In this type of case, I don't think a settlement should have been an option. With the settlement they are allowed to say they did nothing wrong, nothing illegal. If I killed thousands of pets, you can bet I wouldn't be allowed to buy my way out of it.

I suspect this whole tainted pet food thing will trouble me forever.

I had three dogs die, each within about a week of one another, during the height of the recall frenzy...

Two were old (one very old,) and one fairly young... and they exhibited symptoms consistent with the poisonings.

Their food was NEVER on any of the recall lists to this day... but I'll always wonder.

Companies should be able to sell whatever they want on their food products. If enough people buy the food product and realize the dangerous consequences, then they will stop buying it and move on to something safer. Let the free market correct itself, not the government who allow lawyers to profit off those who actually suffered. The fact that this product was on the shelf shows the uselessness of the FDA who do nothing but take our tax dollars and put it in the hands of their corporate butt buddies.

What is special about 2005?

Nov 2007 Chinese Treasury Securities were $388b (down from a recent peak in Mar 2007 of $421b).

US National Debt was around $9.199b yesterday. So that is 1 trillion extra gone in two years if your figure was accurate.

Iraq?

China primarily holds a lot of commercial debt. That trade deficit has to be paid somehow. Recently, Chinese banks have even taken to simply buying up chunks of Western banks, in stead of just the debts.

Macular Degenerate 2008-01-06 09:05:14 AM
The problem is, the company probably made 10 or 100 times more than the fine in profits by outsourcing, cutting quality, reducing the cost of inspections, and skirting or downright breaking the law. In this way, $3.1 million is just the cost of doing business, and it will all be paid for by insurance anyway. So their insurance rates go up a bit, big deal. They are just going to build into the cost of the pet food anyway, and this means pet owners are financing the cost of the fine and the lawyer's fees, one bag at a time. And don't kid your self into thinking that they will implement any additional oversight. It's a win-win for the pet food company and a lose-lose for consumers.

Gotta love rigged systems.
