Most over-rated musician in American History.

Meet me one thread down so you can see some real musical innovation.

Elvis was a musician? Didn't know that. I mean he could play some piano and a little guitar, but if i remember correctly its not as if he really wrote most of his stuff... sweet hair though, really.

It's time to eat fried peanut butter sandwich's and kick ass...and I'm all out of white bread.

Wow. I came here to say how over rated I thought Elvis was and then go hide behind a rock. It's nice to see there are others out there who may think 'Costello' rather than 'Presley' when they hear the name 'Elvis'. His influence is so much larger than his contribution.

So far this thread does not disappoint.

Wow, the hate is strong in this thread. I'm usually not one to defend Elvis, but come on. He may be a musical dwarf compared to, oh, Fleetwood Mac but the guy did what he had to do. Remember the Beatles themselves said there would be no Beatles without Elvis.

Of course, then he spent two decades doing what he didn't have to do (and shouldn't have). Still, he made a crucial contribution to rock 'n' roll.

/that and he was the one who got me into rock (I'm 25)

Quit hatin.

He was a hell of a singer and entertainer.

Elvis overrated? In a lot of ways yeah, but I dare ANYBODY to listen to his stuff on Sun records and tell me it did not rule. Those records were his rather major contribution to rock and roll.

Also, Scotty Moore's guitar playing on those records is godly.

His Sun records are astonishing + his early RCA records, + his gospel records, + his 1968 comeback.

I'm amused by those above who claim he was not a "musician" -- as if the voice were not an instrument. Only Little Richard could top him, and only in up-tempo stuff

I got married on Elvismas (January 8th, 200), and divorced on D-Day (June 6th, 2005). Such sweet memories of my wedding reception as an Elvis impersonator performed 3 songs for us. Even better memories of my divorce as the liberation of my life began!

Definitely agree on his gospel records. I'm a hell-bound, porn-watching, homo-lovin' atheist heathen, but his gospel records make me wanna go to church. Had he never gotten into secular music, he still could've been a legendary gospel singer.

Anybody who denies the man's talent as a performer and a singer needs to watch this and tell me that he didn't have one hell of a soulful voice.

Is that the Peter Green, Bob Welch, blues based, kick ass Fleetwood Mac or the pussy whipped let their wives and girfriends be in the band, Rumours Fleetwood Mac?

/can you tell which on I prefer?

People like to hate on elvis and to be honest I wasnt a big fan till I watched a few of his shows, they seemed perfect and I thought he lip synced them until I listened to them again and realized he was talking in the middle of some of the songs.

Quit possibly the finest voice in rock history and the standard for all singers to come. Great writer? Maybe not, but no one can touch his voice in rock and roll or even pop for that matter.

Also my Grandpas birthday, he woulda been 90.

Elvis, like him or not, allowed rock to become what it is today.

Elvis is the most underrated entertainer in American History. Jeez, sometimes it's just too easy to come into a Fark thread and make the most sense.

I think that if E were here today, he'd probably be more of a gospel singer. Back in the day, he actually tried out as for the Blackwoods, and was rejected because they said it was impossible for him to harmonize because his style was so undisciplined.

Just sayin'...

I think he'd be a contemporary Country style.

Also he would have done a lot more cutting edge movies similar to the Burt Renyolds acting comeback.

I do not believe he's be the Super Star Legend he is today had he not died at 42.

Incidentally, most all of his relatives on his mother's side died in their 40's and 50's of natural causes. His mother died at 46. His father died of heart disease at only 63.
