It's not quite as bad as the M.U.L.E. theme.

lordargent 2008-01-07 01:10:37 PM
I beat portal on friday, I forgot the theme song in like 5 minutes.

This was a triumph.

LarsThorwald [TotalFark] 2008-01-07 01:41:21 PM
That song is actually pretty catchy

emilyek_1 2008-01-07 01:41:41 PM
In a sense it is.

"This was a triumph..." shapes how players feel about Portal itself. GladDos (Valve) manipulates the player as the credits roll.

And the song, because it is truly clever and unusual, is maybe the best thing about the game, truth be told.

It was a nice, unexpected ending of a great, fun game. Worth the price of admission and you get all of HL2 and TF2 as well.

MaxxLarge [TotalFark] 2008-01-07 02:02:54 PM
The closing song from "Max Payne 2" was actually really good, as well. It was called "Late Goodbye" by a band from the Netherlands called Poets of the Fall. Tied in nicely to the abundance of Norse mythology references in that game.

Yeah, I'm a geek. As if I needed to tell you that.

The psychological experiment of Portal's ending credits song is a lie.

my favorite ending credit song was from the original Ninja Gaiden on NES.

I know there is an orchestral version out there, just can't find it

Loved the final battle. GLadDOS's various personality modules were a hoot.

"What's that? What's that? That thing has NUMBERS on it! Oh, you're the lady from the test... hi!"

Best game ending ever. I can't believe the same guy wrote/sings that awful "i feel fantastic" song though.

Satosuke [TotalFark] 2008-01-07 05:24:15 PM
Whoever captured that video clip was using code from Half-Life 2 in the game. There is no HUD or gravity gun in Portal.

sounded like any other indie/silly bad/good rock song to me...

Never played Portal, always wondered what everyone was talking about.

This is disappointing. I don't get it.

greyseal 2008-01-07 09:39:00 PM
It's not that the song is inherently so great (although it is weirdly catchy).

It's the fact that the song is sung by a character from the game, ridiculously funny, and perfectly ties up the game's sense of humor at the end. It reveals more about the character and the company she (?) works for. The song is directly part of the game... not just some tune tacked on at the end to sound good.

It's damn brilliant.

ukiah 2008-01-07 09:45:34 PM
Having never played Portal, let me say that I was thoroughly impressed and immensely enjoyed that. I'm being sincere.

lohphat 2008-01-07 09:48:35 PM
The player's relationship with "GLaDOS" is akin to a passive-aggressive relationship with a psycho girlfriend. "I tried to kill you to show you how much I love you!" Then she timidly goes back into her cave to recharge for the next victim; all in the name of "research".

And there's the loud, hot, squishy, monkey sex which only crazy girlfriends can give you.

/knows too much on the subject...

BadMotivator 2008-01-07 10:33:30 PM
Damned earworm ...

I listened to that bugger once - ONCE! - and I've been humming it for the last 45 minutes.

Thanks, subby ... grumble, grumble

Maybe you should have played the game before watching the end, and then it would have meant something to you.

Maybe.

Anyway, best ending credits ever. I cannot wait for some other bands to do a cover of this song.

Anyone out there play the Activision game "Portal" from the 1980s--an "interactive novel"? It's kind of trippy and there's a Web version available.
