Atypical Person Reading Fark [TotalFark] 2008-01-06 06:49:02 PM
Outgoing tide rule usually only applies on beaches where there's a steep slope (read cliff) and the water gets sucked fast and hard down into the depths beyond the cliff.

In that case, even the best swimmers can be swept out. Not that these people were good swimmers.

I had two horses, so I spent six years in college - and then some more, but that was more because of the llamas.

2 meter New Zealand swell and associated tidal currents might be different than the conditions on your night swims and an outgoing tide at the opening of a bay or inlet can create very strong currents moving out to sea.

I dont know much about the sea, but it sounds like there was weather coming in since they mentioned two meter swells.

I wouldnt sail in those conditions for recreation, and certainly would not swim.

quickdraw: Gimme a break - like none of you have ever done something drunk and stupid.

qft.

i'll step up.
when i was about 19 i went out on the nj shore in the wee hours of the morning half-tripping and in my jeans. stupid stupid stupid. current carried me off my feet in about 7 minutes, about 40 yards out.

i actually reached a point beyond panic and into acceptance, spread my arms, put my face in the water and prepared to die...

then one swell carried me face first into a thin, mollusk-encrusted reef. my arms grabbed onto that thing before i even thought "hey!" i'm pretty sure, that far out, it was the end of it, or near to it. it's amazing with the tide that high it was even that close to the surface. i crawled/was carried over that reef back to shore hand over hand, with several stops to catch my breath along the way.

i wish i could say it was a particularly life-changng experience, but no. i went on to do many, many more stupid things.

/where is your darwin now?

Okay, I've never swum at a cliff. I have been swimming at an inlet, have caught a couple of rip currents.. no big deal if you're aware and know to swim parallel to the beach.

But whoever said nightswimming deserves a glub glub.. you're missing out one one of life's greatest pleasures.. skinnydipping in the ocean at night is great.

Tillmaster 2008-01-06 11:27:39 PM
You've gotta love the plain way of speaking they have in the Antipodes.

A colleague of mine was sleeping across four seats in the back of a Qantas jet from the UK to Australia. He ignored several warnings to fasten at least one seat belt, and was taken unawares when the plane hit some turbulence. He floated up through the roof and sustained a fair amount of scalp damage, then fell bak onto the seats and broke his arm.

The flight attendants were justifiable completely unsympathetic. The term 'stupid bastard' may have been used.

The idiots in the article were bloody lucky.
