going by the definition, Hendrix was a one hit wonder. Don't get offended because you liked some albums that Nada Surf only had one hit, which was primarily the lead singer reading a list from a stupid 1950s book - that's the case.

Nada Surf:
[long stupid recording of teenagers talking]
Blah blah blah blah, I'm popular
Blah blah blah blah, I'm popular
Blah blah blah blah, I'm popular
Blah blah teachers pet, something something.
(not a big fan)

Superdrag:
Who sucked out the feeeeeellllieeaaan???
Who sucked out the feeeeeellllieeaaan???
(loved that song)

I like pretty much anything else I've heard from them too but wasn't that into them.

I kinda liked that Harvey Danger song too. Had a couple other good tracks on that album, too.

Mr. Chainsaw 2008-01-08 04:46:17 PM
Harvey Danger are wonderful. I dare say that Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone? is one of my favorite albums.

Nada Surf has actually put out some really REALLY great pop-rock records- they're on indie tastemaker label Barsuk nowadays. I highly suggest The Weight Is A Gift.

However, I honestly did not know Superdrag were still together.

/waaaayyy too into 90's alt. rock

I'll only go if the band that did "Tubthumping" is there, too. Chimichanga or something. Anyway, they ruled, and I loved them.

Add In Reverse to that list.

I heard he's releasing his new album, Rock Bottom, sometime very soon.

The Glass Dragon 2008-01-08 05:02:55 PM
Ah, misread one of those dates. Looks like you did include In Reverse.

100% Fun is good as well.

Valdes 2008-01-08 05:10:58 PM
Since the first Nada Surf record I owned was from ~2002, is that early-2000s nostalgia?

I would rather listen to Nada Surf than Radiohead (also a one-hit wonder). I even think they are a better band.

a fire, please die in it.

EEEEEEEeeeeee!!!!! Superdrag's post-popular albums were some of the most overlooked gems released. Head Trip in Every Key puts most other indie-pop to shame, and Last Call for Vitriol and In the Valley of Dying Stars were both totally solid albums. Glad to hear they're back together. Hopefully they put out another album.

/Now if I could only get my hands on a copy of Greetings from Tennessee that keeps selling for $150 on eBay.

the 90s music channel from my cable company always plays shiat I have completely forgotten about since the late 90s. Thankfully, they've yet to play Nada Surf. (Who the fark liked that song? Poorman's Weezer...)

Harvey Danger's Free album a few years ago is AMAZING! I cannot get enough of it, even to this day. Too bad he didn't get the attention he deserved on that one.

Yes! That whole album is great but Banditos was the big hit off Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big & Buzzy.

MetalGator: Let me guess, Flagpole Sitta is nowhere to be found on the setlist?

It's on mine!

I love "Happpiness Writes White" from Harvey Danger's free cd. Like playing it on the piano and pretending I can emote.
(Cream & Bastards rise is my favorite track).

And I own mostly everything Marcy Playground/John Wozniak/Zog Bogbean have done. Love them.

nada Surf put out my most unexpectedly favorite albums, let go. Bought it on a whim used after reading a paragraph long review in rolling stone. Some great rainy day music, with some interesting melodies.

lazy correlation. aside from ric ocasek producing albums from both bands, they really dont have too much in common. also, nada surf has gotten better with every album while weezer is just pooping out records that are crappy imitations of what they used to be. also, superdrag has put out some amazing records.

runfaster21 2008-01-09 08:39:41 AM
Yeah, you people hating on Nada Surf really just don't know. The song "Popular" from their first album might not be great and it's understandable if you think they suck if that song is all you know.

But their two most recent albums, "Let Go" and "The Weight is a Gift", are really excellent and nothing to be laughed at. Definitely check them out. I didn't know until reading this link that they've got a new CD coming out in February but I'll buy it immediately without hearing anything off it.

SuburbanCowboy 2008-01-09 10:16:13 AM
If you only get a "nostalgia kick" from Nada Surf, you are totally out of the loop. Their last two albums are absolutely fantastic. I still listen to "Let Go" more than almost any album I own. The Proximity Effect, which was re-issued not too long back, is awesome as well. "Lucky" the new Nada Surf album has leaked, and it is very very good, but perhaps just not as good as the last two.
I saw them do an acoustic set at Mercury Lounge, and it was just great.

Superdrag is still a good band, and so is Harvey Danger. They all had the "unfortunate luck" of having novelty hits, and not having labels demonstrate how good the rest of their tunes were.

Superdrag had a hit? I only remember them because I used to pick up bargain barrel CDs on the off chance there'd be a lost classic in there - so many were, but Superdrag's album wasn't by a long shot. Stilted, mediocre and soulless indie pop. I thought they broke up ten years ago, as I've heard nothing of them since...

the cd you must be referring to would be "regretfully yours." that was their debut cd with their only hit. usually albums like that are found in such bins because people buy it for only one song that usually doesnt represent the band too well. that album is by far my least favorite. i still dont agree with your assessment, but i can see where you could say that. the problem with that and their other mass produced ep is that the songs were recorded on a budget and suffer as a result. elektra only paid to re record one song from the album. if you want to hear good superdrag, try "head trip in every key," and "in the valley of dying stars." if you dont want to hear good superdrag, thats fine, but dont get all rob gordon.
