As much as I would like to call Huckabee dumb for this... he has shown a sense of humor and likely did this with full knowledge that Canada does not have a National Igloo.

Though the other Arkansas citizens did not speak well for the people who elected him.

I'm sure his campaign advisors knew that this video existed. I wonder how they prepare for something like this surfacing? Must be a nightmare to run a political campaign in the You Tube age.

They pulled the same thing on G.W. Bush back in 2000 i think - 'Prime Minister Poutine' - how do these clowns get close to American politicos to embarrass them like this? They bribe the secret service or something?

You can get most people to go along with anything on camera.

And that's the best they can do?

That was in the same special that the linked video is from. It's Rick Mercer's "Talking to Americans," it's hilarious and depressing at the same time, and I'm pretty sure a lot of people around here have long since seen it, as it was out seven years ago.

George Bush might wear a cowboy hat, drive a pickup and say "noo-cle-ar", but don't be fooled. He was born in CT. That's as far from Texas as I can imagine.

Exactly. The "National Igloo" is a minor entry of the great list of scams that Huckabee has fallen for.

I'll just repost the same thing I posted in the last thread about this video a few weeks ago.

Rick Mercer's shtick just isn't funny.

Yes, everybody laugh at the ignorant Americans. But the fact is, if you corner the average man-on-the-street, in any country, and stick him in front of a TV camera, you can get him to say some stupid things. Jay Leno has known this for a long time, with his "Jaywalking" segment, and Leno isn't funny either.

How many people actually knew something and provided a rational response? Doesn't matter, they're all edited out. They don't fit the "dumb American" stereotype that Mercer is trying to propagate.

In any case, don't you think it's unreasonable to expect the average American to have much knowledge of Canada, considering that the average Canadian lacks basic knowledge of his own country?

brantgoose 2008-01-06 05:35:44 PM
Getting an American to say something stupid by pointing a camera at him is shooting fish in a barrel (Jaywalking with Jay Leno). Getting a politician to say something stupid by pointing a camera at him is shooting a barrel of fish.

I don't know, Huck is on for about ten seconds at the very end so you can't really tell.

The first woman on the video is biting her lip to hold back laughter at his ridiculous story.

It could be like Buchannan and Newt on Ali G. They were clearly in on the joke.

That's what I have to say. Mike Huckabee's policy positions border on moronic, but he does have a decent sense of humor and he's not an idiot.

Also, this is old. Huckabee hasn't even been Governor since Jan. 2007. This was around well before then.

PopeSchmope 2008-01-06 06:14:58 PM
Ah yes, "Talking to Americans". I've seen a couple of these. Pretty funny. Of course, all it proves is that Americans don't care about Canadians. Hope you're all happy about that.

Good point. I would've congratulated Canada on it's "National Igloo" as well, just to be a dick.

If it was in the Secret Service's job description to keep politicians from making fools of themselves, they'd need to hire a lot more staff.

Did it ever occur to either of you that the reason might just be because there are a lot of ignorant people in this world?
Remember, we are talking about developed nations that have educational systems, now take that thought and wonder what it might be like in rural Iraq.

Considering that they probably spent several hours out shooting, finding enough idiots to make a two and half minute clip doesn't really mean much of anything, statistically. Particularly since they're asking a question that many people would see as a joke and play along with, even if they knew the Canadian parliament didn't meet in an igloo.

Jaywalking works the same way. It doesn't say much of anything about the average person's intelligence, since they deliberately pick the idiots to show on TV.

1 in 5 Americans can't locate this country on an unlabeled map. Even more have been polled as incapable of locating Iraq or Iran.

I'd say a lot more folks in this nation qualify as "idiots" than you might imagine.

I have no doubt there are plenty of idiots (thanks, government schools!), I just think pointing to this type of video as proof of that is meaningless.

Rick Mercer spoke about this several years ago. Huckabee fell for it--he only asked, "this igloo isn't controversial, is it?"

Mercer also said that Huck was very personable and gracious and even invited him for dinner with his family that evening. Mercer and his crew had to sneak out of town.

I could believe that. It's generally a proven fact the people forget any information they don't use regularly, either in their job or because they find the subject interesting. Doesn't really prove that Huckabee's an idiot, and I'm no fan of Huckabee.

that video only proves americans dont care about cannada and really didn't care to talk to that canadian. if it were me and someone was going on about some boring capital and igloo and global warming, i would tune out and just say ya over and over so i dont come off as an asshole. none of those people cared about the conversation. if an american went up and started talking about our national waterslide, some of the uninterested people videotaped could be used for a similar video. and we would all laugh and the dumb canadian who doesn't know there is no wuch thing as a national waterslide. GET OVER YOURSELF, CANADA!

Nastyboy 2008-01-06 07:43:44 PM
The CBC ran a documentary a few times where a phony news crew asked Torontonians what they thought about a fictitional "Silverfish" dispute between Canada and the US. The joke of course being that the Silverfish is a disgusting bug akin to the cockroach and there was no fishing dispute going on of any kind with the USA.

The dumbfarks stopped and interviewed got all serious and started talking about how the US was out of it's territorial waters and Canada was obviously in the right...blah ...blah ...blah. It was pretty frikin' funny.

There are idiots on both sides of the border. Toronto especially.

The Talking To Americans segment was often very funny, but a National Igloo really isn't farfetched enough to make Huckabee or anybody else seem stupid for believing it.

There were much funnier episodes, I thought.

Considering all the stupid crap we have, like designated state rocks, a designated "National Igloo" up in the Arctic certainly isn't that far fetched for a person with only a passing knowledge of Canada. The bit about Parliament meeting in it was, though.
