Wow--1979 had some really terrible music. I suspect it was the tipping point for the "Disco Sucks!" movement.

I agree, and despite that, still farking love this song

It's even funnier without sound. They look like deranged mimes.

The best part is in the middle where John Stewart is trying to get himself and his guitar past all those dancers while trying to hold back all that dammit...I was in the Kingston Trio...I can't believe this shiat...farking dancers...

I loved SG as a kid, but I don't remember them being so darned SLEAZY...seriously, that was some hot throbbin' "Hot Stuff" action. We used to all dance around the living room to this Top 40 nastiness...back when I was forced to wear Dickies and there was absolutely nothing cool about them.

/Lawn.
//Get off.

And THIS.

My main memory of Solid Gold is Dionne Warwick singing Mr. Mister's "Kyrie" while some chick in hot pants writhed around. That even embarassed me at 9.

You hit the nail on the head. I think they made shows like Space Ghost and Curb Your Enthusiasm for those of us who survived the Magnificent Awkwardness that was a childhood such as this.

Dionne Warwick was hypnotizingly embarassing. Do you remember that little swagger she had? That laid back thing she had going on? And those big old lightly tinted mom glasses?

Dancers? Disco? Oh...sorry, I didn't notice anything but that beautiful Les Paul Custom. Tastey.

This.

Especially once they get to the Eagles song.

Then-bf's dad used to loooooooooove to watch them. He'd even put up with that nasty rock music to watch the girls gyrate.

Is it me, or does that "Gold" song have Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks all over it? Meh, music from my glorious past....

NakedReporta [TotalFark] 2008-01-06 11:55:19 PM
While we're on the subject of bad '70s variety TV, is that the Pink Lady and Jeff soundstage they're performing on? Sure looks like it.

Dear Jerk 2008-01-07 12:07:53 AM
If I could find somebody with a supply of 1979, he would eventually have all my money.

"In 1979, both are faster."

doctorwormwood 2008-01-07 12:52:29 AM
man the same assholes responsible for this crap must be responsible for our crappy musicians these days, I wonder if they just we're locked in closets and beaten with hoses by the sane people through the 90's

doctorwormwood 2008-01-07 12:56:02 AM
dance routines and jazz dancing have got to be one of the most idiotic forms of entertainment ever.. ooo look at me I memorized a bunch of movements and make stupid faces while I try and look hot.. wtf?

kelmeister 2008-01-07 01:03:09 AM
Now I know the name of that Herb Albert song. Thanks, Solid Gold!

Possibly the worst idea evar for a TV show.

thoughtwired 2008-01-07 02:49:17 AM
the eternal 70's conundrum for every guy: this music sucks, but these girls are limber.

You'd have done it too. ahh disco.

You know, since there's no writers right now, why not bring back solid gold? Don't need a script to have a half hour of girls in glitter and body stockings writhing sensually to top 40 music. I got a mute key on the remote. Cmon VH1. Its not like you have any credibility anyway.

frostus [TotalFark] 2008-01-07 03:16:38 AM
I'll have to show this to my daughter because it'll make her gag. That's the year she was born.

Didn't just about everything in the late 70's?

Richiedude 2008-01-07 09:42:47 AM
I watched Solid Gold back then - thought it was real cheesy. Oh well - it made the list: Worst Music Shows

spittman 2008-01-07 11:56:06 AM
I remember being 5 years old and dancing on the couch when Solid Gold was on. That was pretty much the sum total of my dancing career. Am I the only one who is creeped out by a LOT of 70's music. Especially disco. It literally makes me uncomfortable and nervous.

Wow--1979 had some really terrible music.

Have you seen Billboard's Top 100 of 2007? Sweet Zombie Jesus its nothing but wall-to-wall crap.

Toriko [TotalFark] 2008-01-08 01:32:14 AM
huchipapa Possibly because Nicks collaborated with Stewart on that album.

WHAT WAS NUMBER ONE?

Stupid clip gets all the way up to number 2 then goes to the credits. ARRGH!
