Nearly run over on a bike path? Then stop walking on it, dingus. You think this guy walks in the road and flips out when cars beep at him, too?

I hope he's got a looong line of small claims court visits to look forward to. Wheels and helmets are expensive, yo.

Seriously, guy. Stay on the sideWALK, and we'll stay on the bike paths and vehicular roadways.

I'd give you a dollar to suggest he dig some holes in the roadway.

thestr1ker: Flying over the handlebars of anything is the closest anyone is ever going to get to flying.

You can get a lot closer by jumping off of tall buildings. At least you build up enough speed for some aerodynamics.

I went over the handlebars one day when bike polo turned more into bike hockey, kick, replies, etc.

Not if the dream of the biker in question is to make it down the hill without incurring injury or damage to property.

Sounds like he needs a little facetime with sweet lady brick.

On a more serious note, when they built a bikepath in our town, they put drains where the trail went under roads, which is smart, however the drains were long slots that were paralel to the big wheel, I've seen many a biker and roller blader fall down because of this. For some reason the town did this too on the side of roads where there were no sidewalks.

Hey, then he's just giving them a good wakeup call. Not all dreams can come true you know, so they just have to keep trying or settle for their second best dream: picking out all that tree bark & trail dust that is now skingrafted into their epidermis.

I'd be pissed if I had to buy new wheels and/or a new helmet because some jerkoff decided to retaliate by digging a bunch of holes along a bike path.

Phil Woods hubs (and other parts) are expensive. If I somehow ended up ruining my wheels with Phil hubs, I'd hope I had the time to take someone to court (and win). Of course, my Phil hubs are going to end up outlasting my the bike(s) that I'm currently riding (Chris Chance-Yo Eddys)...but still, there's no excuse for being such a monumental douchebag.

What a jackass! If you don't want to risk being hit by a bike on a bike trail, don't walk on the farking trail. It's just that simple.

It would be fun to dig one of those holes until it's deep enough to bury him up to his neck. Then let all the riders who were flung over their handlebars by this asshat's action ride their bikes over his head a few times.

fanbladesaresharp 2008-01-06 04:48:02 AM
That's a lot of rage to dig holes so some mountain biker gets hung up in one. Nice jorb moron, they're mountain bikes for a reason. Even if it's a $6000 Koga-Miyata or a $100 huffy for a kid that just wants to ride with his Dad. You dug potholes because you were pissed. As if they were drifting in your neighborhood in their Fart Carts.

I could exact some rage on the trails with asshole horse riders and motocross riders, but hey, we all gotta get along.

I'm certainly not condoning the guy digging holes in the trail. That is just plain wrong.

But just to play devil's advocate here. Is it so hard for a biker to let somebody know they are coming by? The paths I ride my bike on are duel bike/hike. When I'm coming up behind a walker (or another biker moving slower), I let them know I'm behind them and going to pass them on the left so I don't scare the crap out of them.

Also, I have been on regulation sidewalks, not bikepaths, and been almost taken out by people on bikes.

(By the way, couldn't read the article, it's coming up a blank white page for me.)

soze: Seriously, guy. Stay on the sideWALK, and we'll stay on the bike paths and vehicular roadways.

Excellent idea, but for the retarded cyclists who insist on riding on the sidewalks. There is supposed to be a law in this city prohibiting riding on sidewalks if you are over 12 years old. I have never seen it enforced, but have seen a couple of serious injuries caused by hit and run by bike. I always ride in the bike lane in the street or bike path. I don't like near misses with old ladies on the sidewalk.

Stupid to try to injure someone but I can understand. Cyclists are usually the most obnoxious people out there. Our hike and bike trails in Austin are overrun with these wanna-be Lance chodes who nearly run you down if you're not fast enough getting out of their precious way.

And don't get me started on the ones who don't think the traffic signals apply to them...

I could say, drive a ginormously well armed bulldozer in some Idaho land because I was pissed, but I'm not that sort of pissed off at humanity. The fact that you DO have random thoughts is one thing. When you act on them is another. However, it's best not to try to "toe the line" and cross over it when it comes to getting pissed off at bicyclists.

The pedestrian/cyclist/motor pattern is a pet peeve of mine. Whichever. Whenever. As long as it's convenient. And dangerous.

At least a third of cyclists think stop signs don't apply to them and track standing on sidewalks looks cool.

Man accused of making bike trail holes

FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) -- Police said they arrested a man who acknowledged digging holes on a park bike trail as payback for nearly being run down by a cyclist.

Warren John Wilson, 52, faces a single felony count of vandalism, police Sgt. Linda King said Friday.

King said nearly 50 holes measuring about 1 foot by 2 feet have been found since June along a trail at Laguna Lake Park, and in some cases attempts had been made to hide them from cyclists. She said some riders went over their handlebars after hitting the holes, but none reported major injuries.

Detectives watching the trails questioned Wilson, who said he had nearly been run over by a mountain bike rider and began digging the holes in retaliation, King said.

Police said Wilson had been released from custody. A phone listing for him could not be found.

Bathia_Mapes , was taking it on faith from what other said in the thread that it was indeed a bike path. Still, I don't think it would be so hard to let somebody who was walking on it know you were coming by them on a bike. And again, I certainly don't condone the guy digging the holes.

Um, no I didn't. The paths in my immediate community are set up for both bike use and walkers use. That wasn't a freudian slip. I am, by the way on a bike when I'm on them. I tore my achilles tendons when I was in the army, and the only exercise the docs will let me do now is biking. I'm not even supposed to walk for exercise.

I got a white page too. Thanks to Bathia_Mapes for reprinting it.

The warning thing often depends on velocity, local weather conditions, and windedness. For instance, if I'm biking my 12k on the local bike/hike trail that goes along the highway, what with the sound of traffic, into the wind, and being somewhat winded myself with the exercise, attempting to signal a pedestrian as I whip past them at high velocity is an exercise in futility. Not to mention, if there's a pedestrian every two or three-hundred metres, I'm gonna be sick and tired of it awfully quick.

Obviously, I could slow down, but that would somewhat diminish the point of trying to get the ticker pumping and the lungs gasping. Not to mention, cut into my time spent doing other things.

dual = Characterized by having two (usually equivalent) components.

duel = A struggle between two contending persons or ideas.

So he digs almost 50 holes over the last 6 months and is only charged with one count of vandalism? Can I rob the same bank 50 times and still get charged only once?

He tried to hide some of the holes. That suggests he wanted to hurt some riders. That takes this to a whole different level.

Politics. The city might be held liable for the multiple incidents. It's not so bad if it only happened once officially.

You want faster moving vehicles to be more courteous and share the street, yet when a slower moving pedestrian is walking on the path, GTFO of the way.
Yes, digging holes is wrong, but the guy getting run over is wrong as well.

I like mountain biking too but there are some "hardcore" people who are total assholes about it. This isn't everyone but some particular dickhead mountain bikers have completely taken over hiking trails at my favorite nature preserve no matter who's on them. I've seen guys get tangled up in dog leashes and crash into people or fly off the trail when they come zooming out of control up behind hikers, birders, and other people who enjoy the trail at a more leisurely pace. These guys have a malignant disrespect for anything that is not on wheels, which is exactly why whenever I bring a very long walking stick with me and carry it sideways. If anyone wants to come zooming along, they are either going to slow down and go around me at a reasonable speed or get a walking stick in the throat.

Nick Nostril 2008-01-06 07:56:45 AM
I've had this sort of thing happen to me at a local woods/park. When I was much younger the park allowed mountain bikes on the trails along with the hikers. I was always courteous and would announce myself and pass slowly. I still got some nasty looks.

Then at one point I started noticing a LOT of trees/logs starting to show up laying across the trail. Turns out some of the walkers were dragging them out onto the trail.

In any event, they eventually shiatcanned allowing bikes on the trails.
