Some police officers shouldn't be allowed to carry loaded guns, for their own protection.

If you're holding the barrel instead of the grip, I'd imagine it'd be pretty easy to hit your foot when you're aiming in front of you.

Yep, just remember 40 hours (5 days, 2 on the range) of firearm instruction at your local community college is about all you need to be a police officer in many U.S. states.

/this guy must have been sick one of those range days.

I'm glad they included a picture of a gun in that story. Being from the nanny state I had no idea what someone would use to shoot themselves...

That is so true. My wife is the poster child for thinking someone will invade the houseand/or kidnap the kids. We live in a gated community with an alarm system. What state? Yes, that's right, Florida. Drives me bat shiat.

It's interesting that there is no mention of the dogs actually attacking, and they ended up not needing to be shot, but they were taken by animal control anyways.

Makes me wonder why they went to shoot the dog in the first place, if they didn't need to be shot in the end.

So, did the suspect get charged for the officer's injuries? They wouldn't have occurred if they hadn't had to enter that house and encountered a pit bull. Sounds reasonably foreseeable that a cop would shoot himself while trying to dispatch your dog.

Coming from a family of crooked cops, I'll be the first to question one's honesty. However, most of them are pretty good shots. If I had to guess, the dog was already on him. From either a standing or supine position, depending on the nature of the attack, I can see firing at the animal towards your feet and not really giving a shiat what was behind the dog -- in this case, his foot.

The owners sic'ed the dogs on the police. It wasn't a case of the dogs getting upset when the police officer entered.

If you don't think the police was justified in firing a shot at a dog that was just sent to attack them, It will become painfully clear that you just don't like cops.

Maybe he put up his foot to block the dog, then sort of forgot about that when he shot?

Or discharged his firearm trying to get it out of the twist holster and made up the dog part later...

TFA says a pit bull was "let loose on them" when they entered the home. Now I don't know about you guys, but my pit bull isn't tied up inside my house. If someone comes in then the dog is already loose. Doesn't mean I sicced my dog on someone, just that she was going to see who came in the door. Too bad the cop didn't shoot himself in the kidney.

almostsane 2008-01-06 10:31:06 AM
Bunnyhat The article says that a pit bull was loose: nowhere does it say that anyone "sicced" him/her on the cops.

Your perception is correct, though: after living through 12 years of hell because the local cops would rather collect their payoffs than arrest a violent drug dealer, a girl is dead, the crooked cops are finally gone and a good guy is the sheriff. I'm friends with the local k-9 cops but if I encounter a cop I don't know I assume he's corrupt until he proves otherwise.

Do you have a different article than the one linked to? Because you're making some generous assumptions about a trained dog being ordered to attack, which aren't even really supported the police's comment in this story.

Considering even the police's statement was that the dog was "set lose" while they were knocking, AND there was no attack from either of the animals, I find it just as easy to believe that a lazy Bull Terrier that had been lounging around the house all day might have just been walking down the hallway to see what all the noise was.

"Pit Bulls" are almost (but not quite) as aggressive and murderous as black people so I can understand a cop being absolutely terrified seeing one, and trying to nervously quick-draw his gun to blast one sauntering up to him for a belly-rub. He shot himself in the foot in the process.

"[Translated from Dog] *yawn* Hey, company. Sup'? You mind scratchin' this---"
"10-91 Ghetto Pony Attack! Aaaaah- *BLAM* MY FOOT!"

Cops say things all the damn time to justify their actions when they do something wrong:
"Oh, we thought he had a gun..."
"Oh, he was being hostile towards us..."
"Oh, the unconscious diabetic man he was resisting arrest, that's why we had to taser him."

The cop shot himself in the damned foot. The only possible way to fark up a shot that much is if you're firing erratically, an accidental discharge, or if you're trying to fight off an animal latched onto your leg.

Since the animal didn't have a death-grip on his ankle, the cop is probably full of shiat and looking for a cover story for why his weapon went off.

The paperwork for hooking your finger around the trigger and accidentally firing a bullet into the floor (and through your foot) while trying to draw your weapon is long and embarrassing. And then you've got even more paperwork about the injury, and dealing with the insurance, and the health-care costs for a self-inflicted injury caused by doing something stupid...
And it all makes the department look bad.

It's easier to just make up a story justifying the weapon discharge that doesn't make your officer look like Barney Fife, especially when you can use it to blame any police injuries on someone or something else.

I'm guessing you also are servant to own a couch potato pit bull.

Awesome dogs! My first was a stray I rescued from the middle of a busy highway, my second -- and current -- was surrendered when her owners moved. Only complaint is that she's a bigger wimp than most Rotti's I know.....

NeauxFear: "Coming from a family of crooked cops, I'll be the first to question one's honesty. However, most of them are pretty good shots."

No, they're not. A homeowner using a firearm to defend his family and property is far less likely to injure an innocent person, than a cop. This is in some part due to the fact that a person protecting his home has a far better situational awareness, than a cop raiding a "lair," but it's also due to the fact that most cops are simply -- as you put it yourself -- crooked. Or, as I would put it -- a bunch of assholes, bullies, psychopaths, inferiority complex-ridden, megalomaniacs.

Guns do not hurt people, lack of training does.

Not lack of training. Lack of brains.

Does not take a whole lot of range hours to learn "When barrel is pointed at your own foot, do NOT pull trigger"

Yup, thank you. Of course, personally, I'm just glad that my post stood and wasn't deleted and I wasn't given a temporary ban on posting, for expressing such an opinion. Fark moderators call it "Trying To Create A Flame War." I believe cops have similar expressions -- inciting riots, and whatnot. It's sad to see what happens when people get a little power. Lord of the Flies, everywhere.

Other officers used a Taser to subdue the rogue cop and beat him with their clubs. After arresting the cop for shooting a cop (himself) they rushed him to a hospital and then off to jail.
