Is the family going to sue the skateboard maker for lack of brakes, or the city for an unsafe intersection, and/or the 71 year old driver for not driving fast enough, which if he did, the car would have long been gone before Avril Lavigne's boyfriend reached the intersection.

It's hard for us out in the Western Frontierlands to make sense of where these events are occurring. So I clicked on 'State News' for that newspaper, and there are stories from both Ohio and Kentucky. Does this indicate a future merger of those two states?

And, one can still be a Farker and be surprised to read of not only a skateboarder flattened, but 4 grown men dead (flipping their car) and a 9 year old killed while snowmobiling, a woman using her 1 year old toddler as a bullet shield, and the aftermath of the wrongway driver who killed, what, five people? Busy week for the reaper in Ohio (I think).

oh, and the sad story about the dead horses...

jjorsett: Who didn't do equally stupid stuff like this when they were 14? I'm amazed I survived childhood.

I was a little crazy, but not downright idiotic like this kid. Reminds me when last summer I was driving and there were two future mensa members that I almost killed. They were wearing dark colors through an area with a lot of cover, and the speed limit is 40 on the road. They decided to just cross the street right behind a tree. I slammed on the brakes and honked and the kids started yelling some dumb crap at me. Looking back, I should've just hit 'em.

/not gonna biatch about not wearing helmets, not many do around here. besides, you need something worth protecting if you wear one. Obviously these two precious snowflakes did not have this concern.

Some survive childhood, some don't. We don't have 10 kids too often anymore just to make sure that the family tree keeps branching. I guess it's an example of human deforestation.

I am utterly shocked that someone invoked Darwin in an appropriate circumstance. Usually it's a 60 year old white trash broad with 18 kids who all have grandchildren already and someone says "Today's Darwin blah blah old biatch DIAF, kittens dying with mugshot goodness. News: She broke her neck after slipping on a hamburger patty. Fark: At taco bell. " etc.

We used to go down a hill and across a 4 lane highway nonstop.

We are still here.

Of course the main differences are that we had brakes and we did it in the daytime..

I, and my buddies, did some REALLY dare-devilish (read stupid) things at 14 years old as well; with several close calls by myself and others. There've been times I wondered how I survived (two friends died.)

However... we did NOT challenge cross-traffic wearing nothing more than a skateboard...

/thoughts still go out to parents

I don't know about that. When I was 15 two of my classmates were killed.

One was murdered by his father. That was a tragedy, people mourned and cried for weeks.

Another was killed doing something very stupid, he tried a backflip from a 30' cliff into a river without checking the water below. He struck his head and was dead before the paramedics arrived. His friends and family were sad, but most other people were of the opinion that it was a teenager doing something stupid, and moved on.

A teenager isn't an infant or toddler. They may lack maturity and judgement, but at that age they should be bright enough to not do things that are -that- stupid. Is it a bit sad? Yes. Is it an actual tragedy? No.

Except that if they can't understand concepts like "stop means stop" and car + speed + unprotected body = badbadbadbadbad by that age, then we needed them weeded out of our gene pool. Seriously. He was 14, not 4, and he lived in Cincinnati which isn't some quiet little 1-stop light town by any means. I feel bad for the parents but not the human race.

Years ago I was skating down an unfamiliar steep hill. I finally realized it took a sharp right or continued onto a major roadway.
Needless to say I tried the hard right and lost most the skin on the right side of my body.

Problem is though, they are aware of what they're doing. A quick search on YouTube can provide 100's of videos of teenages doing stunts like this. It's up to the parent to enforce that these things are deadly.
